Blag blogs

Phew. I can regain the will to live.

The post on atheist humour about a fake right wing blog, plus a comment by Alun about another absolutely brilliant parody site landoverbaptist.org had me wondering how many more of these other extremist blogs were fake.

I somehow ended up browsing an anti-church forum by following links from landoverbaptist. I noticed that some of the sites that people were griping about really had to be blatant spoofs.

I suddenly had a flash of Road to Damascus insight.

There are no right wing fundamentalist blogs or websites. There are no real creationist blogs. Intelligent design is just a joke that got out of hand. They are all just made by just a load of people with wierd senses of humour. This knowledge will restore your faith in the human race.

No wait! The most obvious intuitive argument against ID was the all-too-evident lack of intelligence in so many human beings – as shown ironically by the way that a completely irrational alternative to evolution was allegedly believed by huge swathes of people.

But, now science – in the shape of my empirical investigation of the existence of fundamentalist blogs – has proved that human stupidity is a false premise. Humans are rational intelligent beings after all.

D’oh, so there COULD be an intelligent design behind the universe….. 🙂

Gmail now widely available

Pointless but confusing news item – Google has now made its gmail/googlemail services open to anyone. Previously you had to have an invitation from someone who had a gmail account.(One implication could be that spammers start using gmail more.)

This is just here because, as far as I’m concerned, it’s a wierd “news” item, as I thought they had opened up gmail to anyone shortly after it was set up.

Gmail is quite good. It’s probably useful if you want an extra account to sign up for things without getting your real email buried in an avalanche of incomprehensible spam. You just have to remember the user name and password, (which is why that anti-spam tactic always works poorly for me.)

Googlemail offers a huge amount of storage space. The user interface is a bit jerky and unpredictable but that’s a feature of all webmail. It also lets you use Google talk, which is a lot like MSN Messenger in terms of its facilities – voice and so on. Last time i used it – which is about a year ago -Google talk lacked some of the Messenger additions – not necessarily a bad thing, IMHO in that it didn’t stick ads in your face, Nor did it give emoticons, unlike Messenger which offers loads, ranging from the unspeakably vile to the generally useful. These aspects may have changed. Now I think about it, maybe I’ll give it another try.

When it was first announced, Google talk was supposed to be about to offer free calls to phones. Hmm. I suspect that never took off, but it would be worth me investigating.

More on the Weather

Old Sarum 1 - 25 Nov 06 - ThumbnailA while ago I posted about how “uncommonly warm” the weather was for February. This got me thinking about the recent weather in general, and it seems fairly safe for me to say that despite the one or two days where it was cold enough to snow it has been very warm this winter.

As some more examples, this is a picture taken at Old Sarum on 25 Nov 06. Although you cant see how warm it is, trust me it was warm – and English Heritage sites such as this are not known for their nice climate…

Normally, when you visit an English Heritage site which dates back to the iron age it is like taking a holiday in a fridge. Only windier and colder.

Old Sarum Picture 2 - ThumbnailThis year, it has been very different. The weather has been nice all winter, the skys have been clear and while there has been a fair bit of rain, it has not been anything major. The sun, on the other hand, has been brilliant.

Now I am not going to make the same mistake as last time, so I wont joke about the “joy” of Global Warming, but having such a nice, warm winter has been…. fun…

Compuskills Site Redesign

I dont know if you have had the chance to read the Compuskills Web Design Blog recently, but as mentioned there we have been working on a fairly large overhaul on the Compuskills site. Most of the work has been to convert the previous pages into a database served CMS, with only minor cosmetic changes.

Everything has gone well, the new site should be live tonight and we can get back to the business of ranting and raving here again 🙂
