Crime, Confusion and the Littlejohn Idiocy

Well, I need to start with a disclaimer. Today I had to get the plane to Glasgow and the free newspaper was the Daily Mail. I would never, ever, normally admit to reading this waste of a tree which passes itself off as a newspaper but my choices were limited – I had even read the flight safety leaflet a dozen times.

With a sinking heart I turned the pages of the Mail and I stumbled across an opinion piece by Richard Littlejohn which exceeded the Mails already low standards. Worryingly, as the plane was delayed by about six months (at least it felt that long), I overheard several conversations were other passengers seemed to be broadly in agreement with the nutcase Littlejohn. This might turn out to be long

Showing that despite his poor writing style and complete lack of any grasp of logic, Richard Littlejohn is the master of the strawman fallacy, he wrote a piece titled “Lyrical terrorist is no Joan of Arc.” It is little more than a terror-inspired rant against the new enemy, so I have no qualms about dissecting it here. In good old Daily Mail style, he begins:

The case of Samina Malik, the so- called “lyrical terrorist”, has become a cause celebre.

According to some sections of the media, this woman is a modern-day Joan of Arc.

Malik was convicted at the Old Bailey of terrorism-related offences and was last night given a pathetic nine-month suspended sentence.

Now, interestingly enough, the case of Samina Malik has had almost no coverage in the (UK) general press or the TV news. Describing it as a cause celebre is stretching the truth to whole new levels, even beyond that normally accepted by the mail.

When he writes some sections of the media are implying Malik is a modern-day Joan of Arc, it seems only the Mail has done this – so while it is true in the strictest sense, it is pretty much crap.

The last bit of his opening barrage is really weird. A “nine month suspended sentence” is not pathetic. It is, if anything, excessive considering the offences this woman has committed. We will return to this issue in a moment.

Is it any wonder Osama bin Laden thinks we don’t have the stomach for the fight?

WTF! No, seriously, what on Toutati’s Earth is he going on about here? First off, if Osama Bin Laden thinks “we” (*) dont have the stomach for a fight, why isn’t he fighting us? Why was the last terrorist attack in the UK carried out by British citizens (are they are different “we” fighting?) almost three years ago? I was under the impression Osama Bin Laden wanted to fight the west (not Britain per se) because we were too soft and liberal… Sound familiar Richard?

But more importantly, what has a nine month suspended sentence for writing intimidating poetry got to do with fighting OBL? This is taking the bogeyman to whole new levels.

Anyway, you might be wondering what terrorist atrocity did this woman (Malik, not Littlejohn) commit, for which a 9 month suspended sentence was “pathetic.”

Most comment has centred upon a book of her poetry in which she fantasises about beheadings.

It is claimed she’s a victim of thought crime, persecuted for what she thinks, not what she has done or was intending to do.

Cue Dr Abdul Bari, the senna-haired, Spike Milligan-lookalike [**] “secretary-general” of the Muslim Council of Britain, who protests she has been criminalised merely for harbouring “silly thoughts”.

Well, yes. Here the “journalist,” cardboard-box lookalike Littlejohn states some facts. It must hurt him to do this. After a few insults at the Times (also a right wing hate magazine which pretends to be a news paper but at least it is infinitely more “journalistic” than the Mail will ever be, so no wonder the semi-literate Littlejohn dislikes them) he returns to the real subject of his ire:

But there’s more, much more. The BBC sent a reporter to the street where she lives in Southall to solicit local opinion.

Inconveniently, and instructively, they found not all her neighbours shared the bien pensant view of a misguided innocent falling foul of a heavy-handed police state.

Malik was described on the BBC as a shop assistant from West London.

Which is true, up to a point. But that’s a bit like describing the failed July 21 suicide bombers as “commuters”.

Wow, the bogeyman is working overtime here. Not all of her neighbours thought she was a wonderful person? My God, Burn the Witch! Why is she allowed on the street if people don’t like her!

It seems this is not all she is guilty of either. The last sentence points to where this is going, you see Malik is no ordinary shop assistant…

What they didn’t mention is that she works at Heathrow Airport, in W.H. Smith.

Ah, now it is clear. She is guilty of being Islamic in an Airport. I can see why Littlejohn is so worked up over the short sentence – she should be publicly stoned to death. It seems that, along with military and police service, now minimum wage shop assistants at a national newsagents chain have to sacrifice any hope of having something resembling civil liberties.

Obviously Mr Littlejohn is so outraged at the thought a person both stupid and Islamic could be allowed to work at Heathrow (a place he claims he knows), he has become blind to the fact that the airside staff undergo the same security screening as passengers. Today, I stood in the queue to be scanned at Heathrow (shoes off, belt off, coat off, no fluids over 100ml etc…) and watched as a dozen or so airport staff went through the exact same process. That is as it should be.

Now, with this in mind, one has to ask what her job has to do with her sentencing? Littlebrain Littlejohn continues, talking about the risks of ignoring her stupid writings:

Would you take the risk? Imagine if the police had ignored it, or dismissed this as the ramblings of a “silly girl”.

And then a couple of days later she’d made fantasy a reality, walked into the crowded terminal with a couple of pounds of Semtex and a box of two-inch nails in her handbag, lit the blue touchpaper and blown herself and God knows how many holidaymakers and airport workers to Kingdom Come.

Well, for once this seems a reasonably justifiable fear. There is the risk that lunatics might turn themselves into human fireworks in the airport. This is not what Malik was charged with. Her status as a WHSmith’s shop assistant makes her no more dangerous than anyone else who would do this. Here, Littlejohn has created the illusion of a greater threat to justify his nasty, small minded, evil attitude.

She was also found to be in possession of seditious material – including the Al Qaeda Manual, the Terrorist’s Handbook, the Mujahideen Poisons Handbook, instructions in the use of a Dragunov sniper rifle, other firearms and an RPG, and a guide entitled How To Win Hand-to-Hand Fighting.

You can’t pick up any of those choice publications alongside your Daily Mail on the racks of W.H. Smith, Heathrow.

Oh no! She had an “Al Qaeda Manual!” Hang the seditious witch. She has obviously not only committed the crime of being Islamic in an Airport, but she has also committed the heinous crime of reading books normally reserved for 15 year old boys.

First off, “Al Qaeda Manual” is meaningless. They dont have an AQ Army. There is no “1st Battalion, the London AQ.” The fact she has an electronic book titled “How to win hand to hand fighting” doesn’t carry any more significance than the fact I have an e-book which claims to teach you how to play the guitar (I still cant play it). While these items may be a bit childish, there is no law against ownership of them. If reading them gave you the Ninja fighting skills they claim, then military training the world over would be pointless.

I mean, does she even own a Dragunov Sniper Rifle? I doubt it, so I can’t really see what danger she poses from possessing the book…

Littlejohn’s whole opinion piece is nothing but nonsensical, hysterical fear mongering. As he draws to a close, Littlejohn shows the depths of the fear which grips him:

There are said to be thousands of people living among us who want to kill us and destroy our way of life.

If Malik isn’t one of them, then she at least gives the impression of being more than willing to help them out when they’re busy.

Our fellow citizens are being wiped out on the streets of London by Islamist headbangers who buy into precisely this kind of dangerous fanaticism.

There’s nothing sophisticated about the useful idiots rallying to support her.

This really does defy belief. It is said by people like Littlejohn that there are thousands of people trying to kill us and destroy our way of life. What solution do these fools suggest to fight them? They suggest we dismantle our way of life to stop “them” doing it. Idiocy. Real, full on, idiocy.

“If Malik isn’t one of them” – note the use of “them.” Very telling use of language to hide the fact that even people like Littlejohn are aware Malik wasn’t really some one out to destroy civilisation.

“Our fellow citizens are being wiped out on the streets of London” – WTF! (Twice in one post!). Where this has come from, Toutatis only knows.

Sadly, once in a while Littlejohn is right: There is nothing sophisticated in supporting Malik. It is simply the correct thing to do if we want to defend our way of life and our society – which is what I thought was the overall goal… There is, however, nothing decent, right, honourable or humane about attacking Malik in the manner Littlejohn tries – it is just offensive and petty. A bit like Richard Littlejohn.

Aside: The Times has an article on this as well.

* How dare retards like Littlejohn belittle the sacrifices made by the British Armed forces by claiming it is done in his name… I haven’t seen him in the Tora Bora mountains hunting down AQ…

** The wonderful ad hominem. If it is OK for Littlejohn, it is OK for me and, as such, I will have no problems with occasional, pointless, insults.

Bad Science and Homeopathy

It seems this managed to slip under our radar recently, but the ever-entertaining and educational Ben Goldacre managed to get himself a piece in the Daily Mail, where he points out the madness of homeopathic treatments and the gibberish provided by its adherents.

As always, pretty much everything Ben writes is spot on, but what is breathtaking is the weirdness espoused by the novelist Jeanette Winterson (she is arguing the case “for” homeopathy). It is a good example of how people willingly allow their own gullibility to over power any sense of reason they may have once possessed:

Picture this. I am staying in a remote cottage in Cornwall without a car. I have a temperature of 102, spots on my throat, delirium, and a book to finish writing.

My desperate publisher suggests I call Hilary Fairclough, a homeopath who has practices in London and Penzance. She sends round a remedy called Lachesis, made from snake venom.

Four hours later I have no symptoms whatsoever. Dramatic stuff, and enough to convince me that while it might use snake venom, homeopathy is no snake oil designed for gullible hypochrondriacs.

Wow. What an amazing bit of evidence. Homeopathy must work… Quick, rush out and buy as much snake venom as you can, distil it until there is no venom left and only water and we can cure the cold. Amazing. What are you waiting for!

Actually hang on a second, there is some more evidence, this time from me. Dateline a few weeks ago:

Picture this. I am lying in my bed, sick, coughing and lethargic. I have had the shivers for a couple of days now. The cold sweats are really getting me down and every bone in my body aches. I am at the point where I think I am going to die in the next few minutes. Eventually, through sheer exhaustion I fall asleep.

Four hours later, I wake up and I have no symptoms whatsoever. Dramatic stuff and enough to convince me that things like the cold and flu are short term viral infections which can normally be overcome by a reasonably healthy immune system. Also, when they are overcome, you actually get better.

Just goes to show, taking a homeopathic treatment often has the same effect as not doing anything at all. Colds and Flu are good examples. Even the medical treatments dont really “cure” them – things like paracetamol and phenylephedrine mostly just relive the symptoms and make it easier for your body to fight for itself. Often medicine, while making the symptoms much more manageable, will make the infection last a bit longer.

You see, homeopathy is actually snake oil designed for gullible hypochondriacs. Unfortunately, Jeanette Winterson is one of these gullible hypochondriacs.

It is also interesting that, in the best habits of homeopaths and their followers, Jeanette resorts to misusing sciencey-sounding words. “Nano” gets used a lot, even though it doesn’t mean what she thinks it means – mostly because “nano-particles” sounds cool and exciting and makes it seem like there is some actual research behind the crap.

Demonstrating a wonderful lack of scientific background, she writes:

Objections to homeopathy begin with what are viewed as the impossible dilutions of the remedies, so that only nano amounts of the original active substance remain.

Yet our recent discoveries in the world of the very small point to a whole new set of rules for the behaviour of nano-quantities. We are discovering that the properties of materials change as their size reaches the nano-scale.

In a solvent, such as water, nano particles can remain suspended, neither floating nor sinking, but permeating the solution. Such particles are also able to pass through cell walls, and they can cause biochemical change.

We do not know whether this has a bearing on homeopathic dilutions, but it may offer a clue.

Head spinning stuff. If only “nano amounts” of the “active” substance did remain, there may be some credibility in what homeopaths claims. The fact is, you can detect “nano amounts.” Nano amounts seems to imply a 1 part in 1×10^-9 dilution, homeopathic treatments are of the order of 1 part in 1×10^60 dilution. There is a huge difference (even ignoring the problem of the sign). She is trying to allude to quantum mechanics, but is doing so in a new-agey sort of manner which is, putting it mildly, nonsense. I have one message for Jeanette (on the off chance she ever reads this blog…): Stick to writing novels, if you really must voice your support for snake oil homeopathy, then please do so using your excellent command of language and literature; please do not try to talk science without learning a lot more.

Sadly, she is not alone in this range of mad ideas. In the comments, “Kate” writes:

I am a firm believer in homeopathy and have been for quite some time. Working in a medical environment, I have been an easy target for ridicule but I wish the NHS was able to include proven and well documented complementary therapies more than is available at present.

I hope she is lying about working in a medical environment (unless she is a receptionist or someone with no access to patient care). Ironically, the NHS is able to provide proven and well documentary therapies. The problem is homeopathy is proven to be crap.

Panorama and WiFi

Background: Shown on BBC, Panorama bills itself as “The Worlds Longest Running Investigative TV Show.” It has a history of “investigating” current affairs issues and is, generally, fairly watchable. Like all “Investigative” shows, it likes to hype things up and often crosses the line about what is acceptable.

Despite this almost regular massage of the truth, lots of people take everything it says as gospel. In local debates, claims made on Panorama are often repeated while people demand their local authorities to take action.

A few months ago (May) there was an example of this, when Panorama showed an investigation into the “dangers” of WiFi. As with most of these things, it was utter nonsense. A few talking head scientists were trotted out for their 15 minutes of fame on the basis that they were willing to imply WiFi signals would make you grow ears on your forehead (or something equally stupid).

Although the program was crap, it fuelled a significant amount of debate both at the national and local level. People are still demanding WiFi connections be removed from schools, electro-sensitivity gets regular mentions in the press (and in BadScience…) and so on.

So, it was somewhat pleasing today to hear that: (From BBC News)

The BBC has upheld complaints against an edition of the current affairs programme Panorama.

It is a bit more watered down than I would have liked, basically it is just admitting that Panorama were very selective in the talking heads they went for and failed to properly represent the scientific opinion.

On Friday, the ECU [Editorial Complaints Unit] said it had been “legitimate” for Panorama to examine concerns about wi-fi raised by chairman of the Health Protection Agency Sir William Stewart.

But it said the programme included only one contributor, Prof Repacholi, who disagreed with Sir William, compared with three scientists and a number of other speakers who supported him.

“This gave a misleading impression of the state of scientific opinion on the issue,” the ECU said.

“In addition, Prof Repacholi’s contribution was presented in a context which suggested to viewers that his scientific independence was in question, whereas the other scientists were presented uncritically.

So, not quite the resounding criticism I wanted, but a start.

The depressing part of this is that nothing will change and the damage has been done. Panorama has quite high viewing figures, the episode is out and available for the terminally insane to reinforce their nonsense with and, basically, an apology hidden in BBC News does nothing to reverse that. It seems the BBC has decided to respond to this upheld complaint by:

Panorama said it was now planning a meeting to explore issues of balance and fair dealing with contributors in relation to scientific and medical topics.

Blah, blah. Meaningless weasel words. Nothing will change. No one will be told off. But they will waste a few hours drinking coffee as they “explore” a concept they seem completely ignorant of. What a waste of the taxpayers money.

Mad, Mad, Mad Sudan

As if the previous farce over a teacher being jailed for 15 days and deported because she committed that most heinous of crimes – she allowed her class to name a teddy bear Mohammed – wasn’t stupid enough (Previous post and Nullifidian’s comments), we find out more today.

The BBC have reported:

Crowds of people have marched in the Sudanese capital Khartoum to call for a tougher sentence for a UK teacher jailed for insulting religion.

It is put slightly stronger on AFP:

KHARTOUM (AFP) — Thousands of angry Sudanese, some brandishing swords, marched Friday through the centre of Khartoum calling for the execution of a British woman teacher as she began a brief jail term for insulting Islam.

“Those who insult the Prophet of Islam should be punished with bullets,” a sea of white-clad demonstrators shouted after Gillian Gibbons, 54, was jailed for 15 days on charges stemming from naming a teddy bear Mohammed.

What absolute, stark-staring, raving, madness. As if the people of Sudan have nothing better to be outraged about than this trivial nonsense. More importantly, it drives home the problem of allowing religious beliefs to dominate rational thinking. The whole concept of actually shooting someone for this idiocy is truly mind boggling.

It strikes me that this is nothing but the effects of rabble rousing being carried out by those who are looking to accelerate the inevitable class between Islam and the “Christian” West. I can not for one second think that these people would really have been insensed by such nonsense without prompting – and Friday is the big prayer day… I suspect that some of the more fundie clerics have stirred their masses up and unleashed them. It is worrying that this effect is so pronounced and obvious. From AFP:

Sheikh Hussein Mubarak told thousands of faithful gathered for the Muslim day of prayer that the court’s “verdict was lenient out of fear of criticism from human rights organisations, America and the West.”

Earlier, Sheikh Mubarak railed at what he said was an attempt “to transform Sudan from an Islamic state into a Christian state,” adding that the British teacher had come to Sudan “as part of that design.”

“Why did this teacher come to Sudan? She surely didn’t need to emigrate from her country for the money? So she came for another reason…” he told the faithful at Al-Safa mosque in the city’s eastern Jarif district.

See, Hovind et al are not alone. Islam has more than its fair share of evil, lying, self serving, manipulative scum bags. AFP continues: (emphasis mine)

He [Sheikh Mubarak] denounced “those who try to defend democracy and human rights and insult the Prophet,” adding that he did not think the teacher would even serve out the 15-day sentence.

At the central Martyr’s Mosque, another imam, Sheikh Abdul Jalil Karuri, said Gibbons “did it with the intention of insulting Islam.”

The crowd responded with cries of “The army of Islam will prevail.”

Like I said yesterday, the real crime isn’t so much naming a toy Mohammed (although now I will name every inanimate object I come across after prominent Islamic figures), as it was allowing the class to participate in a democratic action. What an evil woman this teacher was…

Well it seems like we get another wonderful example from the religion of peace. All I can say is they are all mad. I am, however, a bit surprised by how tame a lot of the political / international reaction has been. I have even read US based blogs talking about how it was the teacher’s responsibility to have learned all about the culture before she went there. I found that quite ironic.

Mad Islamic Clerics

The wonders of religious belief strike again. The ongoing saga of the British teacher in Sudan has now reached its (illogical) conclusion. Islamic clerics have managed to reinforce the idea that Africa is a haven for raging nutcases. Well done to them all. I am sure their god is a lot happier now, I mean he must have been really peeved that a teddy bear could be named after him. (Typical the Judaeo-Christian deity to be so vain).

Today the BBC reported that after a speedy trial the teacher was found guilty and sentenced to 15 days then will be deported. Wonderful. I am sure Sudan is full of surplus teachers and getting rid of this obviously evil one is only a good thing. How dare she try to teach her pupils to think and participate – she should have been caning them daily and teaching them nothing but what was in the Koran….Showing what a farce this whole thing is, the BBC article talks about the previous hopes for this to all blow over:

The prime minister, Sudanese embassy officials in London and UK Muslim organisations also expressed the hope that Mrs Gibbons would be released.

So, the Sudanese embassy officials have such poor insight into the mood and will of their country’s clerics they didn’t see this happening? Remind me why they are in the embassy here?

Typically, part of the truth is revealed (do you like that play on words?) by this little quote from the BBC:

But Sudan’s top clerics had called for the full measure of the law to be used against Mrs Gibbons and labelled her actions part of a Western plot against Islam.

Once again, crazy Islamic clerics in Africa create an imaginary western plot against Islam. Brilliant isn’t it. Bloody paranoid fools. The west obviously infiltrated that school and convinced the kids to name the teddy Mohammed all as part of a great master plan…

Toutatis only knows what the goal of the master plan is though… Do we think that this sort of thing will make Islam vanish maybe? In reality, the crackpot fundie clerics are managing to generate much more ridicule of Islam than anything a single teddy could manage. Even if it was a large teddy.

Worryingly, there is a lack of condemnation for this nonsense among international Islamic groups. Most have skitted around the issue a bit and come up with some variation of how they hope it wont result in jail time. None (as far as I can see, I hope I proven wrong) have stood up and said “these Clerics are nutjobs and it is nothing to do with Islam.”

Commandments, counting and splitting hairs

First off, I have to say I am sorry. Once upon a time I had thought all those years of compulsory Religious Education at school had taught me a thing or two about religion. I think I was wrong.

Take one of the basics as an example. I was taught that Moses had carried a tablet with ten commandments which formed the basis of the annoying triumvirate of Monotheistic religions we suffer with in this day and age. Today, reading Wikipedia, I learned I may be wrong. This is from Wiki’s page on the Ten Commandments:

  1. I am the Lord thy God
  2. Thou shalt have no other gods before me
  3. Thou shalt not make for thyself an idol
  4. Thou shalt not make wrongful use of the name of thy God
  5. Remember the Sabbath and keep it holy
  6. Honor thy Father and Mother
  7. Thou shalt not murder
  8. Thou shalt not commit adultery
  9. Thou shalt not steal
  10. Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbor
  11. Thou shalt not covet thy neighbor’s house
  12. Thou shalt not covet thy neighbor’s wife

Now, I might be a bit old fashioned but I actually count 12 there… It seems most religions get round this by lumping two of them together every now and then. I suppose the “Ten Commandment” had a more authoritarian ring to it even all those years ago.

This leads to the second bit of confusion. I was brought up thinking the commandment “Thou Shalt Not Kill” was on the books and it was only today I discovered the rules were you couldn’t murder someone. Apparently only Catholics say the “not kill” bit (must have caused a few problems during the crusades). I find this odd as my school was at most a Protestant one (mostly secular) and we certainly weren’t taught the Catholic doctrine anywhere else.

Anyway it now seems killing people is fine, as long as it isn’t murder. This creates a bit of confusion though. Does God wait until a secular court has reached a verdict before he consigns the killer to hell? Who decides when taking a life is murder and when it isn’t?

Why cant these bloody religions make sense. It is all proof that the bible was written by Loki while he was bored if you ask me…

More on the Teddy Bear

The teddy bear fiasco in Sudan doesn’t look like it is going away. Null’s WTF is a good starting point, and from there the Times Online takes up some of the slack.

Writing today, Joanna Sugden notes:

Gillian Gibbons has today been charged with blasphemy, and accused of inciting hatred and insulting Islam, in Sudan for allegedly naming a class teddy bear Muhammad.

Now, I am obviously much to rational to be able to work out how naming a class teddy bear Muhammed either incites hatred or insults Islam. If she had named the bear “Islamic law is madness and anyone who follows it is a lunatic,” I could see their point, but she didn’t.

She made the mistake of allowing her class to vote on a name for the bear. Obviously this is the problem. Acts of democracy and free-thinking for children is potentially deadly for Islamic nations and they seek to stamp it out at the earliest possible stage.  Loki forbid that Sudanese law have concepts such as mens rea – who cares if she intended to do wrong, the fact of the matter is a thinly skinned religion has taken the hump over a trivial issue. Who said Islam had no sense of humour? (Well they were right)

Interestingly, and just in case the raging nutcase Christians thought they were being let off lightly today, the article on the times has this snippet:

Blasphemy is a crime on the statute book of Sudan, as it is in many countries governed by Islamic law.

My, what backward nations they are… Oh, hang on a second… Blasphemy is still a crime on the statue book of the United Kingdom and we certainly are not governed by Islamic law… (I suppose the only difference is you wont get 40 lashes in the UK…)

If you are sane enough to think this is madness please take a moment to sign the petition calling for the revocation of this nonsensical law. If you have a blog, please spread the word about this petition.

Islamic Law and Madness

The two seem inextricably linked. It isn’t very often that this blog gets to abuse Islam (mainly because it is still very much a minority religion where we live) but this week has produced two wonderful examples of who religion and rationality are still very much apart.

First off we had the breath-taking madness in which an English woman (foolishly) teaching in Sudan has been arrested because she allowed her class to name a teddy bear Mohammed (see nullifidian’s post on the matter). Despite the fact this teddy was apparently named after one of the boys in the school, this has been seen as a vile insult to Islam for which she faces either a year in a Sudanese jail or 40 lashes. What a wonderful, rational, modern-thinking religion this is.

Oddly, the radio news today had some voice clips of various officials in Sudan saying it was a minor offence and she would be released without charge “in a few hours.” As the radio presenter pointed out, she is still locked up awaiting her trial and punishment. Religion really is not a force for the good of the world.

Next, hot on the heels of the Sudanese lunatics we get Turkey. Turkey is often thought of as being a more secular Islamic nation, and indeed has lots of secular-style laws. Obviously in this day and age, it is losing credibility with the other holy book waving nutjobs and feels the need to prove it is actually just as insane as the next Islamic nation. Well done Turkey.

It seems that some one in Turkey has read the God Delusion and has been offended by it. Not being the type of person to simply stop reading, this person has complained to the state.  I am tempted to call the police on a daily basis as a result of being offended by pretty much every tabloid newspaper in the country. Sadly, unlike the backward UK, Turkey has some wonderful legislation (Article 301) and this has been enacted. I am not fully sure how the religious offence caused by the wonderful God Delusion has been equated to this part of the article:

A person who, being a Turk, explicitly insults the Republic or Turkish Grand National Assembly, shall be punishable by imprisonment of between six months to three years

It remains possible that this whole issue is a publicity stunt, so I will refrain from any real vitriol over it for a while

Publicity stunt or otherwise, it does highlight the barking madness which results from allowing religious authorities to exercise power in a secular manner. Pretty much every country I can think of has laws based on the teachings of the national religion, and while lots of these are acceptable by a secular standard there are more than a few which are insane.

While it is funny to mock religions (and nations) that we in the west think of as being a little “rural,” we have to remember that modern, 21st century, secular, Britain still has Blasphemy on its statute books.

Religion + Law = Idiocy + Madness.

Bank Fraud and Journalistic Gullibility

Generally speaking, I have a very, very low opinion of newspapers and journalists. I suspect that our supposed desire for 24 hour a day news may be to blame, but the fact is they love to create stories out of nothing, playing on our fears and our preconceptions. Also generalising, I used to think of the Times and the Guardian as being at least reasonably respectable newspapers, where at least some semblance of sensible reporting was taking place. I admit, I may have been a bit naive here.

In yesterday’s Guardian, page 6 and most of page 7 were taken up by an article titled “Do you want Lloyds or HSBC? Account details for sale online” (online version of article). This is a well timed article to play on our fears, both over the missing 25 million HMRC records and our fears about identity theft / online fraudsters emptying our accounts.

Now, I am not for one second trying to say there is no risk or that people do not have their bank accounts hacked and all their money stolen. I just suspect it is a lesser threat to the “average” person than the newspapers make out. In this article, Robert Booth begins with:

It took just 19 hours from first contact with the anonymous Russian fraudster until he collected my $240 (£116.50) payment from a local “drop”.

And then continues, sometimes in the manner of an airport spy novel, to detail how in a short period of time he has found dozens of (mostly Russian) criminal organisations who are selling bank account details for a pittance. It is scary reading. Robert Booth writes about how these “Internet Banking Fraud communities” steal accounts and circulate the details over “untraceable” internet messaging applications like ICQ. (Really, he does write this). He continues writing about his adventures:

The encounter with the anonymous Russian in an internet chatroom was one of scores like it going on at the time. In a separate private message, another vendor promised: “I will give you HSBC full info with 26k Pounds…for $500…When can you wire money?”

The whole (longish) article is like this. There are quotes from people at SOCA, security consultants and the like. All talk about how dangerous the internet is and add to this image of the “Internet bank fraud community” sitting around trading details and earning fortunes as a result:

The community has developed a high level of sophistication so that trusted parties can trade efficiently. In one posting on a forum selling card details a fraudster reports to the rest of the community on the “review” he has conducted of a new entrant to the market.

He has tested his speed of response and accuracy of information supplied and marks him out of 10 for communication, timing and product. “Total: 9/10 nice score,” he concludes and awards the status of “trial vendor”.

Many vendors offer discounts for bulk buyers and even display a replacement policy. If the account details do not work most vendors will replace the data with a different lead. SOCA, which has responsibility for fighting organised internet fraud, has set up a series of cross-border alliances to tackle the problem, but declined to comment on our findings.

Wow. Lock up your bank accounts now! This is scary stuff!

However, you can breathe a sigh of relief gentle reader because, largely, this is a case of a journalist who has fallen for a pretty basic scam. Yes, there is fraud going on here, but the victim isn’t the innocent bank account holder. A simple application of logic (counts most journalists out then) to the basic premise hints at something not being as it seems.

Imagine this, you are a techno-savvy criminal who has gone to all the trouble to acquire account details which will allow you to empty £26,000 from a strangers account. You have done this without anyone knowing or being able to trace it was you. Would you then sit on the account details until another complete stranger got in touch with you and sent you US$500?

What sane criminal is going to turn down the £26,000 (US$52,000) and take one hundredth of that instead. The risk to the cyber-crook remain, he has just given up 99% of his potential monetary gain. In fact, if anything, his risks have escalated significantly because he now has to contend with police sting operations.

It is madness to suggest that these account details are really being sold online for such pitiful sums of money. Cyber criminals who hack into bank accounts will either empty them there and then, or use them for their own ends. Selling the details on to random internet strangers is completely stupid.

Just to underscore my point, the Guardian article finishes with this bit of reassurance:

As sobering as the trade in stolen identities has become, there was a crumb of comfort last night for the Halifax account holder whose details the Russian fraudster was peddling. Twelve hours after the payment had been withdrawn from a Siberian wire office, the Guardian was still waiting for the promised bank details.

So, in reality, I suspect this is the more common type of fraud. People who want to be cyber-criminals but lack the technical knowledge to manage it are being conned by other cyber-criminals who at least have the brains to pretend to be able to do something. The best frauds work by playing on the victim’s greed and willingness to commit criminal acts – I mean if someone is conned into paying £116.50 for illegally gained bank details, who can they complain to?

More on my annoyance with the Blogroll

I was going to write this as a comment on the aside I made last night, however it seems to be a bit long winded for that (not to mention, the aside was supposed to be a bit of a quick rant! 🙂 ).

The previous post, resulted in several good comments from salient, heather and Mana which are well worth reading. Following their responses, I felt there were a couple of points I wanted to clarify – mainly to make my position on the matter clear, rather than actually disagreeing with anything they have said.

First off, my rant which started this was more the result of frustration than anything else. The blogroll is excellent and it has allowed both Heather and myself to discover some excellent, well written and entertaining blogs we would have otherwise missed. When this blog first joined it, we got two excellent advantages from membership:

  1. Every time some one on the blogroll made a post, Technorati granted a “link” (authority) to our blog if we were visible on their blogroll widget. It was this which propelled us from almost no technorati “authority” to dizzying heights (albeit short lived).
  2. Every time we made new posts, the **New next to our name drove traffic to our site. This resulted in lots of new traffic for the site, new readers, new commenters and new posts agreeing / disagreeing with our own.

Over time, Technorati removed the first advantage and now it seems Blogrolling are in the process of removing the second advantage. Over the last few days, the blogroll widget we display in the sidebar has done nothing but direct traffic away from our blog to other blogs (according to Feedburner outgoing links stats) – as we have not shown up on anyone else’s pages we have had no inbound traffic.

In reality, for the last three days now the blogroll has really been nothing but a free linking service to other atheist blogs. While I don’t really have a problem with that, it is a touch annoying that there is no reciprocation and, more importantly, we have no say (here at WhyDontYou) over which atheist blogs get linked to. As it stands, we would be better off replacing the blogrolling blogroll with a static blogroll where we chose which blogs were listed (note: at the moment, we have both).

While I am not, at the moment, thinking of removing the blogroll from here (and I wouldn’t advocate others remove it either – it is a good thing!), I do hope that someone with the requisite technical knowledge can come up with a solution to the problems. There must be a sufficiently IT literate atheist out there (or are they all on the sites which seem to always be on the blogroll!)

As further clarification, in my previous aside I was being very subjective when I complained that the good blogs seem to be missed out by the blogroll. I was, in an angry and frustrated manner, trying to complain that (often) if you visit all 25 blogs from the blogroll which should have “new” posts (i.e. are marked **New), you often find little more than a YouTube clip with no commentary or even no new posts. Yes, there are some brilliant blogs on the blogroll which I make the effort to visit as often as I remember, but there are a few that are barely readable.

In a nutshell (sorry for being longwinded about this!), the biggest thing which annoys me is the erratic nature of it all. For example, Pharyngula (an excellent blog) seems to be permanently on the blogroll (*) – which is understandable as he makes ten posts for every one a mere mortal can generate. However, WhyDontYou hasn’t been seen on it for the last three days, despite us having half a dozen new posts. I am sure there is no specific discrimination against this particular blog, I just wish I could work out how to solve it…

As a related aside, salient has an excellent post where he has looked at technorati stats for various words. Well worth checking out, and it seems to identify a global, significant, drop in blog traffic over the period 11 – 17 Nov. This is mirrors in the stats for visitors here, they plummeted around this period. Did the internet break for a few days?

(*) Comically, I have just looked and for the first time in ages, Pharyngula isn’t on the blogroll. Bah. Toutatis and Loki have conspired together to make me look silly. Hopefully he will be back before you read this… 🙂

Annoying Blogroll

Despite wordpress automatically pinging and us manually pinging Blogrolling.com as well as using Ping-O-Matic at 15 – 30 minute intervals, not one of the previous five posts have been shown on the Atheist Blogroll. Now, the blogroll is a wonderful thing and we here at WhyDontYou want to fully support it, but the fact remains it is not working properly. As it stands, blogs no longer get Technorati ranking from it which means its main purpose is to send traffic to a site. Most people use the abbreviated version showing the most recently updated blogs. As it now seems to ignore the good blogs when they update, oddly showing a **new next to all the content-free/YouTube blogs, it is becoming less and less useful. If I had the technical know-how to propose a solution, I would, but surely there must be, somewhere in AtheistLand, a person with the required knowledge to solve the problem? Anyone?

Creationists Say the Stupidest Things

Hot on the footsteps of my previous post, I have carried on looking over the latest rantings posted on FSTDT. This led me to a wonderful link to a Hovind movie on DivX.com’s Stage6. I’ve linked to it here, so you can watch the video if you want – personally I have seen enough of his cretinous nonsense to not bother.

On the FSTDT, they have taken someone called “MovieSelect” to task over part of a comment. Namely this bit of idiocy:

Why do christians like myself say evolution is a religion? This is easy at first science was thought as observing about the present so they became facts and no one could say its not true. Now people realize they didn’t only observe the present but predict the past so people find out its a religion because scientists predict the past or the future so it makes it into a theory and theory is a religion i don’t care what anybody says about that and dead bones is not evidence because they can lose form over time.

While it is funny and reasonably fundie nonsense, it was the fifth point in a stream of nonsense made by the same madman. MovieSelect opens with this headspinning reasoning:

Very informative thank you a lot to think about.
Why it proves evolution wrong is-

1. Some cells that form the baby’s hands commit suicide. In evolution theory is that cells/organisms only want to try to stay alive why then do they kill them selves? it is because the cells follow orders so then look at it this way the solider follow orders even to commit suicide for the sake of the commanders plans. So the cells follow the creators plans.

No, seriously. That is what he has written. It gives me a headache thinking about it. This is blatantly a person who has no idea what “cells” are. I suspect someone has tried to use analogy to teach him about the bodies process and he has become confused. Very confused. More importantly, it speaks of a deep misunderstanding about evolution – as is often the case with creationists. Almost a shame. Still, the strangeness continues:

2. How does the cells/organisms think for themselves if they don’t have a brain? The evolutionist theory would be they naturally follow natures law, but were did the law come from? If you create something you set rules to it that means theres a creator because before it was created there aren’t any rules because it doesn’t exist. So lets pretend evolution is right then we would not exist because theres no creator in evolution, so why do they claim there is a law?

(Why are creationists so grammatically bad? Is heather a creationist, I wonder :-)  )

This is a stream of madness if ever I saw one. First off he ask a question which has a simple answer “they dont.” However, he wants it to have a different answer, which he then goes off and critiques. It is like an uber-Strawman. From that dodgy beginning, things go really downhill.  Please let this be a parody.

Genuine madness kicks in now:

3. Is there a random chance of our existence? I say no because how can you answer this problem with out an answerer 123,473,957,430,965,743,196,749,574,590,487,595,826 + 539,476,056,790,734,635,680,953,530,579,057,035,987=? the problem doesn’t answer itself.

No, really. This is what he wrote. I couldn’t make this lunacy up. How can you answer anything without an answer? As for the basic addition problem he posted, well it is long, but it is an easy sum to add…. What sheer madness. I cant help but chuckle at how long he must have spent typing that out – you cant just mash the keys when you want to include a comma every 3 digits…

Lastly, we get:

4. Many evolutionist claim to say the world is billion years old because evolution takes a long time for it to happen so why does the baby starts from a cell to a human being in 5 months? Why is it impossible for evolution in the outside world evolve the same speed as in the mothers wound? I will tell you why because evolution is mostly incorrect with there so called factual evidence and there not facts there guesses. Of course they do have ways to sample material underground to state there age but I cant say if there right or wrong because I don’t know exactly how they sample them I do know that they compare present elements decays and relate them to old ones and state how long its been decaying but I think things decay alought faster underground then above the ground so you cant really rely on it. There must be a creator.

Babble, babble, babble. The first sentence is funny – either the crazy fool thinks evolution exists (and for some reason thinks that the development of a cell to human being is an example of it) or they don’t. Why does it take 10 hours for me to fly to the USA, when it only takes me 3 minutes to microwave a bag of popcorn would be a similar argument.

With this fourth comment, MovieSelect must have been getting really carried away. His spelling has deteriorated even more than normal, so I suspect he was typing really fast now – maybe he thought this was a crushing blow against evolution. Sadly it is just disconnected nonsense.  He finishes with an isolated cry of “there must be a creator” as if everything else he has written leads to that conclusion. Sadly…

Posts like this really do make me wonder about the mental health of a huge swathe of the world. Worryingly, when you sit there and look around, and everyone else seems to be mad maybe it means you are the mad one…

A Sad and Empty Place

Hot on the heels of the bizarre weirdness that it Kent Hovind’s “Knee-mails” to the mythical, I found a website which appears to try and parody the always entertaining Fundies Say the Darndest Things site (FSTDT). This site with the oh so funny title “Atheists Say the Weirdest Crap (ASTWC)” (very droll) is entertaining on many levels – although not, I suspect, in the manner its creator intended.

For those who haven’t visited FSTDT, have a look. It is a hilarious insight into the twisted things which rattle around inside the heads of fundamentalist theists (not just fundies either it includes a generous helping of racists and other idiots). There are hundreds of pages, each full with idiotic outpourings written by people who often have little or no understanding of the holy book they are claiming is the TRUTH.

Pitched against that, we now have the ASTWC. This has the sum total of six (count ’em) quotes. Four of them come from Richard Dawkins. There appears to be a forum with some posts (and a section titled: “Politics No liberals allowed”) but every time I try to view them, my connection times out. Obviously the internet has some level of taste after all. Because ASTWC is so, frankly, small, I am more than willing to fisk the whole “quotes” page. What is really funny is not the atheistic quotes he tries to ridicule, but how the site owner tries to ridicule them. It will have you laughing for minutes.

In the hate section, titled “The obvious silliness from Richard Dawkins” we get:

“I am against religion because it teaches us to be satisfied with not understanding the world.” [It actually teaches us the opposite of that, as anyone with working synapses can explain]

Blimey. Pure, 100% school ground retort. No evidence or proof of his claims, so he resorts to an assertion and an ad hominem. Brilliant way of supporting an argument. If you are under 10 years old.

“What has ‘theology’ ever said that is of the smallest use to anybody? When has ‘theology’ ever said anything that is demonstrably true and is not obvious? What makes you think that ‘theology’ is a subject at all?” [The Word of God, the story of the crucifixion, and the fact that it is.]

Straight from the department of not understanding the quote you are arguing against. The “Word of God” is meaningless and could easily be argued as already falsified by biblical inconsistencies, transcription errors and the need for human interpretation. The story of the crucifixion falls squarely in the not of the smallest use to anybody and “the fact that it is” is childish nonsense. I am now reasonably sure that ASTWC is written by a 9 year old.

“Personally, I rather look forward to a computer program winning the world chess championship. Humanity needs a lesson in humility.” [Included for the sheer hypocrisy.]

Pointless. What is hypocritical about it?

“I’m not sure this conversation can go any further.” [Rallying cry of the defeated atheist.]

A return to the school playground. Theists use this just as much. Anyway, that is pretty much the limit of the “weird crap” he (or she, but I think he) can accuse Dawkins of saying. Interesting considering how much Dawkins has said, but we now move on to the attack on FSTDT. This produces the longest bit of continual writing on the site:

FSTDT is one of the most truly disturbing websites I have ever seen on the internet. Please don’t visit unless you want to be mocked, ridiculed, and persecuted just because you are a moral person with faith.

“Guess we’re more popular than jesus” – malicious_bloke [Guess you don’t remember what happened to the last guy that said that. Or that Jesus is capitalized. I imagine there is a great deal that you don’t remember, or else never knew in the first place.]

I suspect that the ASTWC author really doesn’t get FSTDT. I am a bit confused here though. What did happen to the last guy who said he was more popular than Jesus? I know loads of people who have said it in the last (say) six years and I can’t think of anything particularly bad which happened to any of them. What is he talking about here? As for the capitalisation bite, well that is just lame. We could allow this to descend into a long argument about internet vs Internet, but that would be equally lame. Suffice it to say, if his strongest argument is the lack of a J at the start of Jeebus’ name he has no argument at all.

Finally, the ASTWC idiocy ends with this priceless gem:

“I contend that we are both atheists. I just believe in one fewer god than you do. When you understand why you dismiss all the other possible gods, you will understand why I dismiss yours.” – Steven Roberts [Nice cop-out, there Steve. Unfortunately, comparing the God of Abraham to, say, Shiva, is comparing apples to false gods. So you’re not excused.]

Wow. I am going to chortle about this all day. I was going to write a bit more about this, but I have just discovered that FSTDT has already picked up on this line of nonsense, so I will leave it to them to pull this to shreds. The idiocy in the statement is amazing – sadly it also speaks of someone who will never actually understand why they are an idiot.

Painfully Weird

Mooching around the internet today allowed me to stumble upon a site I’ve visited in the past but largely had forgotten about – despite the fact it reaches a new level of bizarreness. The site is CSE Blogs, for those of you who (like me) wondered what CSE stood for, it isn’t “Combined Services Entertainment” or even the “Centre for Sustainable Energy.” No, it stands for the complete headcase Creation Science Evangelism promoted by “dr” Tax-Dodger Hovind. Surely some one can sue the creation “science” nuts over the use of CSE?

Anyway, as I said, this is a painfully weird site. The posts seem to be made by a lackey of Hovind called “pabramson” (which seems to be missing a “h” in my mind but …) and are largely examples of weird imagined conversations between Hovind and various mythical figures. When I say weird, I don’t mean in the nice, funny sort of way. While the larger part of me assumes that Hovind and his lackeys all know it is a load of crap, there is a little bit which is screaming that the gullible rubes visiting the site and leaving gushing comments (example follows) actually believe the nonsense. Now that is scary.

Thank you Brother Kent, and Brother Paul, Brother Eric, and everyone else at CSE. I needed this today! I have my own ministry and I speak about Creation, evolution, and share the salvation plan with everyone who will listen, and I have never been backed down or proven wrong. (from Micheal Deas)

Great isn’t it. I suspect the reason he has never “been backed down or proven wrong” is mostly down to the fact he preaches to other idiots.

The main thing I find weird about this site, is the sheer volume of Knee-Mail posts. First off, the play on words is one which would embarrass a mildly educated ten year old after a while (which could explain why these lunatics nice people are still getting kicks from it) but each and every one seems to think it is a brand new and funny way to open a “sermon.” That, in effect, is all the posts are – a sad attempt by a criminal to try and preach to the public over the internet in the style of some one in an electronic conversation with a mythical figure.

Take the latest one, the one I came across first, which presents itself as a conversation between “Kent and the Captain.” This is how it begins (note the attempt to recreate an e-mail header at the start, how funny…)

From: Kent Hovind
Sent: August 17, 2007
To: Captain of Ship to Italy with Passenger, the Apostle Paul
Subject: Re: Discussions on the Wisdom of Sailing Against the Advice of the Prisoner Paul and the “Preserved Word” from which He Preaches
(Read Acts 27:6-44)

KH: Hey Captain! I hate to bother you at this busy time, but can you talk for a minute (between verses 11 and 12)?

Captain: Sure, knee-mail suspends time; so it won’t effect me at all.

KH: I understand that you own the ship that is headed to Italy.

Like I said, it is weird but I will try to identify all the things which I think are odd – please feel free to correct me if you think I am missing the point…

First off, it was posted on 19 Nov 07. Why does the faux-header say 17 August? Is that when Kent sent the message out of prison? Does “knee-mail” suspend time but take three months to get anywhere? More importantly, why is the Captain of the ship carrying the supposed Apostle Paul getting a message in 2007? Are creationists unable to maintain a coherent line of fantasy? (Oh, yeah, scratch that one…)

I am bit thrown by the reference to “between verses 11 and 12,” when Kent then goes on to make references to verses after Acts 27:12. Having said that, Acts is a bit of a mixmash anyway – trying to read the verses in chronological (or any logical) order is like hammering a nail into granite with your forehead. For example look at the flow between Acts 27:34 – 38: (this is after they had apparently been starving for 14 days)

34: Wherefore I pray you to take some meat: for this is for your health: for there shall not an hair fall from the head of any of you.
35: And when he had thus spoken, he took bread, and gave thanks to God in presence of them all: and when he had broken it, he began to eat.
36: Then were they all of good cheer, and they also took some meat.
37: And we were in all in the ship two hundred threescore and sixteen souls.
38: And when they had eaten enough, they lightened the ship, and cast out the wheat into the sea. (source Biblos.com, KJ version)

That is one of the more readable sections, yet it still manages to insert a seemingly out of place head count and have some drivel about baldness. (Also, as they are starving, not having eaten for 14 days Acts 27:33, why did they throw their wheat into the sea – in fact, as they obviously had bread, meat and wheat, why had they starved themselves for 14 days!)

From this bit of biblical madness it becomes a touch easier to see where Hovind gets his writing style from. The thing I can’t understand is why is he being allowed to carry on doing this? Surely there are some regulations on what inmates can and can’t do with regards to contact with the outside world?

Great irony can be found in the comments, especially where Paul Abramson is talking about people writing to Kent in jail (to lift his spirits etc) and he writes:

Do not put “Dr.” on his name, or it may get thrown away by the guards, unfortunately.

Oh, how that made me giggle.

Less funny, although giving a better insight into the minds of the creationist, is the reaction to Dermot’s comment. Basically Dermot writes creationism is not scientific, so Paul Abramson cuts him off (yet doesn’t delete the post, just slices it) to say they are not going to talk about creationism, then talks about creationism. Weird but true.

I like this bit in particular:

For a *believer* then creation is non-negotiable. Either the Bible is true (including Exodus 20:11) or it is not true. Either God is strong or weak. One cannot have both. That is what makes this non-negotiable – for believers.

The God of the Bible is strong. The god of evolution is weak and bumbling or is non-existent. It is incoherent to try to mix evolution with Christianity, I would contend.

Great, isn’t it. Just like six year olds in a play ground arguing whose father is the toughest. I am starting to get an idea of the mental age of these creationists…

Edit to add: Seriously, if this was anyone else, or if it wasn’t supposed to be a hommage to the great sky pixie, people would have put Kent in a padded cell and be force feeding him all manner of chemicals. The man is either a callous con artist or criminally insane. You chose which.

Creationist Idiots Get Everywhere

Well, I am back from my holidays now, suitably depressed at having to return to work in a cold, wet and miserable climate. It seems that while this blog was on hiatus, the lunatics and idiots were out in full force. A few weeks ago, Rob Crilly wrote a post on the Times Online Comment section titled “Church Row Evolves Over Fossil Boy.” In a nutshell, this post can be summarised as follows:

Turkana Boy, considered the most complete early human fossil, is being removed from his bomb-proof vault to take centre stage at an exhibition that curators say will provide the most complete record of the evolution of Man.

However, the collection, to be show-cased for the first time at the Nairobi National Museum after a £5 million renovation financed by the European Union, has drawn sharp criticism from evangelical Christians who deny the theory of evolution.

It is an interesting post, but as always the real insight into the nonsense which bounces around inside what ever some theists (note: not all…) use instead of brains comes in the comments. It would have made me happier if I could claim that the real off the wall comments were from Americans, but sadly this is not always the case. Take this wonderful bit of ignorance:

Any scientist who believes that evolution is the only explanation for the origins of life is more worried about his career prospects than actually conveying the truth about what is known about origins and the diversity of life.

Darwinian Evolution has minimal evidence, is statistically improbable, and because it inolves historical events is unproveable. Or as one NON Christian scientist described it a preposterous hypothesis.

Why do scientists who know the failings of the hypothesis continue to try and prevent any argument against it or stifle anyone who questions its validity?

Simply because it has become a tenet of faith for scientists which is being increasingly forced on the world and children in particular.

Everything we know about genetics tells us that Darwinian evolution is impossible so why persist in pretending it is possible let alone the only plausible explanation.
Martin, Isle of Skye

Obviously Martin has been living with his head buried to ensure no education has been allowed to seep past his ears since 1840. It constantly amazes me how people can try to sound off as if they know what they are talking about, then make phrases like “Darwinian Evolution has minimal evidence.” Even “Darwinian Evolution” is enough to show the person is an idiot. Shamefully, Martin has made lots of comments including “I did A Level Biology” at the same time as showing he failed to understand a single thing he was taught. Priceless.

Fortunately, the USA stages a comeback:

What the article is saying isn’t that these Kenyans are protesting the Theory of Darwinism/Accidental Evolution, but rather that this theory is presented as FACT or LAW. This puts a very different spin on the presentation, and you can not prove evolution. Primarily due to the lack of intermediate species to be found in today’s world or in the fossil record.

Having read quite a bit on history, I believe the Bible’s seven days mean seven ages. The specifics are not listed, nor need they be. The beginning of each age involves an explosion of life, and these can be traced in the fossil records. Every kind of fruit, tree, and animal creates more of the same, not completely different animals.
Steven, Danville, CA

Here we get the tired, repetitive issue of an idiot who doesn’t understand what a “theory” is (in the scientific sense at least). Thanks to uncountable numbers of self serving creationists trying to muddy the waters, people seem to think a scientific theory is something useless – obviously the Theory of Gravity, Quantum Theory, Theory of Relativity (and so on) are all equally false and should not be presented as “FACT or LAW.” More importantly, I cant for one second believe Steven has really read “quite a bit on history.” It strikes me as intellectually dishonest to have to re-invent choice parts of the “holy book” to keep it valid, but then that is just me.

Keeping to the creationist playbook we get:

Careful study of the bible shows that adam and eve were not mere allegorical characters. Jewish people kept accurate records of lineage in the temple and could trace their family trees back to Adam and Eve. It was one way the messiah could be authenticated and with the destruction of the temple in 70 CE no one else could claim to be Christ. When you extrapolate the time line of the bible it shows we came from adam and eve 6000 years ago. These so-called christians who believe otherwise are just that; so-called, not real, false christians.

As for spontaneous generation and evolution here’s how it sounds to me. I see a house. I notice that no matter how complex this house seems it is still countless times less complex than the simplest living organisms. You would have me believe that someone designed and built this house. I calculate the odds and come to the conclusion that if man spontaneously generated it is millions of times more likely that the house also did. Joey George, Mason City, IA

The wonderful argument from complexity. Great huh? Best part about it, is that it needs no education or understanding… “Careful study of the bible” is enough to falsify anything this nutter says.

Next we get the frothing theist, waiting for the rapture:

I’m reading all the comments and insults in this forum and I simply say the day is coming, who ever cares to believe it or not, that Jesus is returning to get the true believers who showed faith and endured hardships and yet still know in their heart, mind and soul that there shall be no more suffering for his namesake. As God created us, he gave us Free Will. He started with Adam & Eve and they disobeyed him just like man is doing today. God’s laws are basic So continue to waste your time and energy about the evolution of man because it does not matter. I’m just a grain of sand on a beach Christian woman who have that faith. I’m secure in Christ. Don’t be left behind. Syl, Ossining, USA/New York

Amazing. If heaven is going to be filled with people like this, I am happy I will stay here on Earth. Continuing the sense of nonsense we get:

Evolution is a false theory because its just a fairy tale for grown ups they tell you that a frog can turn into a prince but is not true that is impossible. The same applied to apes turning into humans.

Most of the articles I read these days about science only support the evolution theory and is very bias. The news today don’t show the other side and let creationist scientists defend creation, don’t be suprised there are hundreds of scientists in this world who support creation please let them speak also not just the evolution scientists don’t be bias thank you.

In conclusion based on the evidence that the creation scientists have presented to me I don’t believe in evolution theory I believe more in a intelligent designer. Also evolution and creation are incompatible with each other because both cannot be true so don’t try to put them together the bible don’t mention anything about evolution so don’t try to make evolution part of the christian faith.

knowledge is power. OldLiesForTheNewWorld, Providence, RI

Trying to follow this nonsense is painful. What is it with creationist/theists and appalling grammar/spelling? It is funny that this “person” concludes their opinion on Evolution is based on the evidence presented by creation scientists. It seems the fact the bible doesn’t mention evolution is the most damming evidence. How, I wonder, does OldLiesForTheNewWorld access the internet when I am fairly sure it isn’t in the bible…

The department of blind ignorance brings us this (actually, several comments allude to the same line of nonsense as this one) nugget:

The “faith” of evolutionists is greater than the faith of many Christians. Anyone who can believe that nothing plus nothing equals everything is truly an amazing person. An all-knowing, all-powerful intelligence is evident everywhere. Open your eyes and you will see. Open your hearts and you will know. Jim Thomas, Panama City, Florida

It confounds me that people can argue such a self defeating proposition. It seems that some people, however, can go a stage further:

So now evolutionists are saying gravity is just a theory! Where’s the logic? Without it everything not tied down would just float off into the atmosphere. Who determines what intelligence is but a group of scientists arguing with those who they think are less smarter than themselves. By saying that half the human race is below average intelligence is their way of reasoning that man evolved from apes! If half of the population were given the chance to increase their learning skills they would know a lot more. marilyn carrier, troy, mi

Argh! The stupidity burns! It is not evolutionists who say gravity is “just a theory.” “Science” says gravity is a theory. Creationists and IDers say theories are “Just a theory.” Argh. More madness from Florida:

There are some really ignorant comments being made. Evilutionists attacking for the sake of attacking. If evolution was held up to the same standard as creationism, it would fall flat on ts face. To use science’s own rules “if you can’t physically seit happen, then what you have is theory and conjecture.” Volution cannot be proven unless one stands around “for millions of years and documents it”. So its a theory. Theory. Get over it. vic, Palm Harbor, FL

What! I like the (un)original use of “Evilutionists” though. It made me giggle for all of a second. How clever Vic is. Evolution is held up to the same standard as creationism. That is why ID/Creationism is ridiculed…

More American brand madness comes with this bit of blinding nonsense:

Evolution is a theory. Period. The “science” behind it is really pseudoscience. If evolution were fact, there would be an abundance of fossils in transitional form found. There are none. Also, no living creatures today are in transitional form. Dogs are dogs, birds are birds, men are men, etc. There may be variations but, they are within their species. Also, the fact that bacteria become more resistant to antibiotics does not prove evolution, either. They are still bacteria. Vic, Moreno Valley, Ca

Again, the idiocy makes my head hurt. The “Dogs are dogs…” bit is amazing. Obviously there is only one type of dog, not different ones which are adapted to different climates, let alone the “transitional” types of animal where you get marsuipial lions for example. It really makes you want to cry.

I will finish my laugh at the madness with two comments. Both of which are funny enough to not need any further ridicule: (emphasis mine, minor ridicule…)

The theory of the conservation of matter states that matter can neither be created nor destroyed. And the theory of the conservation of engery states basically the same thing about energy. We have the big bang theory etc… which was caused by an energy. Think about it folks. Science proves religion. If the big bang created everything wouldn’t that go against the conservation laws? that only pushes one closer to the fact that God exists and I’m not ignorant; I’m a biology major and I took an evolution class. Look at the bible and the ENTIRE theory of evolution…they complement each other and remember the earth was created in 7 GOD DAYS (1000 years to us is like a second to him) thus, those million of years that scientists say major geological/biological events occurred have occurred in God days. I think that both sides need to research the other before they open their mouths and I just want to say that you tell Christians to have open minds same to you and I pray for you. Becca, Tobyhanna

What makes everyone think that the crowning glory of evolution is the ability to manipulate one’s environment or absorb vast amounts of knowledge. We have done these things, and to what end? We still cannibalize our own species, sickness, disease, war, famine, crime, perversion is higher than ever before. Young men and women are hopeless, dying and killing in our inner cities, or turning to more exotic drugs to numb their emptiness. Marraiges and relationships are failing. People are indeed growing older, in a society that is not able to care for them. And everything that is born, dies. Everything that is fresh, becomes stale. Everything that is clean, becomes dirty. The snow falls as white, and turns to gray. Evolution is a myth in a world where everything proceeds to maximum entropy….by our own scientific observation. The world has been contaminated by men who thought they knew more than God. And only God, will return one day to fix his creation and the mess that we made of it. Mark Cognata, Medford, USA,Massachusetts

Wonderful isn’t it.

As an aside, while I was on holiday, I went to Seaworld where I overheard a conversation in the penguin enclosure. A little boy was asking his parents why God had made Puffins and Penguins rather than just one or the other. Sadly, I never heard the reply….
