January | 2008 | Why Dont You Blog? | Page 2
A University professor has made a successful bid for media coverage of a standard lecture by insulting Google. Google is “white bread for the mind”, according to Tara Brabazon, Professor of Media Studies at the University of Brighton, arguing that teachers should equip students with skills to process Internet information.
(She teaches Media Studies. Isn’t that supposed to be HER job?)
She believes that easy access to information has dulled students’ sense of curiosity and is stifling debate. She claims that many undergraduates arrive at university unable to discriminate between anecdotal and unsubstantiated material posted on the internet. ……
We can no longer assume that students arrive at university, knowing what to read and knowing what standards are required of the material that they do read.”
“knowing what to read?” Well what should you read? What your teachers have told you?
Whole chunks of all education operate through teachers implicitly saying “Learn these facts. Because I say so.” Few teachers reward a challenging response from their students. “Challenging” has even become a euphemism for “irritating, dangerous, pain in the arse” in teacher- and social worker-speak.
The Internet opens up access to new potential information sources. Lots of teachers don’t like this precisely because their models of how to evaluate information are derived from accepting what they read in textbooks.
It’s not Google that panics University teachers. Anyone who can get any relevant information out of Google nowadays is probably already the best in their classes. It’s really Wikipedia. that annoys Universities Oh yes, here it is, in the Prof’s speech.
“Students live in an age of information, but what they lack is correct information. They turn to Wikipedia unquestioningly for information. Why wouldn’t they – it’s there,” she said.
Yes, indeed why wouldn’t they? It’s more factually correct than standard encyclopedias. It’s totally accessible. That’s what disturbs some teachers. (Including, I assume the Prof, unless she really is serious about teaching critical thinking….. In which case, Go Prof! Go Prof! etc)
Many are training their students for an imaginary academic career, as it would have been thirty years ago. They feel that students are workshy unless they put in the physical effort to search in libraries, pay large sums for course books and compete with other students for access to obscure library journals. Are these activities assumed to be “educational” by their very nature, just because the lecturers had to do them when they were students? Now, we have instant access to material from all over the world. Finding it quickly, judging its value and how it relates to other bits of information are the skills we need now.
Shouldn’t teachers reward students more for showing “thinking and questioning” skills than for proving they’ve read the text books and memorised a set of “facts”?
Accepted and memorised knowledge is crucial in some topics at some levels. (You can’t come up with alternate versions of the laws of thermodynamics or invent your own French word for ‘pen’) It is completely misguided in other subjects.
Inability to evaluate information isn’t just a problem for University students or for Internet sources. We are all pretty bad at it.
School students need to be specifically encouraged to dispute the sources and content of information, including the books they have been told to read. Training people to accept authority without questioning it encourages people to accept the words of ministers, priests, imams, kool-aid distributors, politicians, press, television, Fox news, gossip magazines, Answers in Genesis, Holy Books x,y & z, psychic detectives, fake nutritionists, fake childcare experts, wifi-cure salespeople and a bazillion other sources of bullcrap.
Christians can’t help themselves. They really can’t. In a world where science is progressing day in and day out, they are stuck with the other bronze age religions, languishing in a pit that their invisible friend will never left them out of. It is easy to see why, then, that Christians are happy to tolerate all other forms of religion (no matter how at odds with their own one-true-god they may be) but save the real damnation for Atheists.
Writing in the Times yesterday, the Rev Dr Peter Mullen (“Chaplain to the Stock Exchange” ffs) opened up with an attack on atheism that is so old and worn it is shocking anyone still tries it. It is shocking to people who are capable of learning, so it is actually less shocking that the theists demonstrate the complete inability to develop their thoughts…
Reading the article, I honestly think Dr Mullen lives in some bizarro world where he is scared the evil Atheists will climb into his bedroom and torture him for being a man of God (*). He begins his scare piece with drivel:
Far worse than the threat from international terrorism is the aggressive process of secularisation that has gripped our country, and most of Europe, and which is becoming ever more frenzied.
Erm, no. Appeal to fear noted and from there it just becomes nonsense and lies. Remember, lies make baby Jesus cry… This is actually the most sense you get from the madman so I can only assume the Times gave him space to rouse the rabble into responding. Well done The Times.
For example, I guess not many people are aware that it is against the law for state schools to teach the Christian faith as true. Teachers are allowed only to teach about religions. This is atheism by decree, for the only perspective from which one can teach about all religions is the secular perspective.
Wow. It really does make your eyes water as you try to follow this logic. But, Dr Mullen has made his point. I am offended that State Schools can not teach the truth of Odin, Thor, the Bifrost Bridge and Ragnarok. How dare they not teach the traditional religion of this nation…
“Atheism by decree” – what nonsense. I am amazed that clerics and theologians feel their belief is so fragile that unless children are completely, and continually, brainwashed they will stray to the Evil Atheism. Just goes to show that deep down they are all aware their crap is just crap and given time to think even children will realise this.
From this bad start, Dr Mullen goes on to talk about homosexuality and abortion with equal measures of idiocy and nonsense. There is nothing new, just the shameful regurgitation of old nonsense, vitriol, hatred and scare-mongering. The latter is something which appears to be a theme in Dr Mullen’s whole article. Basically he is trying to frighten people into the church. What a kind and nice deity these Christians worship.
Last point, as well as being the Stock Exchange’s chaplain, Dr Mullen is also the Rector of the Parish Church of St Michaels, Cornhill. If you thought his writing seems to be odd for a UK Anglican and felt more American Baptist, a clue may be in the Church’s webpage: (emphasis mine)
We are traditional Church of England – real Anglicans. We use the Authorised (King James) version of the Bible (1611) and the Book of Common Prayer (1662).
Hmm. Makes you wonder…

(*) Interesting: given that Jesus sacrificed himself for others, isn’t it strange how many Christians are happy to sacrifice others for themselves…
Quite regularly, well-meaning friends of mine will “pass on” an email that claims to be trying to get people “British again” or some similar bit of nonsense. Normally these are along the lines of a heroic soldier, suffering for God and country and I am sure most people have had exposure to them in some shape or form. This is doubly ironic because, 9.9999 times out of 10, these emails are actually written by and for Americans (clue is often in the spelling or claims the country was founded on Christian principles) and they are invariably tipped towards a religious argument. These supposed friends of mine are more than slightly aware of my position on both the Americanisation of the UK and religious beliefs. Still they send the emails…
Anyway, today I got one which bucked the trend slightly. It weirdly manages to hide the merest kernels of truth in a whole package of myths, but then I suppose that is the goal. I assume that who ever went to the trouble to make up these bits of nonsense are trying to stir jingoistic pride in something which never existed.
The most recent of these is weird because it isn’t about the UK or the US as such. This time Australia is the source of cultural wisdom. Titled “Britain Needs A Leader Like This!,” the email goes on to explain why “Prime Minister John Howard – Australia” is a great national leader. As you can imagine, it is crying out for a point by point dissection…
Muslims who want to live under Islamic Sharia law were told on Wednesday to get out of Australia , as the government targeted radicals in a bid to head off potential terror attacks.
Separately, Howard angered some Australian Muslims on Wednesday by saying he supported spy agencies monitoring the nation’s mosques. Quote: ‘IMMIGRANTS, NOT AUSTRALIANS, MUST ADAPT. Take It Or Leave It. I am tired of this nation worrying about whether we are offending some individual or their culture.. Since the terrorist attacks on Bali , we have experienced a surge in patriotism by the majority of Australians.’
Ok, while not a real quote it hints at a line taken by John Howard. Oddly this pretty much dates the message to February 2006, so we get the first hint that this is just nonsense that has been running round the internet like a ghost in the machine.
‘This culture has been developed over two centuries of struggles, trials and victories by millions of men and women who have sought freedom
Wowser. This is good. Again, I can find no evidence it was actually stated by John Howard, so I now suspect this is the opening line from the emails actual author.
It is nice how this glosses over how the Australians “sought” freedom – I am sure the aboriginal tribes will have a different concept of “victories” and certainly a different idea of what freedom means.
‘We speak mainly ENGLISH, not Spanish, Lebanese, Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, Russian, or any other language. Therefore, if you wish to become part of our society . Learn the language!’
Again, this seems to be more an American worry than an Australian one. I never realised Spanish and Lebanese were significant languages down under. Even if it is genuine Australian it has two big flaws that are often overlooked by bigots.
First off, “mainly” is an important qualifier. Yes, English may be the language spoken more than any one other language but how does that reflect on the sum totals of other languages? Why, in such a vitriolic hate filled speech would you put a weasel word like “mainly” in? Secondly, but more importantly, what to the actual natives of the island of Australia think about this? What about their language and culture? Oh yeah, they don’t count because this Australia is one nation under God…
‘Most Australians believe in God. This is not some Christian, right wing, political push, but a fact, because Christian men and women, on Christian principles, founded this nation, and this is clearly documented. It is certainly appropriate to display it on the walls of our schools. If God offends you, then I suggest you consider another part of the world as your new home, because God is part of our culture.’
Even more crap with a side order of bad history. Australia was not founded on Christian principles. The founding of Australia is clearly documented. The real history of Australia admits no “founders” to speak of and is a fascinating bit of reading. It really is. Spoiling it with this revisionist nonsense is a shame and a lie. And we all know that not only is lying for Jesus a sin, but lies make baby Jesus cry. So Hermes only knows why the obvious Christian who wrote this nonsense felt the need to lie so much.
‘We will accept your beliefs, and will not question why. All we ask is that you accept ours, and live in harmony and peaceful enjoyment with us.’
Hmm. “We will accept your beliefs” as long as they are the same as ours is what the email is basically saying.
‘This is OUR COUNTRY, OUR LAND, and OUR LIFESTYLE, and we will allow you every opportunity to enjoy all this. But once you are done complaining, whining, and griping about Our Flag, Our Pledge, Our Christian beliefs, or Our Way of Life, I highly encourage you take advantage of one other great Australian freedom,
“THE RIGHT TO LEAVE”.’
Well, this is looking very un-Australian. “Our Flag” and “Our Pledge” scream out American to me, but I might be wrong. Now, if only we could get the aboriginal natives to apply this with precedence as being the real inhabitants of the country. If we assume for one second that this really is a true Australian view point, it becomes interesting how nations which came to be by systematically exterminating the local inhabitants are the most vocal when it comes to claiming rightful ownership of their land. Is it because they are scared others will do unto them as they did to others?
‘If you aren’t happy here then LEAVE. We didn’t force you to come here. You asked to be here. So accept the country YOU accepted.’
More irony about prison colonies…
Maybe if we circulate this amongst ourselves, British citizens will find the backbone to start speaking and voicing the same truths.
Here we go. Does a collection of badly written lies and myths give people backbone? When the original author speaks of “British Citizens” does s/he just mean the white ones? What about the vast diversity of cultures who have CITIZENSHIP in the UK? Don’t they count any more?
If you agree please SEND THIS ON
I don’t so I didn’t send it on. If who ever emailed this to me is reading this – “you are an idiot – learn to spot nonsense.” If you are reading this and you have forwarded this message (or any of the similar bits of crap) on, then you are also an idiot – please stop.
P.S I think this also goes for us when going to other countries as well!
The Pope is setting up crack exorcism squads to deal with the growing problem of demonic possession, ac Ruth Gledhill. He wants every parish to have its own exorcism expert. Maybe they can combine the job with the other newly-created role of person who prays to rid the church of paedophiles otherwise the Catholic Church’s parish wages bill may go through the roof.
Some priests have long been quite keen to take the Pope’s advice and follow Bill Murray’s example, according to the Independent in 2000.
We’ve never been busier, says official church exorcist
The Inquisition was just a warm-up then?
Apparently, the Chief Exorcist blamed New Age crackpottery for the rise in demonic possession caes. I assume the exorcism rites are based on traditional “Set a thief to catch a thief” principle, so I will forbear from mentioning the equally traditional pots and kettles.
Let’s hope that the Christian churches draw back before following the example of Matthew Arnold, self appointed Witchfinder General. A recent Discovery channel TV programme (well I saw it recently) discussed some of the marvels of witch-finding that he achieved. He got very wealthy, very quickly, as a result of being so good at detecting people in league withe devil.
Torture was illegal, so Hopkins and his colleagues used other methods to encourage their suspects to confess. They were made to sit on a stool for 24 hours or more with no sleep, while ‘watchers’ observed in case their ‘imps’ appeared. With serious sleep deprivation is it any wonder that women confessed to consorting with the devil? Ducking was another favourite way of testing a witch. If she drowned she was innocent, if she lived she was guilty and then hanged.
Hmm, some modern governments are really quite attentive students of history then.
Please Note: if you came here searching for the tedious Endemol programme Big Brother which ruins the UK television Channel 4’s listings, I am sorry but you have come to the wrong place. This is a long rant about history and how people have ignored it.
Right, disclaimer out of the way. It is an almost unarguable fact that George Orwell was actually the one true prophet. Writing decades ago, he seems to have accurately predicted how the western world would change – his only mistake was getting the date slightly wrong.
If 1984 had been called 2020 then I am afraid people would have had to start worshipping him as a god.
Back in the wonderful days of 1984 people were innocent of the true levels of surveillance which their “democratically” elected governments would place them under. People were innocent of the mind-numbing doublespeak that politicians would use almost daily to spin everything they said to the point at which it implies everything, promises nothing and can never be used to tie the speaker down to actually having said anything.
Even though I immensely disliked Margaret Thatcher (for example), at least when she spoke she said something. The fact I disagreed with it is irrelevant – at least there was something to disagree with. At the same time, the Labour Party under Neil Kinnock might have been pursuing an un-electable party line but at least they had a policy and stuck to it.
Fast forward twenty years and things have massively changed. I am not enough of a doom-sayer to say we are living in the world of 1984, but it seems this is the path on which we in the west are heading. Oddly, it also seems people are aware of this but reluctant to do anything to change it. This really surprises me.
For me, one of the early signs of the “Future” came in the early 1990’s. I am not completely naive and I don’t think that the history of politics is full of honourable people, however by and large political parties had a “manifesto” and campaigned on that basis. Until the 1970’s this seems to have worked well – as society shifted in different directions, different political parties were elected. Then came the Thatcher years and things started to change. Coming to power in 1979, Thatcher changed the political landscape in the UK massively and forced the Labour party into the wilderness of opposition for 18 years. People who voted for the first time in the 1997 General Election had never known a government other than the Conservative party.
During this time the Labour party tried to hold on to its core values, and as a result remained un-electable. During the eighties people in the UK didn’t want to be told to tighten their belts, they wanted to splash out on all the new wonders of modern life. After several election defeats (sometimes quite significant defeats – even the inept, uncharismatic, non-entity John Major defeated them), the Labour party felt the need to change.
With the invention of New Labour, the Labour party largely plagiarised the Thatcher doctrine with a few socialist-amendments to placate the old guard. As a result, they had a landslide victory in 1997, gaining the most seats they have ever held. 1997 was the death-knell for traditional politics within the UK, from this point on political parties discarded the quaint old concept of “party policies” and relied on an ever shifting set of soundbites they hoped would gain favour with the electorate. From the 2001 General Election onwards, the conservative party largely did away with the concept of having any policies and resorted to little more than personal attacks on various members of the Labour party. Even now, the Conservative party changes its policies as often as they change their underwear – they will make a statement, gauge public reaction and if it is negative they morph the policy.
Watching politicians of all stripes is almost painful now. None of them, even the previously straight talking Prime Minister, allow themselves to be tied down to actually saying anything which can’t be adjusted if the polls suggest the public didn’t like it. As a result we have a socialist Conservative party and a capitalist Labour party. No wonder the electorate don’t bother voting – they get more impact from a 10 second interview with a newscaster than they will ever get at the ballot box.
Into this crazy political landscape of doublespeak we have the Big Brother governmental surveillance which has reached levels George Orwell would be surprised by. Despite weathering 30-odd years of Irish terrorist attacks on the mainland (including a mortar attack on 10 Downing Street), it seems the threat of Islamic inspired terrorism is something new for us in the UK. In response to this threat, we have ramped up an already monumental surveillance state until it is now considered on a par with China and Russia (EPIC and Privacy International Findings). In the UK we have recently been massively exposed to how inept government organisations generally are when it comes to protecting data, yet at the same time we are indifferent to government plans to collect and store more and more data. Police have an amazing array of “stop and search” powers that largely ignore any individual right to privacy or the assumption of innocence. Legislation has passed to allow the government to intern (*) detain a person for 42 days without any need to prove guilt – the simple suspicion of being involved in terrorism or even just associated with terrorists is enough. Safeguards (albeit minimal) currently exist, however it is easy to see how this could quickly become a law making it illegal to be “Arabic-looking” in a public place. Even as an atheist, the demonisation of one individual religious / cultural group is worrying (first they came).
Most worrying of all, is that over the years people have become more and more complacent about such abuses of power. We are not yet in the world Orwell described in 1984 (and to a lesser extent, the other books) but it seems that we are democratically marching down the road to it. With a few more terrorist threats (already it takes longer to get on a plane than it does to actually get to your destination for all internal UK flights), a few more (false) headline news items about soaring crime rates and things may change. Will we see a time when DNA is collected at birth, ID is checked whenever people move from city to city, your car is tracked by government controlled satellites or worse? Sadly it seems most of this has already been suggested in all seriousness.
In the year 2020, will people look back on today as a time of needless worry, or halcyon days of freedom and liberty? Will our ancestors who gave their lives for our freedom be pleased with what we have done with it, or turn in their graves?
Note: I know next to nothing about US politics and would be interested to hear how it compares to the madness we have in the UK.

(*) See more at BBC On This Day and CAIN. It is generally accepted that this was a policy which did more harm than good.
The UK population spent £8 million pounds on chocolate fountains, last year.
You didn’t misread that. The Guardian says so, anyway, on the basis of a report by GfK Marketing Services (Guardian G2 print, page 10. Cant be bothered to look online for a reference sorry. You’ll have to take my word for it. It is obviously deeply spurious, but for the purposes of a rant, I am going to treat it as if it were fact.)
Could a kitchen gadget scream “pre-revolutionary French aristocracy” more loudly than that?
Rephrasing an old quotation (that I am too idle to reference right now) “A kitchen chocolate fountain is the universe’s way of telling you that you have WAY WAY too much money.”
Plus I would add “And if you have bought one, please cull yourself now, for the good of the species’ gene pool ……”
The Internet is obviously trying to become art rather than a sentient being (pace Kurzweil). It has taken to subverting preconceived notions of what it is. Mainly, so far it is just managing to refuse to be what you expect it to (like Firestats disintegration on this blog, the ongoing refusal of the Atheist Blogroll to notice more than 1 in 5 posts, Technorati’s deciding that links from the blogroll don’t provide authority – all topics already done to death here.)
But today, I noticed WordPress has started redefining what it puts in its list of “recent blog posts that link here” and listing posts that don’t link here. But are worth linking to. (And should have been read before, my bad.). Go figure….
Archeoastronomy has a really good post on Post-modernist Scepticism, sparked by another post – Happy Jihad on postmodernist “thought.” HJHop believes the humanities can be rescued from postmodernist bull. I would hope this is possible.
Has anyone ever tried to read Baudrillard ffs? Your head spins as you try to reconcile the fact that words from the dictionary are joined together using familiar syntax with the equally obvious fact that you can’t extract any meaning from the sentences.
The opposite side of the cultural studies coin is Umberto Eco, who has written brilliant deconstructions of things like wrestling as well as a novel that managed to be accessible at the same time as deeply thought-provoking on a dozen levels. (Name of The Rose.)
I think I am trying to say that I don’t know what post-modernism is in the humanities. As Alun pointed out, it’s a concept that only works in the visual arts, where modernism is a recognisable style. And even in the visual arts, it’s not exactly easy to identify, as the sort of pastiche we associate with post-modernism can just as validly be seen as a recent variant of modernism.
And it really does fall to bits in the humanities, if, as Alun suggests, it’s largely a matter of dumping the Enlightenment project and seeing pretty well nigh everything as culturally valid.
I suppose we can blame the cheese-eating surrender-monkeys for a lot of the postmodernist crap. (Sorry to any pragmatic French people. Just joking) Claude Levi-Strauss produced some beautiful social anthropology (with a few glaring misunderstandings) but his attempts at deconstruction turned out to be too seductive a model for a lot of French writers.
English speakers tend to expect not to understand French thought but to admire its intellectualism, to the point of assuming that it must be superior to our own earthbound efforts (Think Sartre compared to Bertrand Russell, as mid-20th century philosophers.) When you see the dog’s breakfast that some English-speaking writers can make when they stray into the realm of cultural interpretation, you can indeed see why.
In case you are wondering what the point of this post is (as am I) I think it’s to suggest that you read the Archaeoastronomy and HJHop posts. Plus, I am putting forward Umberto Eco as (sometimes) a model of what a sceptical and non-shallow humanities sensibility might look like. (With a nod to Levi-Strauss and a hat-tip to some British cultural studies writers – Stuart Hall, Mary Douglas, for instance) And the Wire, of course. Always the Wire.
People enjoy wine more if they believe it costs more, according to a California Institute of Technology experiment that was widely reported today. The BBC put this politely as having shown that people enjoyed the supposedly more expensive wine more.
This wasn’t just due to people pretending to have a more sophisticated palate, either, as it was observed on brain scans that “pleasure centres” in the brain were more activated.
If the pop science reports are right, this was a very elegant experiment, so simple and easy to repeat, but suggesting so many wider avenues for investigation beyond the taste of wines..
It’s an illuminating reminder that so many of our pleasures are experienced only because of the value that others put on things. There is no simple nature-culture divide. We perceive what other people have allowed us to perceive. We value things that we are led to see as valuable – obviously making us suckers for advertising, as well as eager consumers of a whole range of cultural fables and moral values. Social values are somehow integrated into our biology.
Libby Purvis pointed out in the Times religion blog that baptising kids to get into a specific school isn’t the irrelevant ritual that many parents imagine it to be.
OK, obviously it is an irrelevant ritual. But it’s a big deal to the Catholic Church. The Vatican page that Libby Purvis linked to is a mite chilling. It makes a lot of contradictory claims. The unbaptised have to go straight to hell without collecting their free pass. Except, if they are really small, Jesus will probably feel sorry for them….
Otherwise, the unbaptised can basically only go straight to heaven if they die doing some noble Christian work. This is called the “Baptism of Blood.” It sounds so much like a Goth band that I want to learn to play the guitar right now, just so that I can put the name on a street poster, in dripping red letters on black…..
I am getting a strong whiff of the abbattoir in “god’s purpose” for humanity, the thing that religious folk keep banging on about. Fresh meat seems to be the answer. You can’t have baptism removed. It’s like a cattle-brand n your soul.
Some soul eater needs to know if you count in heaven as the spiritual equivalent of “halal” or “kosher”. What with the Baptism of Blood image, as well. And believers being the Churches “flock.” Didn’t Jesus claim to be a Fisher of men? These are pretty blatant admissions of an agricultural purpose for humanity, methinks.
The National Secular Society produces a de-baptism certificate that you can download. It appears that you can get declared not a Catholic but you can’t undo the historical fact of having been baptised. The Church of England (Episcopalian?) is also unwilling to strike names from its register of baptisms, on the evidence of a letter from Chris Taylor.
I emailed the diocese where I was dunked many years ago asking if I could be struck from the record as I have always thought it to be a load of old rubbish and said that if my parents had given me the choice of going through some sort of black magic voodoo ceremony performed by a probable child abuser in a dress I would, even at the age of 6 months, have said thanks but no thanks. I received a reply telling me that there was nothing that I could do about it.
Well, if your destiny is being earmarked for some spiritual being’s special dinner on 6th November 2058, once you are on the menu, you’ve had it…
Which is worse – a hypocritical “faith” or a sincere but demented one? The world is obviously more at risk from the real millenarian rapture-ready Christians and devout jihadists. So hypocrisy must be less dangerous to humanity.
All the same, I can’t resist a cynical shudder at the story, on BBC television and in the press, e.g. the UK Daily Mail, that parents are baptising more and more kids to get them into “good” Catholic schools.
Parents hoping to ensure places in oversubscribed Catholic schools are behind a surge in “late” baptisms into the Church in England and Wales, it was claimed today.
Baptisms of children aged between one and 13 years old made up 5.4 per cent of total entry into the church in 1958 but this figure had risen to nearly a third, or 30.3 per cent, in 2005, according to a report by an independent research body. (from the Daily Mail)
Children are being baptised several years after birth to boost chances of getting into Roman Catholic schools, research has suggested
This shows both parents and the RC Church to be deeply cynical. Much more cynical than the sceptical atheists who hold to naive humanist values about telling the truth….
These parents miraculously regained their faith at the exact same time that they were looking for a local school for their offspring? Are they happy for their kids to grow up learning by example that hypocrisy is GOOD, if it gets you what you want.
(This may be turn out to be a bit of a Faustian deal for some parents. Exposing your kids to being taught by an organisation that has long been riddled with paedophiles seems like a pretty stupid choice to me.)
The Catholic Church is quite happy with face value adherence. It can buy any number of nominal believers with schools that produce reasonably good GCSE results and have a lower level of shootings and stabbings.
D’oh. Sorry, a bit of an error there. As it happens the Church doesn’t have to buy the believers by funding its schools with its own money. It gets its school funding from the state…..
As it turns out, the state is the organisation that is swelling the ranks of nominal Catholics by mysteriously continuing to choose to fund religiously based schools. Does the state want to bring about loads of Catholic conversions?
Someone explain to me again why this is a reasonable spend of public money.
It is wonderful, isn’t it. I go offline for a few days and the wonderfully strange concoction of people who make up our fair planet feel safe to come and comment here. Amazing.
Just over a week ago, I wrote a post looking at the insanity alternate world view that makes up a Bravenet board called “Rapture in the Air.” This seems to have resulted in a massive amount (for this blog anyway) of responses – oddly aimed at the related Shelly Corbitt post – including ones from the supposed founder of Rapture in the Air. They are almost as funny as the board. However, the pinnacle (for me anyway) of unintentional humour came in the form of a comment from Rita Cosby. I liked this so much, I felt the need to fisk it in full in a new post. Here goes…
WOW….
Thank you. We aim to impress.
you guys really are prejudice toward Christians.
Well, actually no. We aren’t even prejudiced against Christians. Generally speaking we are happy to challenge any line of nonsense, whatever its source. There is, of course, a larger amount of posts here looking at the illogical nonsense Christians throw about like chaff. The reason for this is not that we hate Christians more than any other fantasy religion, but we live in a Christian nation. The madness of Christianity actually has a direct impact on our day to day lives. It is basically, shoved down our throats on a regular basis so of course, it is going to get the most attention here. We have tried to include all religions though, and if you were actually bothered to spend more than a second looking you would see this. However, I suspect you have simply come here with this idea because some one in your religious group told you it was true, and you are conditioned not to question…
What if you find out in the near future that what your read at this site [assumed to mean RITA] is true, do you realize that by then it will be to late to repent and all of you will have to go through the tribulation.
An interesting variation on Pascals Wager. Interesting yet equally flawed. I do not for one second doubt that there is the possibility that the erm, future described on Rapture in the Air might come true. However, this possibility has to be weighed up against the possibility that the world will end in Ragnarok. What if you find out in the “near future” that the Giants have attacked Asgard and it is too late for you to take your place by Odin’s side in the final battle?
The future you anticipate is but one of an infinite number of possibilities. The chances of it happening are basically 1 divided by infinity. I am more likely to repeatedly win the lottery every week from now until the day I die.
Now, I am sure that the good fundies can simply refute any other end of times myth on the basis that the Bible tells them their one is true. However, this is poor reasoning. Even without having to worry about the Bible’s accuracy, the fact remains that “rapture” obsessed Christians are a minority of your own religion – most Christians do not believe in this nonsense, so it can’t really be viewed as doctrinally sound.
Of course, you will still have one more opportunity to give your life to Christ, if of course you live through the chaos and destruction that will take place during the 7 years of tribulation.
Phew. I was worried things would get bad. If you die in the tribulation what happens? If you die before the rapture what happens? What has happened to the countless millions of people who were born and died before the “Born again” cult took off?
I just thought I would give you a heads up folks, you can either take or leave my advice,
I’ll leave it, but thanks anyway.
but ignoring Jesus and His free gift of salvation you are in for eternal life separated from God in a place call hell………..
Where is this “place call hell?” Can you point to it on a map?
this will not be a very nice place to be, especially for all eternity.
Yeah, this brings me to another point of interest. You claim to worship a loving, caring deity who has, basically, pushed the forgiveness idea quite strongly. There is a two thousand year tradition of your deity granting all humanity with free will and the right to choose their own actions. The New Testament is a tribute to forgiving those who wrong you, being kind to all humanity (etc). From a purely moral point of view, the NT is fairly good.
Then you present this evil, nasty spiteful deity who is not content with a bit of smiting those who have the temerity to offend his divine majesty but will condemn them to an ETERNITY of torment. Wow. That is amazing.
Shall we look at this in the manner of an analogy? I think so.
Imagine, a conversation between a man and his wife. The husband tells his wife he loves her and she means the world to him. One day, the wife goes shopping and forgets to buy the husband’s newspaper.
In the REAL WORLD, the husband – even if he is a bit upset – would be expected to say “Ok, I still love you.” If he punched her for this, he would (rightly) be open for some jail time. If he beat her repeatedly he would be (again rightly) be spending a lot of time in jail. If he killed her, well in some places he would be on death row.
Now, in the land of your deity, a similar infraction will result in not just a black eye or broken ribs but ETERNITY in hell.
Where is the love there? The loving, all good God is actually a monstrous dictator who commits acts so vile they would shock the world if a human did it. He is the ultimate terrorist.
Do you really not see the logical flaw in saying to people “You have free will to do whatever you choose, but if you do not do exactly what I tell you, you will be punished worse then you can ever imagine“? I think we can all agree that dictatorships are a BADTHING™. If God was called Saddam Hussein, America would have bombed heaven to the dark ages.
Think about it.
It may surprise you (but it shouldn’t) but I have thought about it. Have you really thought about it?
I was well ready for a good bit of comical idiocy, after a dull workday (in which the PC clock seemed to prove that the time was passing so slowly as to have gone into reverse.)
A new comment on TW’s post Who’s lying – Corbett or God? seemed promising. It was full of threats to pray for us and claimed to be from
The founder of your much hated RITA
Duh? Do I even know a Rita? Surely I’d remember that I did if I really hated them? I click the url that comes with the comment.ink. No such website. Google RITA, nothing remotely rapture-related on page 1.
Bah. Have to read comment carefully to spot that RITA means “rapture in the air”. Put the full phrase in and to find mention of RITA.
One linkin the Google page is to the Prophecy student blog. I’m not sure if this is by the poster or just a link to admired text from another site, but it says
“IN FOUR WEEKS YOU’LL BE WITH ME IN HEAVEN”
Four weeks from when?
Monday, September 10, 2007
Have I died and gone to heaven, then? Blimey. It’s just like the crappy old earth was.
I found quotes from “Rapture in the Air” on Armageddon Online. However, these have got to have been put there by someone for a laugh, so I guess this doesn’t count. Otherwise pages of googling and no result.
HTF am I supposed to work up a decent level of hatred on this slim basis? I can’t even manage mild dislike yet.
Stop it now. You were doing so well with your legal system actually starting to work and your advisers starting to tell the truth, and then you just have to go and spoil it, don’t you? You are getting really scary. I really don’t want to be Raptured. Most of the people on this planet don’t. Maybe that’s just us.
These items were on the BBC today:
(Minor insanity) Huckabee saying that Gitmo is too luxurious. Hmm. I would hate to see the neighbourhood that you live in, Huckabee. Even round where I live, which is often seen as a bit rough, waterboarding is not yet considered an everyday occurrence.
Bizarrely, Huckabee (the name invites so many parodies that I’ll resist the challenge) said that the Gitmo prisoners were mollycoddled, considering their crimes. Well, the prisoners in Gitmo haven’t actually been convicted of crimes. They certainly haven’t been tried and found guilty of anything. Isn’t that the whole point of Gitmo? If there was any valid evidence against the prisoners under national and international law it would have been used to convict them. The US, being inconveniently hamstrung by national and international law, delierately stuck this abhorrence on a place that it can represent as beyond any normal constraints.
(Major insanity) American warships supposedly threatened by a suicide attack by Iranian speedboats? Argh. Argh. Arch. Must I keep saying “Argh” until more appropriate words come into my head? I know think that all <strike>non-Yanks</strike> Iranians are dumber than a box of Twinkies but, hey, c’mon, dudes. Surely, by the beard of Loki, the US voters aren’t going to swallow this bull excrement. Your faithful allies are never going to fall for the same trick twice.
Iran is a state that you claim (directly in the face of your own intel) is almost a nuclear power. You expect us to believe that it is ready to declares war on the most powerful country in the world by ramming warships with speedboats. (For a start, we all know the torpedo has been invented. )
This WMD stuff and imminent-attack-danger Pearl Harbour stuff doesn’t work anymore. The Iranian nuclear threat didn’t work. You characterised last year’s captured Brit sailors and marines as “spineless” for refusing to act in a mad gung-ho way that would have started a war with Iran. You don’t have a blank cheque that lets you draw on the support of your allies and the compliance of the UN for ever.
Get over it. Just accept that you have to pay more for your oil…
The Pope made an apparently unprecedented call on Catholics to pray for ever to get rid of paedophile priests.
Wow. That looks as if it will be about as effective as the Church’s previous efforts then….. Seeing as prayer is so useful to regrow limbs, for iinstance.
It appears that the praying will be a job. Every parish is supposed to appoint someone. What a wierd role that would be.
A very funny post about Treet (a Spam-alike product) on Happy Jihad’s House of Pancakes moved me to investigate the “food” product Spam.
Short of being 4 weeks into a global catastrophe that wiped out all other foodstocks except canned meat, the actual substance will never pass my lips. But the high-kitsch Spam site is fantastic. It seems to be online just to mock its own product. It even tells you about a Spam Museum. The look and feel is totally consistent: “John Walters collaborates with Disney.”
(I will definitely look more sympathetically at unwanted emails from now on. )
HJHOP’s canned meat extrusion product of choice doesn’t even try for retro art status. I couldn’t find a Treet website, let alone a minor kitsch masterpiece. I did find a Wikipedia entry.
While very popular, Treet does not have SPAM’s cult following.
How good is that? A cult following for something that compares unfavourably with the cheapest dog food.
Come on, Treet. Must try harder. If Spam can get there, what’s wrong with you? You started out on the wrong foot with a brand name that makes it look as if you were too lazy to proofread the copyright application. Your produce seems to be potted meat product for people too dumb to spell a short word. (I guess the Beatles got away with it, though.)
Look at Nice biscuits. They blatantly aren’t. They went down the same route as you, but they didn’t make that crucial spelling error. Learn from their example.
