Hiatus Time

Once more holidays come round, even here at WhyDontYou. The slavedriving blog machine gives us a short reprieve and allows us some time to recharge our batteries.

I am away on a family holiday starting tomorrow and by a serendipitous coincidence, Heather will be away on holiday from Saturday. Both of us will be away for about 2 weeks, so it is unlikely normal service will resume prior to 18 Nov 07.

Hopefully this time off will give us the chance to recharge our batteries, top up our tans and prepare ourselves to resume the onslaught against the idiocy, insanity and logical torture that is religion and superstition.

Please, feel free to keep leaving comments (it worked for Null, his last post was nothing more than a graph and it now has 27 comments…) and I will be happy to blog people to death when I get back.

Gun Crime, Family and Confusion

A while ago (2 Oct 07 to be precise), I wrote a post about how the weird idea people have that being armed is a “good thing” (for whatever reason) had led to the death of a young girl and the destruction of a family – she was killed by her brother, playing with his mother’s illegally owned revolver. (Post was titled “One Bullet Destroys Three Lives.”)

Today I have a comment from someone calling themselves Logic. Although I want to respond to the comment, I can’t really do it justice by simply responding with a comment, so I thought I would repost the comment and address it here. Here we go.

does any one know what a .38 revolver looks like,…. i do, and if you dont then a quick search on the net will show you pictures,

Its ok, I know what a .38 revolver looks like. You may be thinking they all look the same, but they don’t. There are similarities, however if you do not know what you are looking for it is easy to make mistakes.

OTs-38 silent revolver (Russia) Five-shot .38-calibre revolver

the POINT is ,,,.. Kasha Peniston (the brother) must of knew it was loaded as you can SEE the bullets, he should of got more then 2yrs he should of got 5years in time, no less,

You are assuming a few things here. First off, if it was a .38 special style revolver (the one on the right above), then yes it is possible to see the brass ends of the rounds in the cylinder. However, this assumes the person knows enough to look. If the brother was, as claimed, simply playing with this as a toy, then it is unlikely he thought enough to check the cylinder to see if there were bullets in place. Even trained people make mistakes about the state of a weapon, so it is a bit comical to assume a teenager will be thoughtful and thorough enough to carry out normal safety precautions.

Secondly, what difference would the extra 3 years on his sentence have made? I suspect you have picked a completely arbitrary sentence and decided that would be more suitable. His family is destroyed. 5 years or 50 years is not going to change that. If we accept the courts findings that this crime was not malicious, then what are you seeking to punish here?

Sad, and traumatic, that this event might be, the boy still basically had an accident while playing. Because his mother (for whatever reason) had a loaded weapon in the house, the accident didn’t result in something trivial like a cut arm but the death of his sister. Punishing the boy will not deter this from happening again. His life is already destroyed, so why add to the suffering?

he’ll do 1yr and get out on bing the idol inmate, (aka good boy) either way he will be out by age 19,

So what? Are you saying that rewarding inmates who show good behaviour with reduced sentences is a bad thing? What do you think the purpose of prison is? If, as I thought, Prison is there to rehabilitate offenders then rewarding good behaviour is the right thing to do.

Also, why do you have a problem with him getting out by the age of 19? Would you rather he spent longer in jail, became a hardened criminal and then spent what remains of his life damaging society?

and the sotry reads ….the mother went to london for the weekend etc etc, and told the Boy where the gun was,.. he inturn got the gun and MUST of knew it was loaded but still played around with it,

Again, so what? The case reporting never disputed that the boy was playing with the weapon. He admitted to shooting his sister. You are basing all this on the assumption the boy had looked to see if the weapon was loaded.

Now the mother is trying to pin it on the so called bad boy image boy friend,

Once more, this cries out “so what?” In the original post, I was pointing out the flaw in the idea that people being armed / carrying weapons at home made things safer. I highlighted this was a situation which had totally stemmed from the mothers insane idea that having a gun in the house was sensible.

I am, totally, at a loss as to the point you are trying to make here.

this blog is a load of sh!t,.. if your going to tell the story tell it how it is.,,.. not bits a bats,

Well, thanks for taking the time to comment when you have such a low opinion of the blog. What part of the story do you feel was missed out? The post you have commented on was not a “news report,” it was an analysis of how the tragedy had come about, especially in light of recent jingoistic claims by various politicians.

and if you block the comment,. atleast u know ur talkin crap

Great. I didn’t block it. As you can see, I rarely talk crap and this certainly wasn’t one of those times. In a similar vein of human charity, I will point out that I suspect you are simply doing a drive by trolling. If you don’t come back and elaborate, at least you know you are talking crap.

Dentention with out trial

It seems the law and order madness which is overwhelming our green and pleasant land knows no boundaries or limits. Previously, Heather has commented on the bare faced idiocy which masked it self as an opinion column in the Times and this is supplemented by the madness spouted by Lord Carlisle – from the now badly named “Liberal Democrat” party.

In a news item titled “Raise detention limit, urges peer” the BBC report :

There is a case for extending the 28-day limit on questioning suspected terrorists, the government’s terror legislation watchdog has said.

Lib Dem peer Lord Carlile of Berriew is due to report to the home secretary on whether the limit should be lengthened.

He told BBC One’s Politics Show he had concluded that in a “small number” of cases, “a 28-day period between arrest and detention may be insufficient”.

Amazing. If there is still anyone out there who thinks we are merely sleepwalking into a police state, please take note. We are jogging and building into a full blown run.

The whole issue of internment detention seems to be locked into an insane circle. It sickens me to my core that I find myself agreeing with the terminally irritating David Cameron on this, but at least his opinion is just weak and pathetic:

But Tory leader David Cameron said “no new evidence” supported an extension.

You see, he is right but he says it like a weasel.

This is not a good policy. The current legislation which allows you to detain an innocent person for 28 days before you even charge them with a crime is shocking. To use the “terrorist” bogeyman is an underhand tactic at best, the threat from terrorism, while real, is insignificant compared to the dangers we face daily. The threat from the lost civil liberty is immense.

It seems that Toutatis has guided this blog over the last few days and our posts are heading in a set direction (rather than the aimlessness which seemed to annoy Al Kafir Akbar). The right wing windbag Lord Rees-Mogg lamented the removal of the requirement of prima facie evidence before some one could be extradited for trial, saying how this was an important right. Over the weekend we saw how a man was detained, despite having an overwhelming amount of correct documentation, as an illegal immigrant (the offence of being black in a public place seems to have returned to haunt us) and today the posts about the madness of stop and search laws. Brazenly risking a slippery slope fallacy (its not a fallacy if the slope is slippery), it strikes me this is all symbolic of the same problem. We are willingly allowing the state to control and intrude into our lives so we can spend our time watching Big Brother (the irony is not missed here…), X Factor, programs were celebrity no-marks cut hair or cook food and so on.

People do not want their inane drivel about the latest celeb to go bonkers to be disturbed by having to worry about burglary, murder or terrorism – that would force them to think about their values and what is important to them. Much easier to just go with the flow…

It is not just the working, common man, who suffers this inability to think but even the “noble” peers who are supposed to have the interests on the nation at their hearts. Going back to Lord Carlisle’s confusing ideas:

Lord Carlile gave Kafeel Ahmed, who died of his injuries after an alleged terrorist attack on Glasgow Airport, as an example of why police might need more time to question a suspect before bringing charges.

The peer said: “Had he survived, it is possible that time for interviewing him would have run out before he regained consciousness.

I will be charitable and assume this made sense, Lord Carlisle is saying that had Kafeel Ahmed not died, but remained in a coma for more than 28 days the police would have been unable to question him. Things like that make sense on the first scan. Let us think about it though…

First off, there is enough evidence to charge him with the crime without questioning him. No need for extra time in detention. It was, broadly, and open and shut case. I can’t imagine he would have had a strong alibi placing him in Majorca at the time. So, why would they need more than 28 days?

Secondly, after 29 (or more) days in a coma what would be the point in questioning him? It could take months or years before he was able (let alone willing) to recount events. Are we saying that (as implied by Lord Carlisle) detention should be indefinite?

The BBC continues with:

He added that cases which involved complex forensic analysis, or where alleged terrorists had carefully encrypted computer files, might also require suspects to be detained beyond the present limit.

He said: “My concern is not about the number of days. The number of days is a political decision, there’s no logical answer as to how many days are ideal as a maximum.

I have two issues with this, I will deal with the one I think is less important first. It worries me that he has no basic problem with indefinite detention. There is no sensible way to say how long a police investigation will take if we look at it from the police point of view, which is why he ends up with no logical maximum. That makes sense and I agree. Where we differ is the conclusion that extends from this. There is no logical maximum from the police point of view, so a reasonable length needs to be stipulated from the innocent, yet accused, person’s point of view. If we, as we should, assume the person is innocent, how long would you be willing to spend in jail before the police said “ok, you were right after all” and let you go? 28 days is, actually, much too long. In the case of the gentleman detained 2 days, he was awarded £7500 compensation. How about a scheme where the police have to compensate the person £3500 per day they are detained if they are later found to be innocent of terrorist related offences? Makes sense to me.

That leads me to the bigger issue I have a problem with. What is special about terrorism? Any one born in England after 1969 has lived their entire life under the threat of terrorism on the mainland. As a child I remember the annual round of bombings in Manchester and London, I remember regular train evacuations and almost daily bomb scares in schools and shopping centres. In the very early days of the “troubles,” detention without trial was tried but all the research agrees that this had the sole effect of turning PIRA/INLA from a small-time, thug, organisation into large, popular groups with masses of local support. Is this really what we want to have happen on the mainland? Internment (sorry, detention without trial) has never proven to be successful at combating terrorism. It makes heroes and martyrs of those arrested, and it turns every person who is wrongly arrested against the state which is supposed to protect them. It can not, ever, be a good thing.

As I see it (this is a blog remember, it is just my opinion), this hinges on the basic thing we seem to have lost. We, as a nation, no longer presume innocence. We imply it is OK for the police to detain people under Prevention of Terrorism laws because, basically, we assume they are actually guilty. When some one is released, it is made to look like a criminal is allowed to get off because the system protected them not the victim. It is very rare that the accused is ever treated as being innocent (the McCanns are an odd exception to this).

Islamic terrorists no longer need to do anything to “destroy western civilisation,” we are quite happy doing it ourselves…

How much is liberty worth?

More than just a philosophical question in this day and age – we seem to have an answer. Reading the BBC online news today, it seems that the recompense for spending two days under wrongful detention is a measly £7,500. In a great example of how the “freedoms” we cherish in western democracies are being thrown away as the government panders to the fear generated by a largely right-wing media we get this news item:

A man accused of being an illegal immigrant while on holiday in Northern Ireland has been paid £7,500 after he was wrongly put in prison.
The Immigration Service wrongly detained the man in Maghaberry jail.
Frank Kakopa who is originally from Zimbabwe, was on a short break with his wife and young children in 2005, when he was stopped at Belfast City Airport.
Despite showing documentation that he lived and worked in England, he was taken to prison.
He was strip-searched and held for two days.
This had happened despite his manager in England confirming both his legal residency and employment position.

So, let me see if I understand this. Mr Kakopa was carrying the proper documentation for his residency status, his employer confirmed his residency and employment status yet the Immigration Service still strip searched him and detained him for two days.

What on Earth is going on here? Are we now so firmly entrenched into the habit of dismantling human rights that this news item is buried in a relative backwater are of the BBC (I only found it by chance – it hasn’t made any of the major news bulletins). Now, I have actually used Belfast City Airport (comically named “George Best Airport”…) and the staff there are, generally, officious, obnoxious and obstinate – however the thought of them deciding to detain me for two days despite being a British Citizen is mind boggling.

The lack of an outcry over this is equally shocking – I am sure if it had been a white businessman people like Lord Rees-Mogg would be the first to complain how we need to reinvigorate our human rights approaches.  As this person seems to meet all the criteria for an outrage – a professional worker (structural engineer) travelling with his family – I can only assume that his detention, and the total lack of news about it, is entirely related to his skin colour. (Not an original assessment, I agree – even the BBC article implies it…)

The article continues:

Mr Kakopa, a structural engineer, said the experience still haunted him. His family were left at the airport and Mr Kakopa said he had no idea what had happened to them.
“They wouldn’t allow me to make phone calls – I was actually detached from the world,” he said.
“I did not know where my kids were taken to.”
“It is still difficult to believe that what was supposed to be a relaxing break for my family turned out to be our worst nightmare.”
“I was locked up with convicted criminals, having committed no crime, while my wife and young children were left abandoned at the airport of a strange country worrying about where I was and how I was being treated.”

In some respects Mr Kakopa is very, very lucky in that he was carrying a lot of proof and documentation – if for whatever reason he had left one of the critical documents at home in England, he may have found himself detained indefinitely until the Immigration Service deported him. Wouldn’t that have been good? I wonder, how much the out of court settlement would have been then…

All my life, I have read about this sort of behaviour in “foreign” countries, and it normally accompanies some diatribe about how this is proof [insert dictatorship] is a bad regime etc. It is the sort of you expect to hear the evil Commies doing, or Mugabe or Korea. But good old Blighty? Shocking. No wonder the home office declined to comment – what could they ever say which would justify detaining someone who was carrying the correct documentation.

In this day an age, a mistake (or malicious act) by the immigration and security personnel is not a trivial thing. These unelected, barely accountable people have the power to detain without trial or deport people without reason. Despite this already shocking state of affairs we seem to be sleepwalking into granting them more and more powers – all while removing what little safeguards remain.

A very sad state of affairs. I wonder who really won the cold war…

Lord Rees-Mogg Rightwing Hypocrisy Shock

But then again, would you expect anything different from Lord Rees-Mogg? For some odd reason, the Times Online blog area subtitles his blog with:

Wisdom online from Lord Rees-Mogg, Times columnist and former editor

Blimey. Do they have a different meaning for the word Wisdom?

Anyway, in an outpouring of idiocy I have only just stumbled upon (it is from May), Lord Rees-Mogg shows that he is no coward when it comes to hypocritically reversing his viewpoint when it his “kind” of person who gets targeted. Titled “Bring Back the Prima Facie Test” it gives an insight into the double standards that rightwing hate-mongers love to live with. This article begins:

After 9/11 Britain signed a Treaty with the United States to make extradition easier. That was a natural response to the threat of terrorism. However, the Treaty has not been used against terrorists, but against a number of businessmen. There is now a fear of American extradition, which has led to the suicide of Neil Coulbeck, an innocent witness in the NatWet case.

This pretty much says it all. Lord Rees-Mogg was one of the pundits clamouring for harsher laws and reduced burdens of proof following the 11 Sep attack, and this increased after the 7 Jul attacks in London. Prior to this extradition treaty, a nation which wanted to extradite a UK citizen for trial had to provide sufficient evidence that a “reasonable person” would find the accused guilty – this is a lower standard of proof than is required during an actual trial and it can get a bit confusing. Even Lord RM writes: (Emphasis mine)

Prima facie is not a very high standard of proof; it only requires that evidence should be produced on which a reasonable man could think the accused was guilty of a crime. Yet it is a very important protection.

Yes, it is a very important protection. The idea that a citizen of this country can be sent abroad to face trial without the requestion nation providing this basic level of evidence is horrific. Any citizen. Remember (and this is important) a terrorist suspect is an innocent person. They are protected by the same rights which protect every one else. It has been stressed time and time again that removing the rights from one group of innocent people removes them from everyone. This seems to have been overlooked by the jingoistic right wingers.

I can only assume that, Lord Rees-Mogg assumed that this change to the treaty (“a natural response to the threat of terrorism“) would only impact those guilty of terrorism. That these people would be extradited without sufficient evidence to pass the basic prima facie test was ignored, because lets be honest here, the people getting extradited were going to be a bit, erm, different, than Rees-Mogg’s circle of people. Who cares if a few swarthy characters from lower income groups get sent to illegal detentions eh?

I can only sympathise with the family of Mr Coulbeck and my heart goes out to them for their loss. I do notice, though, that Lord Rees-Mogg has passed sufficient judgement on him (“an innocent witness“) to make me question why he would kill himself rather than provide evidence at a trial. Is it because he was actually a suspect – placing him in the same “innocent suspect” category as the potential terrorists this legislation was aimed at? Lord RM writes:

British businessmen do not trust American criminal law because of plea bargaining, in which the horrors of some American prisons are used as a threat to impel people to plead guilty in return for an agreed sentence. The difference between a possible fifty years in a violent prison and two years in a country camp can be a very compelling argument.

Well, blimey. If British businessmen – with access to lawyers and political support – do not trust the American criminal justice system what hope is there for some one on terrorist charges? Plea bargaining has no place in any justice system but that is a topic for another day, and can you imagine the amount of bargaining which would be taking place if someone was accused of terrorism. Under duress (i.e. threat of execution, threat of years in a borderline legal detention centre etc) people will say anything they think will help themselves. This means people will lie, will implicate innocent people, anything. If businessmen are scared that other businessmen will burn them to avoid huge fines, imagine what people will do and say to avoid the death penalty or a life in Camp X-Ray’s descendants… With a stunning skill of stating the obvious, Lord RM adds to one of his paragraphs:

… Counter terrorist laws, and laws against organised crime can apply to ordinary businessmen, and frame the judgment of business transactions.

Who would have thought it eh? Laws apply to every one. If you make something illegal for terrorists, it becomes illegal for every one else as well. Wow. This touches on another topic which should wait for a rainy day – should businesses and businessmen be treated differently from “ordinary” citizens in the eyes of the law? Corporate actions can destroy the lives of millions, leave countless numbers bankrupt and in poverty and even result in countless deaths (or does it no longer count when they are in, say, India?). Despite this, there is still the idea it is a bit of a “victimless crime” and not something the government and police should be interested in. In fact (if you read most right wing rhetoric) they should spend more time stopping that poor youth robbing the equally poor little old lady and let the big businesses get on with the job of robbing everyone.

With a final burst of hypocrisy, Lord Rees-Mogg concludes with:

I do not know whether the 2003 Act is compatible with Human Rights law, but I should have thought not. We should bring back the prima facie evidence requirement, which still governs extradition to the vast majority of countries.

For once I agree with the Lord, but for vastly different reasons. It is entertaining to read someone like Lord Rees-Mogg citing Human Rights law to defend his opinion, normally it is a diatribe about how human rights are a farce and how the UK should withdraw from the agreements to uphold the laws.

Still, is anyone really surprised when a hate filled rightwing windbag displays masses of hypocrisy when it comes to their “chums?”

WingNuts, WingNuts, WingNuts

By Belatu-Cadros, the fools at WingNut WorldNetDaily make it easy for people to ridicule them. It is like the Gods themselves have decided that the things (for want of a better word, they certainly are not people) who write for WND need to publicly humiliate themselves on a regular basis. If it were any other website, I would have assumed good faith and decided it was a massive outpouring of irony and satire. Sadly, this is WND. These raving lunatics actually believe what they write.

Today, I braved the wrath of Ambisagrus and visited the wingnuts (no, I wont link to them, sorry). Blimey, I certainly wasn’t disappointed.

In a post titled “Norris endorses, surge follows : Huckabee sees spike in online donations after column” we get a wonderful example of why people attribute mysterious effects to routine things.

Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee, a GOP presidential candidate, is experiencing a surge in campaign cash just days after Chuck Norris wrote a column in WND endorsing him.

Well, isn’t cause and effect a wonderful thing. I prayed over and over to Toutatis that this was just a jokingly ironic post, but I can’t find any evidence of it. Obviously this is why wing nuts in general struggle to appreciate what science and experiment tells them, and from this evidence it seems trying to get them to learn about (for example) evolution is a definite non-starter.

If you look through WingNutDaily, (Sorry, cracked and linked) there are numerous times that good old Chuck has endorsed him and none of these resulted in a sudden upsurge. The fact the upsurge took place a random length of time after the endorsement may be taken to imply the endorsement was irrelevant to it. That would be for normal people though, not our wing nuts.

Obviously the whole article is nothing more than a thinly veiled shill for how great Chuck really is. I suspect he may be in the process of negotiating a pay rise or something (well, its not like he has a film career to fall back on) because there is a whole list of “jokes” such as:

  • “Chuck Norris has already been to Mars; that’s why there are no signs of life there.”
  • “They wanted to put Chuck Norris on Mount Rushmore, but the granite wasn’t tough enough for Chuck’s beard.”
  • “Chuck Norris can lead a horse to water AND make it drink.”
  • “Chuck Norris is currently suing NBC, claiming that ‘Law & Order’ are the names of his left and right legs.”
  • “Chuck Norris sleeps with a night-light because the dark is afraid of him.”
  • “Superman owns a pair of Chuck Norris pajamas.”
  • “There is no theory of evolution. Just a list of creatures Chuck Norris has allowed to live.”
  • “When Chuck Norris does push-ups, he doesn’t push himself up. He pushes the Earth down.”
  • “When the boogeyman goes to sleep every night, he checks his closet for Chuck Norris.”

Yeah, I cant see what is funny about them either – other than how pathetic they are for an adult to be proud that 12 year olds are saying things like this about them… (When I was a lad it was similar things about people like Mr T… We grew up though).

The next post which caught my eye was a priceless (as in of no value) gem entitled “Now, God banished from Washington Monument.” This bit of idiotic nonsense begins:

The National Park Service has banished God from a key display of America’s Christian heritage in Washington, and a California pastor who regularly leads teams of visitors to see markers of the nation’s religious history wants Him restored.

First off, all I can say to this is BRILLIANT! Now we know how to banish God from places we don’t want him, we can go about getting rid of all the earthquakes, floods, droughts etc that he is supposed to be sending us. Who would have thought it would have been so trivial to banish an omnipotent, omniscient deity – all you need to do is remove an engraving. Amazing.

On further reading it seems even more trivial to get rid of the sulky, grumpy, attention seeking deity that so many nutters Christians fall down on their knees before. Some all powerful being this is, Anextiomarus would kick his ass any day of the week – and beat old Chucky baby for good measure.

It seems that all you need to do to Banish God is to move a monument with the words LAUS DEO on slightly so it is harder to read.

That is it.

It really is that simple.

What are you waiting for! With a few hours effort we can force the Christian god into a small cave somewhere and Nerull can finish him off for good. Great eh?

If you doubt me about how trivial this is:

“I could barely make out some etching looking down from that bird’s eye view, but there was simply no way I would have known what it said unless I already knew the saying was there – ‘Laus Deo,'” [Pastor Tood] DuBord [of the Lake Almanor Community Church] said.

From this pathetic start, WND continues to whine on for what seems like an eternity. They interview national parks staff to find out why this monument has been moved (pretty inconclusive but they dont let that stop them) and eventually finish with this tear jerker from Pastor Todd:

“Because there is no longer any way for the public to learn about ‘Laus Deo’ at the Washington Monument, and so as to preserve its history for future generations, I am respectfully requesting the National Park Service to do either 1, 2, or 3,…(1) Pull out the replica from the wall far enough for it to be seen on all sides; (2) Place the replica on a pole that turns, so that the public can spin it and see each side, within its glass container; (3) Place a mirror behind the replica and lean it so that people can be encouraged to see the 4th side inscription which is now hid. AND… please add some wording back on the descriptive display at its base or on the wall behind it that interprets and explains ‘Laus Deo’ so the public can both see it and understand what it means,” he wrote.

You see, failing to teach people Latin is the real reason God is banished – obviously we wont go into the centuries in which Latin was a language spoken by pagans who had never even heard of this particular god. Would Pastor Todd be so obsessive about an inscription which read Praise Saturn? (And this doesn’t even begin to open the can of worms which is the arbitrary dates the Christians have chosen for their festivals…)

I doubt it. Send Chuck round to the National Parks and he can kill everyone until they move the stone back…

By the way – if you are interested Pastor Todd is a proper nutter.

Just keeping to my word, previously, and trying to lighten up the blog with pictures.

I know this is also in the photostream to the right here, but I don’t think many people click on those images.

Generally, I have quite mixed opinions about Zoos. I agree they can provide a wonderful service and maintain populations of animals which may otherwise go extinct, and more importantly they open access to the wonders of the animal kingdom to people who would, otherwise, never get to see them.

However, I often think the animals in the zoo never seem really happy. (I am aware this is a massive anthropomorphication, but so what.)

Painfully Stupid Commenters

This is just a quick aside to follow up my previous post, I have read a few more comments on Simon Jenkins’ article and they are so painfully stupid – yet worryingly representative of public thought – that I am going to have to blog about them again soon. If you don’t believe me about the idiots, read the times online article.

Islam vs The West

At the risk of being seen as a Times Online Groupie, I find myself wanting to comment (and draw attention) to yet another excellent post there. In an excellent article titled “The biggest threat to the West lies within itself, not with Islam,” Simon Jenkins examines some of the myths and stupid arguments being thrown around in international relations today.

In a nutshell, Mr Jenkins takes the current ideas about “Islam” being out to destroy the West to task and exposes some of the nonsense being thrown around the corridors of power (and regurgitated by people to stupid to know any better, and sadly by people who do know better but are too bad to do better). Mr Jenkins contrasts the recent letter to the Pope by 138 Muslim leaders with correspondence in the 9th century, before the fall of Byzantium. Quite rightly, he points out that this letter is not the ideal peace offering that some try to make it out to be, but in reality is an acceptance of the false war between Christianity and Islam – a war which only really exists in the minds of the insane fundamentalists on both sides trying to bring around the end of the world. For example, Mr Jenkins comments on the implication that if Islam and Christiantity do not stand together there will be war:

Such an implication is grandiose, dangerous and wrong. It implies that the Muslim world has a politico-military power that is in some sense equal and opposite to that of Christianity. This elevates the so-called jihadist tendency within Islam to a status that it does not have and should never think it has. It suggests Islam has sufficient power to confront and possibly undermine the West. It implies a balance of power parallel with a balance of theological interpretation.

Such an implication feeds a no less dangerous paranoia in the West. By stating that the “survival of the world” might turn on a struggle between Islam and Christianity, the letter reinforces the militarist fantasies of neoconservatives who see the world as just such a struggle. It is a paranoia which, since 9/11, has driven the “war on terror” and fomented the tension and antagonism to the West to which the scholars’ letter is so vacuous a response.

It is worrying that the idea there is an Islamic war against the “west” is so prevalent in modern society. People have, through fault or design, conflated the idea that buildings are western civilisation and that “our” society is so fragile the loss of lives and property will see the end of it. It defies any amount of understanding I possess, that people who are so wedded to western society they would happily bomb other nations back into the stone age to defend it are so unaware of what a society is that they will equally dismantle every positive aspect of it at the same time.

Unfortunately this is a collective madness which seems to have overcome the entire western world. The neocons and hawks in various administrations have successfully convinced the public that “Islam” is trying to destroy the west and make our “free, democratic nations” into scared, theocracies with no civil liberties. The real act of evil madness comes in the chosen method with which people defend said “free democracies.” We seem to defend our freedom by removing it. We protect our liberties by sacrificing them.

Madness.

Simon continues:

The chief threat to world security at present lies in the capacity of tiny groups of political Islamists to goad the West into a rolling military retaliation. Extremists on each side feed off the others’ frenzied scenarios so as to garner money and political support for their respective armies of the night. Each sees the other as a cosmic menace and abandons communal tolerance and peaceful diplomacy to counter it. The authors of this letter would be better employed vetting their own blood-curdling mullahs and madrasahs than in writing platitudes to the Pope.

Again, spot on. There is no denying the fact that there are evil, hate filled Islamic religious leaders who seek to destroy what they see as decadent western civilisation. The fact is, they can not destroy it. Freedom and democracy are stronger forces than hatred. People may die, but surely the concept and the liberty will live on. If killing people were enough to stifle a democracy, then the United States would still be part of the British Empire. Even if the minority of radical mullahs were able to kill a hundred people each, “western civilisation” would remain unscathed. The ideas born in the French and American revolutions, in the renaissance and in the subsequent years are robust enough to live on. They are attractive enough that people will gravitate towards them – to such an extent that it requires government oppression to prevent this happening.

Sadly, the extremists in the west are supplying that government oppression. Islam can never destroy the west, but the west can.

Simon Jenkins’ article is so well written and (IMHO) correct, I could end up quoting every paragraph here – and I dont want to do that, because I need to save space to savage some of the comments. I will restrain myself to one more quote from the original:

There may be young Muslims and their teachers with a vested interest in talking up such a war. There are those in the West with the same interest, such as the booming armaments and security industries with their think tanks and lobbyists.

Such vested interests need to be exposed as such. To portray Islam as a whole as a concerted threat to western security, and to imply that the West’s democratic institutions and freedoms are not proof against that threat, is absurd and close to treason. Then to demand that western freedoms be dismantled and stored away for the duration of a “war on terror” is to wave the flag of surrender.

This defeatism led the American Congress to allow its president to authorise torture and detention without trial in what Senator Robert Byrd called “the slow unravelling of the people’s liberties”. It enabled a British Home Office to curb free speech and habeas corpus. It arms police, fortifies buildings and impedes the free movement of citizens. It makes every Christian suspicious of every Muslim.

When Thomas Paine told America that “we have it in our power to begin the world over again”, he meant by example, not military conquest. His utopianism was a brave, confident and open-hearted one. That of his successors is sinking into the opposite, a fearful, besieged, security-obsessed wimpishness, in which Muslims rightly feel threatened by the arbitrary violence of the American right.

That, to me, sums it up perfectly. Now I can move on to the entertainment and the idiocy which lives in the comments (it is interesting how so many people in New Zealand or Australia feel qualified to pass comment on the effects of recent immigration policies in western Europe. Either they are recent expats which makes it very hypocritical or they are simply feeding off media lies and confusion…). I will begin with this bit of confused nonsense:

You ar wrong Mr Chui.[a previous commenter] Not conservative perversity, but liberal ineptitude of its perception of human rights. People of colour can do no wrong. Its the white man with their skills and their willingness to develop the world that are the monsters. The tragedy of Africa, notably Zimbabwe, is the product of its near non existent morals on human freedoms. Liberalism is so ensconced with its directionless policies on fundamental human rights to the point that it even denies the right of the parent to raise his/her family in the manner she/he deems fit.!! Same applies to religious bodies. The London Tube bombings are the direct result of this so called liberal ineptitude. There is no democracy . They pass laws dictating to me how to run and manage my tiny little country pub in the heart of the British country side. That’s Liberal democracy which we are forced to accept. Bruce B, Sutton, UK

This typifies “middle Englands” attitudes towards human rights – a term often spat out with hatred and the implication that it means the persons rights are being downtrodden. This is, of course, nonsense but it remains a popular idea. Sadly, few people spend more than a moment following their own ideas to their logical conclusions and, as a result, end up with (for example) the idea that a parent’s rights outweigh the rights of anyone else in their family. Bruce obviously has issues with legislation on how he can run his pub so I can only assume he wants to put his staff and customers health and safety at risk.

American readers are always a good source of religious nonsense:

Mr. Jenkins is half correct in a walking backwards sort of way. The threat to the West is twofold, first multiculturalism and run amok secularism has destroyed the nourishing root of Judeo-Christian morality from whence the West draws its strength. So once weakened Islam like an opportunistic infection can bring down this once mighty oak. It is delusional to look at the empty husk of our dying Democracies and think they are anything as robust as they were even 50 years ago. Too many writers like Oriana Fallacia, Robert Spencer and a host of others have been crying for the West to wake up, while men like Mr. Jenkins sing lullabies. Paul T, Phoenix, USA Arizona

It is sad that Paul T has such a poor understanding about what “democracy” means. It has nothing to do with Judeo-Christian morality and it certainly can not be “weakened” by secularism. The only threat to democracy in the west is the rampant violation of civil liberties and the massive growth of a “policed state.” Paul T obviously skipped what ever lessons Americans teach politics, philosophy and social studies in.

Next up is a lesson in logical fallacies. This is a comment which is nothing more than ad hominem attacks and a false appeal to ridicule:

There’s always some nitwit, some appeaser around to say “We’re not really involved in a global conflict.” We had Jimmie Carter to refer to the West’s “inordinate fear of Communism,” and now we have Simon Jenkins to pour his fatuous platitudes all over the Moslem jihad. That proves how cosmopolitan, how broadminded he is — he never takes offense when visiously attacked. I guess there’s no need to worry about Islam. “Jihad” is a peaceful word that just means “struggle” — just like “Mein Kampf.” Larry Eubank, Bloomington, Indiana, U.S.A.

There isn’t any point in me addressing the points made here – because there aren’t any. Larry is simply wrong and poorly educated.

If you have the time, and can stand the idiocy, read the comments on Simon Jenkins’ post. They show how people can be very, very wrong. If you are short on time, just read Simon’s post – it shows how sometimes someone can get it very, very right.

Religion and the Military – Stupidity at its best

In the times recently, there was a piece on the boss of the army, General Dannatt claiming more should be done to equip soldiers for a life after death:

“In my business, asking people to risk their lives is part of the job, but doing so without giving them the chance to understand that there is a life after death is something of a betrayal,” he said.

Now, it goes without saying that, while soldiers who think death will give them a wonderful afterlife (where have I heard this before) may well fight better, it is worrying that the Chief of the General Staff is becoming concerned about the soldiers’ afterlives. Does he anticipate lots of them dying? Is he revving up for a jihad holy war in Iran? Is he trying to soften the blow when hundreds of body bags come home – at least the families can think their loved ones are in a better place (along with all the goldfish, cats, dogs, budgies, etc…)?

Personally, I hope not and I do actually think this is just an example of how evangelical Christians are fundamentally idiots. Dannatt continues:

“I think there is very much an obligation on . . . a Christian leader to include a spiritual dimension into his people’s preparations for operations, and the general conduct of their lives,” he said. “Qualities and core values are fine as a universally acceptable moral baseline for leadership, but the unique life, death, resurrection and promises of Christ provide that spiritual opportunity that I believe takes the privilege of leadership to another level.”

Which pretty much proves my point. Well spoken idiocy is still idiocy. Moving on from his witterings though, the comments are where the real stupid burns away. As you can imagine, the words of a rightwing, Christian soldier appeal to all the baser instincts of the Times’ readership. This leads to comments like:

Would that we have a world free of all violence: until then, our armed forces serve to protect US. Forget the rights and wrongs of Afghanistan or Iraq: our forces are there whether they like it or not and so THEY at least deserve our full support. Why should not a general offer spiritual support and advice? Oh, and does God exist? Or can anyone here prove that they exist rather than being a figment of my imagination? Paul R. Kent

Would that I could meet Paul R from Kent and see if his imagination makes his nose hurt. I agree 100% that our forces deserve our full support, but I have to question what value support they are getting from being told that death is great and a wonderful afterlife awaits them as long as they adhere to Creed X.

Gen Dannat is not a war Monger, nor a fanatic, If he were he’d be keeping our Boys out there instead he’s going against Govt Policy & trying to get them back home to their families And trying to get them better equipped and paid so if there is a need to fight they are More likely to survive than they are now. As for his Christianity, look around you…this country could certainly do with getting back to it’s traditional British Christian based Family Roots. Adrian Peirson, Bedford, Awakening Britain

Wow. It is that special kind of history again. “This country” (assuming Mr Peirson means the Great Britain) has no “traditional British Christian based Family Roots.” Giving them capital letters doesn’t change anything. Traditionally the British peoples are worshippers of dead religions with a family and social structure unrecognisable today. If he means that weird form of “traditional” which has an arbitrary start date then when is it? Does he mean the Catholic traditions, Anglican traditions? Both? Neither?

When people write idiotic things like this, they tend to mean the Victorian traditions which are far from traditional (yet have captured the public imagination as “real history” – especially in Scotland, Wales and Ireland). Any one who harks for a return to “Victorian” values is certifiably insane.

True, religion (or rather our response to God) is a personal matter, but it is clearly not a private matter, as Jesus clearly demonstrated by his final words to the disciples to ” go and make disciples of all nations… ” So, General Dannet’s comments are entirely understandable. Jesus requires a very personal decision from every single one of us to either believe what He said or choose not to believe what He said. General Dannet is simply wanting to ensure that each soldier does infact know what Jesus said so they can make that very personal choice for themselves prior to going into battle because after death, if Jesus’ words are true ,as in His parable of the rich man amd lazarus ..it will definitely be too late to change ones mind. rebecca pluke, hemingford grey,

Hmm. I assume Rebecca thinks every soldier in Britain managed to avoid the compulsory religious education lessons and a quick chat from Gen Dannatt will rectify their ignorance. Hmmm. Still, her nonsense is mild compared to this bit of drivel:

The Victorian British Army would have understood where General Dannatt was coming from. The British nation and it’s great army then was a God fearing nation who honoured Jesus Christ and respected the Bible. God’s favour on England from the reformation to the second world war is obvious, God made us great. Now we have turned away from christianity and become weaker and embraced other religions and no religion. Queen Victoria said….The secret of Britain’s greatness is the Holy Bible. Only the blood of Jesus Christ can wash away sin and make us fit for heaven. Nothing else has the power to do this. Therefore British soldiers and us dying outside of Christ have no hope. Philip, Dorset, England

The only positive thing I can take from this is that is proves my point about how people (idiots) think anything Victorian is traditional and good. For those outside the UK, Dorset is very rural with all that implies about peoples intelligence. Philip has obviously been reading too many novels about Sharpe et al., to realise that the “God Fearing” nation under Queen Victoria was very dissimilar to what he describes here. The whole “Gods Favour” thing is so stupid it burns. Philip also seems to assume Queen Victoria was so knowledgeable that everything she says has divine authority – Tutatis forbid she say something stupid or proven wrong… As for the blood of Jesus Christ… Does this mean that EVERYONE who died before Jesus went to hell? What sort of sacrifice was it for Jesus to make when he was actually giving up the mortal realm to go home? It is a bit like me claiming leaving work at the end of the day is the ultimate sacrifice (the opposite is true).

The stupid, painful as it is, continues:

Jesus, the author of the Christian Faith said “Except a man be born of water and the spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God”. Dying on the battlefield does not guarantee a place in heaven. Obeying Jesus’ commandments does. Brian Pennington, Launceston, Tasmania

Actually, I would have thought the killing part of being on a battlefield makes it hard to obey Jesus. Did he have some sort of get out clause which allows a secular authority to override his dads main commandments? Is the override only allowed for killing (which could explain why homosexuals are still persecuted)? Also, more obviously, where can I find this book called “the Christian Faith” which Jesus wrote? I mean, he didn’t even have the courtesy to write the bible…

From the depths of idiocy came this nonsense: (emphasis mine)

At one time it was gays who had to stay in the closet – now it’s anyone with a faith that is serious enough that they want others to think about the big issues of life too. But good for General Sir Richard Dannatt in raising his head above the parapet by daring to suggest that believers have as much right to speak about their faith as atheists do about theirs. The snipers will no doubt attack him for what they will dub his outrageous involvement of personal views in a public office, for they always manage to think that their atheistic, secular worldviews are soemhow neutral in a way that the General’s aren’t. But never mind the snipers, Sir Richard. Thank God for a man who faces up to the realities of life and death! Mike Beaumont, Oxford, UK

Blimey. Since when have the bloody “faithful” shut up talking about their belief? All the major newspapers have religious correspondents. All have daily references to God and the Christian faith. The rest of the imagined oppression (a Christian speciality…) is pure drivel. A secular worldview is, almost by definition, more neutral than Dannatts….

Fortunately it is not all bad – and I have had my fill of nutters, if you want to read more go to the Times article itself – for balance (does this count as “Both Sides?”) we have:

Soldiers beware – your military leader believes there is something good waiting for you after death! Let’s hope operational planning is not based on this delusion. ken Jones, Dundee, UK

and

It’s bad enough having religious nutters on the other side let alone your own. TomS, Essex, UK

Strikes me, as that says it all.

Atheism, Faith and Idiotic Confusion

It seems that all the PR work by Dawkins, Hitchens, PZ Myers, Harris et al., is still not fully driving home the message of what atheism is and what atheism means. Part of me feels that, for all the good intentions in the world this is something they will never achieve, and a small part of me feels that “organised” atheism is seriously a step in the wrong direction.

At its most basic level, being an atheist implies nothing about a persons intelligence, rationality, political leaning, attitude towards others, scientific literacy, education (and so on). All being an atheist means is the person does not believe in gods. Nothing else. Al Kafir Akbar is a recent example of an atheist who is not rational, intelligent or scientifically literate (and I dread to think what his political leaning is… 🙂 ). Campaigns such as the “Scarlet A” and “Brights” are, IMHO of course, eventually doomed to failure as the differences between any two atheists start to far outweigh their single shared characteristic. In the past people have mooted ideas such as atheists becoming “politicised,” will such a thing ever work? Would you, for example, vote for a raving right / left (depending on your own orientation) lunatic simply based on his atheism?

For me, the worrying thing about all this – along with the growing sycophancy which surrounds the more prominent atheists (Dawkins lost a bit of support when he dropped a clanger and used the term “Jewish,” but the others still get the hero worship…) – is that it starts to scream “religion.” I am sure everyone remembers election campaigns where one church or another pledges the support of its followers to Politician X because of his beliefs, as soon as the prominent atheists pledge their support (and the support of their sycophants, followers, readers) to a politician because s/he is an atheist the final difference will be gone [*].

In recent months, the furore over the the Scarlet A struck cynical old me as if people were starting to demand an atheist doctrine which was going to be laid down by the high priest (pontifex maximus? We all know where that took us…). People who disagreed with PZ Myers over the “A” for example, were savaged (online, rather than a visit to the lion enclosure) and for one reason or another, large numbers of atheists have fallen in line and display the A on their sites. Now, I must stress, I do not think this is a bad thing in general. If you want to put an A on your site to denote you are an atheist, great. I think it is really cool. I am concerned about the process which brought this about though.

Reading through the ever entertaining times online today, I came across an article by “Dolan Cummings” in the “Battle for Ideas” section. Titled “Count me out of atheism’s creed,” this article expresses some of the points of view I am trying to make, but mostly in a more readable manner… I found this bit quite relevant: (emphasis mine)

From attempts to popularise the term ‘bright’ as a positive identity to calls for atheists to be included on the roster of BBC Radio 4’s ‘Thought for the Day’, it seems that some want to establish atheism as an alternative, non-religious camp for people to belong to. But atheism itself ought to be the least interesting thing about atheists, who surely have various and often conflicting beliefs and passions of their own.

Everyone who writes for this blog is an atheist, yet Heather and I have (at times) viewpoints which are at polar opposites. Calling us “atheists” with an implied commonality of purpose seems to gloss over that. If you search around the various atheist blogs, there are mountains of interesting, entertaining and educational blogs – all written by atheists. There are also lots (sadly too many on the blogroll now) of blogs which are little more than people shouting “I am an atheist” over and over.

For a long time people (famous or otherwise) have been trying to get the unthinking masses to realise that atheism is not a religion, chanting is as a mantra sets that task back considerably. If people want to challenge irrational belief then it needs to be done with logic and reason, not with formulating a “counter-church” for people to rally around. Take this idiotic comment on the Dolan Cummings’ article:

Atheism is not non-belief – it’s active faith in the non-existence of God – an unprovable hypothesis. Atheism is just another religion. Richard, Colchester, UK

Pure stupidity. Sadly, as atheism becomes more of an “active” process, people may start to think this even more.

Before I finish, I think I should stress I am not a supporter of the quisling atheists who seem to think religion should be tolerated and pandered to. Religion (any) does not deserve special status or special treatment. Irrational idiocy should be challenged at every juncture. I love to read Sam Harris, Pharyngula, Dawkins et al. I agree with an awful lot of what they have to say. However, there is no holy doctrine of atheism and I do reserve the right to disagree with the prominent spokespersons when they are (IMHO) wrong.

The greatest challenge for atheism is learning how to “cure” people of religion, without becoming a religion. Are people up to that task yet?

* I am more than aware that the chances of a prominent public figure in either the US or UK coming out as an atheist is close to zero at this time, the future may be different. Also, rather than the politician being an atheist per se, s/he could simply espouse atheist-friendly policies.

Pipex is still crap

Even though I had thought my problems with pipex were over, the BT engineer had come out and supposedly fixed the line, it seems I am still paying over the odds for a non-existent service.

Thinkbroadband.com Speedtest results

I am aware ADSL is dependant on the number of subscribers at the local exchange but I also know that there are no new subscribers hanging off my exchange. From the chart you can see that in Jun and early July, the service was acceptable. In August it was non-existent (completely) and since it was restored it has been painfully slow.

Pipex is a terrible ISP. Pipex customer service is borderline incompetent. If you are looking for a new ISP, steer clear of Pipex.

Baseless Creationist Arguments Find a New Home

Blimey, yesterday, Heather wrote about some empty nonsense being spouted by a blog on the atheist blogroll. In a nutshell, Tom Stelene, writing on the Al-Kafir Akbar blog, has spent a few days recently, ranting about how environmentalism is a “secular religion,” how global warming is a scam, how people who care about about the environment are dirt worshippers and so on. Over the last few days, Heather, Blacksun Journal and Salient have drawn attention to the nonsense he spouts.

Sunrise in AutumnTom Stelene has tried a comeback blast with a post titled “Deniers” (Blog Action Day Continues), and it is well worth reading if only to see the logical holes presented as “argument” and the good rebuttals from BlackSun and Salient. They have both done an excellent job of taking his nonsense to task.

Not being grown up enough to be bothered engaging in reasoned debate, I am simply going to point out some of the more obvious bits of nonsense Tom has turned into bits on the internet. Fisking is fun. If we start with the opening paragraph:

Amidst the latest politically-correct trend of environmentalists to throw out the smear, “global warming deniers,” I sense that by and large they probably have little familiarity with the science and reasoning as to why some deny “global warming” – as most narrow-minded religionists are unfamiliar with the reasons and arguments of atheists – or, better still: “God-deniers.”

Sunrise in Autumn 2By Toutatis, that is a difficult sentence to read. It is completely meaningless but it is still difficult to read. It makes a single attempt at a real claim and, personally, I doubt that this (basic) claim is true. If he is saying, as it seems to read, that his detractors have little understanding as to the science about why the detractors deny global warming. After the headache (caused by trying to resolve this tortured line of attribution) cleared, I decided he must be talking about the psychological reasoning as to why some people will pathologically deny the evidence which is presented to them and disproportionately give value to the minority evidence which can be interpreted as arguing against the mainstream. I am sure that there is a term for people who evince this weird behavioural trait, but I am not a psychologist so I have no idea. Generally, most of the people who do this seem to be arguing for the creationist brand of woo.

After I realised where I had seen this idiotic type of “argument” before, it suddenly became clear that pretty much all of Tom’s “arguments” against AGW fall from the Intelligent Design is Science school of idiocy. Blimey. Loki must have been having a field day letting this one out into humanity.

Tom claims his area of expertise is philosophy, so we can look at the first type of argument he uses and critique it with a philosophical point of view attached.

Swan in flight - Vignette addedOne of his oft-repeated claims is that those who advocate action to combat human-influenced climate change are following a “secular religion” – he uses such entertaining terms as “dirt worshippers” and so on. All very clever. This is the same as the ID / Creationist claims that “Darwinism” is a religion. The reality however is different.

Religion, in its normal use of the term, tends to mean people are holding to a belief either without any evidence or will hold to the belief in the face of evidence to the contrary. In keeping with the creationists, Tom holds to his beliefs without any evidence and retains the belief in the face of contrary evidence. Yet he still claims it is his detractors who are holding to a religion. Yeah, seems odd to me as well.

The next issue I have with his claims is, still in keeping with the creationist ideal, the idea that the isolated – often badly interpreted – data which may be interpreted as contradicting Anthropogenic Global Warming is so significant and Earth shattering it means more than the mountains of data which support AGW. Here Tom shows he doesn’t understand science – something he freely admits – and really should try to learn some more before demonstrating his ignorance. The fact of the matter is there is nearly always some data published which can be interpreted as contradicting a scientific theory.

Little Burrowing MammalMost of the time this data is the result of experimental issues – poorly designed experiments, mistaken conclusions, equipment issues and so on – but some times the data is valid and does pose a contradiction. What happens next is part of the broader scientific method – something Tom seems to neglect – the data is double checked, additional experiments are conducted and, if it is verified and repeated, the theory is adjusted to account for the new information. Despite the greatest wishes (and prayers) of the creationists, isolated findings do not count as evidential falsification. Likewise, Tom has fallen into the layperson’s trap of finding isolated contrary reports and attributing to these much greater weight than they deserve.

Here is a quick quiz question: If 99 reports conclude humans are responsible for climate change and one doesn’t, which should you go with?

The most blatant example of Creationist-Inspired woo-nonsense comes in this little gem:

Precisely because science is not my area (that being philosophy) I have to carefully consider both sides, and for some twenty years as a curious observer (if man causes global environmental problems I obviously want to know) I have read and listened to environmentalist claims – which get plenty of publicity – yet the science that challenges them gets ignored.

Chimpanzee on a TreeThis is seriously worthy of some further examination. It reeks of the same lack of understanding which tries to push ID into the classroom. There are not “two sides” to the argument (if anything there are dozens), so considering “both sides” is meaningless. In the past, I have commented on the debate problem which creates the illusion there are “both sides” regarding evolutionary theory. It seems the same fallacy applies with regards to AGW.

The idea that some one completely ignorant of the methodology and theories of climate science can accurately assess the validity of any competing theories (and there are dozens) is interesting – strictly speaking the layperson can go through the published data and draw their own conclusions, but the chances of that conclusion being a valid expression of the reality are not great. It would be better for Tom to say that, because science is not his area he would be better off listening to the scientific consensus.

For my, cynical, mindset, the reason why he has not gone down this route is borne out by the last part of that sentence. It reeks of the conspiracy-theories pushed by all kinds of deviant scientists.

“…yet the science that challenges them gets ignored.”

Utter nonsense. The “science” that challenges the various AGW theories is not “ignored” by any stretch of the imagination. Where science does challenge the theory it is investigated – sadly most of the claims of “science” which challenges turn out to be bad science at best. This, as with most of Tom’s arguments, is straight from the ID School of non-science. When people from wildly unrelated scientific disciplines (at best, often it is complete non-scientists) write a pile of nonsense about Evolution / AGW, it is quite rightly ignored. The pro-ID / Anti-AGW crowd then pick on this nonsense and scream about some hidden cabal who are suppressing the “alternative theories.” Total nonsense.

If some one can prove AGW is false they will be in line for the Nobel, along with all the people who can invent perpetual motion machines, prove ID, falsify GR, falsify SR etc., etc.,

Until then, science is science. You can rail against the findings all you want, but remember it is akin to shouting at the sun that your “research” shows it should be dark…

I mentioned in the past that I was planning to try and find some nice pictures to post on an irregular basis, to liven up the the generally text-heavy nature of the blog.

It has been a while, but I found this one on Flickr and it impressed me enough to want to blog it. I love the mysterious, magical, tolkein-esque feel to the photograph.

I love photographs like this and it makes me wish I lived in New Hampshire!

When Education Fails People…

Well, the wonderful Atheist Ethicist blog has pointed to some, frankly, insane ramblings coming out of one of the Professors at Baylor University. Alonzo has pretty much summed up the logical faults with the ramblings by Dr Roger Olsen so I am largely left to simply poke fun at the complete lack of any form of understanding or critical reasoning abilities his writing demonstrates.

Basically, it is shameful that a professor (albeit of theology) is so incapable of following the basic process of reasoning and it is a sad indictment of the effects of “faith” that it has made him blind to the monumental confusion his posts displays. If Dr Olsen were an undergraduate, you’d hope this sort of writing would pretty much end up with an “F.” At best.

If there were any form of World Justice, this sort of nonsense would soon cause people to stop enrolling at Baylor. Unfortunately, I suspect it will have the opposite effect when other members of the “faithful” see this sort of thing and decide they would rather avoid an education at Baylor than elsewhere.

Dr Olsen sets the tone for his gibberish article with:

I feel sorry for atheists. They are so much in the minority in American society and they are bound to feel some marginalization if not persecution.

Oh what wonderful patronisation. I am not an American so I have no idea if this is true or otherwise. However it speaks volumes as to the true nature of Dr Olsen. Here he is claiming “Atheists” are a tiny minority who feel persecuted. Rather than demonstrating the “Christian charity” he is more than happy to continue, and increase, the persecution. If the word “atheist” were replaced with any other minority group, he would never have had the temerity to write the words which follow on. Equally interestingly, if Atheists are such a minority, why does Dr Olsen care?

With an interesting twist of linguistics and some (frankly confusing) logic, Dr Olsen continues with this wonderful snippet:

Christians should be the last people to persecute anyone — including atheists. But that doesn’t mean Christians have to accommodate atheism as they tolerate and love atheists.

I am intrigued as to how you can “tolerate atheists” while not accommodating them? Obviously Dr Olsen is one of those confused people who believes that freedom of religion does not mean freedom from religion and would rather someone worshipped Baal than didn’t worship any gods.

The confused diatribe continues. Dr Olsen seems to mainly hate atheists because:

So far, at least, atheists haven’t demonstrated their concern for others in any organized way.

Blimey. Here we fall once more into the weird idea that “Atheists” have to become an organised religious group before it can be tolerated. In some respects this is not completely different to some of the ideas kicked around by prominent non-theists such as Richard Dawkins and PZ Myers, where there seems to be some urge to organise and politicise atheism. This is something which has been mentioned here in the past, and largely I am not in favour of it. Atheists only share one thing in common and can cover the full political spectrum as well as demonstrating varying levels of rationality. Creating a Church of Atheism is (IMHO of course) foolhardy and does nothing but pander to the thoughts of nutcases like Dr Olsen.

As Alonzo points out on his blog, atheists do huge quantities of good deeds, build hospitals and donate fortunes to charities etc., but they are generally not done under an “atheist” umbrella. From Dr Olsen’s post, he seems to acknowledge this but continues to rail against atheism for no reason other than the lack of organisation. This really confuses me.

Does Dr Olsen honestly think it is such a big deal? Is every religious organisation a “Good Thing” or are they a combination of good, bad and indifferent? Atheists support religious groups and non-religious groups. Is Dr Olsen completely unaware of any organisation which seeks to help others and is not religiously motivated? If so, I suspect he really does need to broaden his horizons somewhat.

As he continues, Dr Olsen shows that having a doctorate and a professorial appointment is no indication of anything beyond a basic education outside your own highly specialised field (in this case, invisible people theology):

And atheism has no answer to social Darwinism — the idea that society should not help the weak because it’s nature’s way to weed out the less fit.

This is mind boggling. Fifteen year olds come up with more robust arguments. Here, Dr Olsen shows he has no understanding of what “Darwinism” really means, so one is led to suspect he is firmly entrenched in the creationist corner. If he honestly thinks this is either true or a good argument against atheism, I am truly ashamed for Baylor university.

Sadly, it seems he does think this:

Helping the weak goes against nature and if nature is all there is, well, why should we fight it? A person might choose to, but not because of any transcendent, objective obligation (such as that all persons are created in God’s image).

Obviously, Dr Olsen believes that without belief in a deity (any deity) people will not help the weak. He is so woefully unaware of nature that he must either think animals have gods or he has never seen herd animals (for example) helping their weak and sick. That aside, it is simply an empty argument. Belief in a deity is not required to make people help others – atheists who help others disproves it immediately – therefore having this as his basic premise shows his entire line of argument is logically flawed.

Dr Olsen seems to think that if a person chooses to do good simply because they are good person it really means they are an evil atheist. Whereas a person who does good against their will because they are scared the invisible Sky Elf will punish them is actually a good theist.

Madness. Pure Madness.

For Dr Olsen, once he set off on this path of logical fallacy, there was no turning back:

The only logical option for the atheist is nihilism — belief that nothing has any objective meaning or purpose.

Wow. The only people who think this is true are poorly educated, ignorant, theists. I feel sorry for people like this because they really are lost sheep. They would be out in the streets killing, raping and stealing before they killed themselves if it wasn’t for the basic fear they have of the apparently kindly-yet-massively-vengeful deity who watches their every movement.

The reality is for atheists life on Earth tends to have much more meaning and purpose because it is all we have. There is no afterlife where we can relish the rewards for our Earthly behaviour. There is no atonement for every sin. There are no virgins waiting to serve us if we kill ourselves and take a few infidels along for the ride. All we have is here on Earth so, generally, Atheists will (or at least should) do their best to make it the best possible Earth.

As he gets his full head of gibberish going, Dr Olsen writes:

Küng admitted that atheism is a rational “basic choice” and it cannot be proven wrong in any kind of absolute way.

But most atheists demonstrate their basic trust in the meaningfulness of reality by being outraged at evil and injustice, thereby demonstrating that atheism cannot be lived out consistently.

What makes something evil or unjust if nothing like God exists — if nature is all there is? Only subjective choice either by an individual or a society. But that can change and it often does. Without God, the social prophet has no way out of relativism.

Wow. Küng wrote it therefore Dr Olsen’s interpretation must be 100% true…

The massive ironic part of this is that the Religious definitions of good and evil have changed over time along with society. Despite the stone-like qualities of the ten commandments, even these are not set in stone. Nations Under God are allowed to kill if the secular nation decided it is in its best interests. God does not decide, people do. Activities which were “sinful” a thousand years ago are commonplace now and vice versa. Can you imagine picking up a sword, killing fifty people then paying a priest to absolve you of your sin? Well if you believe in God this was acceptable for most of the history of Christianity.

Fundamentally, pretty much everything Dr Olsen has wrote is incorrect or logically flawed. His basic premises are complete nonsense:

  1. Being organised does not make good deeds better, not being organised does not make them worse.
  2. Religious definitions of “good” and “evil” have changed over time in keeping with society.

That such nonsense could be written by a “Professor” (even one of theology) is mind boggling. He seems unable to carry out basic research into anthropology, evolution, history (etc). What does this say about Baylor university…

Baylor and universities like it exist to promote objective values and meaningful existence.

Obviously anything resembling an education is a very distant runner up.

Dr Olsen finishes with:

Finally, let me repeat that I have nothing against atheists as persons and neither does Baylor University.

But in my opinion, they are people of character and virtue in spite of their philosophy of life — not because of it.

In a similar vein, I have nothing against people who believe in fairies, elves, ghosts, trolls, demons, deities etc. In my opinion they are, generally, people of character and virtue in spite of their madness belief, not because of it.
