More on my annoyance with the Blogroll

I was going to write this as a comment on the aside I made last night, however it seems to be a bit long winded for that (not to mention, the aside was supposed to be a bit of a quick rant! πŸ™‚ ).

The previous post, resulted in several good comments from salient, heather and Mana which are well worth reading. Following their responses, I felt there were a couple of points I wanted to clarify – mainly to make my position on the matter clear, rather than actually disagreeing with anything they have said.

First off, my rant which started this was more the result of frustration than anything else. The blogroll is excellent and it has allowed both Heather and myself to discover some excellent, well written and entertaining blogs we would have otherwise missed. When this blog first joined it, we got two excellent advantages from membership:

  1. Every time some one on the blogroll made a post, Technorati granted a “link” (authority) to our blog if we were visible on their blogroll widget. It was this which propelled us from almost no technorati “authority” to dizzying heights (albeit short lived).
  2. Every time we made new posts, the **New next to our name drove traffic to our site. This resulted in lots of new traffic for the site, new readers, new commenters and new posts agreeing / disagreeing with our own.

Over time, Technorati removed the first advantage and now it seems Blogrolling are in the process of removing the second advantage. Over the last few days, the blogroll widget we display in the sidebar has done nothing but direct traffic away from our blog to other blogs (according to Feedburner outgoing links stats) – as we have not shown up on anyone else’s pages we have had no inbound traffic.

In reality, for the last three days now the blogroll has really been nothing but a free linking service to other atheist blogs. While I don’t really have a problem with that, it is a touch annoying that there is no reciprocation and, more importantly, we have no say (here at WhyDontYou) over which atheist blogs get linked to. As it stands, we would be better off replacing the blogrolling blogroll with a static blogroll where we chose which blogs were listed (note: at the moment, we have both).

While I am not, at the moment, thinking of removing the blogroll from here (and I wouldn’t advocate others remove it either – it is a good thing!), I do hope that someone with the requisite technical knowledge can come up with a solution to the problems. There must be a sufficiently IT literate atheist out there (or are they all on the sites which seem to always be on the blogroll!)

As further clarification, in my previous aside I was being very subjective when I complained that the good blogs seem to be missed out by the blogroll. I was, in an angry and frustrated manner, trying to complain that (often) if you visit all 25 blogs from the blogroll which should have “new” posts (i.e. are marked **New), you often find little more than a YouTube clip with no commentary or even no new posts. Yes, there are some brilliant blogs on the blogroll which I make the effort to visit as often as I remember, but there are a few that are barely readable.

In a nutshell (sorry for being longwinded about this!), the biggest thing which annoys me is the erratic nature of it all. For example, Pharyngula (an excellent blog) seems to be permanently on the blogroll (*) – which is understandable as he makes ten posts for every one a mere mortal can generate. However, WhyDontYou hasn’t been seen on it for the last three days, despite us having half a dozen new posts. I am sure there is no specific discrimination against this particular blog, I just wish I could work out how to solve it…

As a related aside, salient has an excellent post where he has looked at technorati stats for various words. Well worth checking out, and it seems to identify a global, significant, drop in blog traffic over the period 11 – 17 Nov. This is mirrors in the stats for visitors here, they plummeted around this period. Did the internet break for a few days?

(*) Comically, I have just looked and for the first time in ages, Pharyngula isn’t on the blogroll. Bah. Toutatis and Loki have conspired together to make me look silly. Hopefully he will be back before you read this… πŸ™‚

7 worst blog scraper tricks

Hah, I lied. I was using one of the top x ways to get people to look at a post.

(There must be lots of people who think – “Ah, 5 secrets of reaching new customers? That’s an interesting number. Not too many for my poor little brain to take in. But big enough to have some meaningful content. And, secrets? Oooh, I love secrets! I love them so much that I will suspend the inner voice that is screaming out that, by definition, it can’t be a SECRET if it’s on the Internet.” Well, SEO experts seem to assume there are lots of these people. :-D)

In fact, there’s only one evil trick that I’m going to bitch about here.

Blog comment spam goes with the blog commenting territory. Akismet is pretty good at stopping most of it, at a cost of losing a few real comments. Otherwise, if we are too stupid to see the difference between a real person and an advert for some spurious Internet products embedded with links to online pharmaceutical sales, we don’t deserve to stop them. Maybe its some sort of Turing test game spammers are playing, examining our capacity to tell whether we are interacting with a human or machine .

Standard comment spam now half-heartedly tries to convince you it’s from a human by saying things like “I loved reading about Whydontyoublog though I can’t say I understand all of it” (I stupidly deleted a good few of these, just before I decided to write this, so no direct quotes. My bad.) Obviously, if you hadn’t seen the same words in a few dozen spams, and if the “insert blog name here” bit made sense – unlike in our examples – you might let this through.

Other ones are from scrapers. I really don’t care if scrapers take our text and present it in sometimes comically inappropriate situations.

The ones for “jokes” scrapers used to be entertaining in themselves. The blog would have a righteous rant about something and say something like “They must be joking” talking about Uncommon Descent or some such unfunny creationist nonsense. A Jokes scraper would spot the “joking” keyword and put the post on its Jokes sites. If there was anyone reading them who expected a punchline to these posts, they must still be waiting.

Indeed, we would sometimes deliberately used the J word just to see how unfunny an atheist rant had to be to avoid getting scraped. We never found a limit. The jokes scrapers just seem to have withered away.

However, these scrapers couldn’t do us any discernible harm. A few sites with no real content seemed just a waste of somebody else’s Internet bandwidth.

But their next-gen offspring really annoy me. These do the same thing but with a subtle difference. They attribute the post they’ve taken and stuck on their blog to somebody else. These sites say things like “romanianbride wrote an interesting post today” and follow it with a post from my/your blog.

You blink in disbelief a few times. You think “Wow, what an amazing coincidence, romanianbride also had an argument about atheism with her son Xavier’s teacher today and met her fundy neighbour Mr Roberts in the supermarket and had to have her cat CuddlySnowballIII dewormed. And she’s written about it in the exact same words as I did!” (Well, assuming that’s your blog content…)

I started out thinking this doesn’t matter, given that it’s not as if we want our noms de blog used anyway and that it’s unlikely that anyone would visit these scrapers except by mistake.

But it does matter a bit. It matters in terms of Google rank for a start. One of the things search engine spiders look for is “uniqueness of content.” If your blog has the same content as half a dozen scrapers – at least some of which will be phishing traps and/or pathways to online sales of probably fake pharmaceuticals, casinos or pr0n – how are the search engine spiders and spam detecting algorithms supposed to know that your site is legit? Your blog starts to look like just another scraper site. In fact, it doesn’t matter if Akismet bins the spam that announces this to you. It’s already damaged your reputation. Giving them the spurious “authority” of a link from your comments, if you use “follow”, is not going to hurt you any more.

Looking for some subtle way to strike back, I first thought of posting the IPs of every one of them here. Bah, way too naive a solution. I followed up some of these IPs using a map lookup IP program. They were pretty clearly spoofed or wireless drive-by linkages. Unless, that is, there really are people, universities and companies so dumb that they steal and misattribute other people’s content, but still operate their legitimate blogs and websites from those addresses. Not likely is it? So, I won’t post the IPs of these people, who are most likely to be victims themselves.

That being my first thought, I don’t have a second. I will try to find a suitable response though, in my quarter-skilled way and post it here if I ever come up with any reasonable suggestions.
If anyone else knows a solution, please let us know.

Food fight between Europe and USA

It seems the World Trade Organisation is drawing back a bit from using its financial muscle against the EU over GM food**, according to an International Herald Tribune story.

.. the World Trade Organization said Thursday that the European Union would be given more time to end blockages on imports of engineered foods like corn.
“The period during which the EU was meant to have worked this out expired, and the parties decided to extend the deadline to Jan. 11,” said Keith Rockwell, a spokesman for the WTO.
The EU had been due to end the blockages by Nov. 21……
Argentina, Canada and the United States have sued the European Union at the WTO, which ruled last year that a de facto EU ban on imports of genetically modified foods between 1984 and 2004 was illegal.

This is quite a complicated, not to mention dull, story that I can’t really summarise without losing focus on the facts, but, basically, some EU countries and politicians object to having to open their markets to GM products on ecological grounds.

This has involved some heavy international pressure for “free trade” being brought to bear on the EU. From the BBC, in 2006, after the EU had even folded and allowed US sweetcorn in.

Two years ago the moratorium was lifted and a modified strain of sweet corn, grown mainly in the US, was allowed onto the market.
But Washington continued with the WTO case because it wanted to be sure approvals for GMO sales were being decided on scientific rather than political grounds.

Well, that sounds like a laudable aim, doesn’t it? Deciding issues on scientific rather than political grounds? Who could argue with that? Hmm. So the decision to push GM foods onto countries that really really don’t want them could not possibly be politically motivated then….. The wide antagonism to GM foods in Europe is “political” while the desire of big agribiz to sell seeds and crops is merely scientific.

In a reply to my comment on his blog, the Exterminator said:

heather, you said “In the UK, where atheism is more or less the default state “…
I don’t think you have any idea how envious that makes some of us feel.

Well, really, Exterminator, everyone in the UK, (nah in Europe, well, in the rest of the world really) is constantly jealous of America. You might have to face a fair bit more Christian lunacy but the lives of individual Americans are generally much better than ours. (Ignore the political leadership for a minute. I am talking about everyday living here)

The US has a widespread incomprehension of potential ecological crisis, a subject which occupies the minds of us Europeans a lot. (The conceptual average American, not anyone in particular.) While we in Europe are sorting through our garbage like starving raccoons* – washing out pickle jars and carefully separating soft cardboard from thick paper – you are living as if the world ‘s resources are infinite, maybe because you assume you have enough power to take what you need from the rest of the world when anything does run out.

Your cars are enormous by European standards. Even some of your ghettoes have detached houses with gardens. Your petrol is laughably cheap, even when you are facing a huge fuel price increase. FFS, you don’t even have to flush your own toilets. You have public restrooms where a sensor marks when you’ve lifted your butts off the pan and flushes the lavatory with more suction than the average vacuum cleaner. We’d all like to live like that.

The only problem is that your food is often shit. And I’m an English person speaking. The English have traditionally been associated with the worst food in Europe. Cheap food in the UK is usually rubbish. UK food makes even such European oddities like the Dutch willingness to put chocolate hundreds-and-thousands (sprinkles) on bread seem moderately tasteful. But, even we don’t have products like the clearly ironically named “cheese” in an aerosol can.

So, “protectionism” aside, Europeans generally don’t trust either your food or your commitment to the environment. Hence, we tend to pressurise our politicians to keep out GM food. My question here is whether Americans don’t also pressurise your politicians to make sure you can carry on driving huge vehicles, using infinite amounts of domestic power and finding magical “food” and household products available in supermarkets that feel as big as small European states?

Scientifically, it seems a mite doomed, unless the overwhelming majority of the world’s climate and ecosystem scientists are somehow mistaken. But, politically, maintaining the benefits of your way of life is a real imperative. So, how likely are we to see Washington pushing to make sure that any other major environmental issues are

being decided on scientific rather than political grounds?

*To quote the Simpsons – and, yes, even your best bloody television is infinitely classier than ours.
** How does anyone square the very existence of GM products with a creationist refusal to accept the evolutionary science behind genetics, by the way?

In your face, McCarthy

I am usually grateful to commenters who correct obvious errors of fact here, but there was a “correction” from a Catholic called McCarthy, on a post of mine (on the Pope honouring Spanish Civil War clergy* ) a while back, that I took to be anything but correct. So it’s sweet to find the top Spanish Catholic Bishop basically saying what I said.

To quote the Times:

SpainÒ€ℒs most senior bishop has issued an unprecedented apology for the Roman Catholic ChurchÒ€ℒs role in the Spanish Civil War.
Until now the Church has always highlighted its role as a victim in the 1936-39 war, which ended in victory for Francisco FrancoÒ€ℒs troops and marked the start of a fascist dictatorship that lasted until his death in 1975.
Last month Pope Benedict XVI beatified nearly 500 Spanish priests and nuns who were killed in the years before and during the conflict.
Yesterday, however, the head of SpainÒ€ℒs Episcopal Conference said that the Church must also seek forgiveness for Ò€œconcrete actsÒ€ during the strife-torn period.

Respect is due to the Bishop for making an apology. Even more so, when there are still living human beings who were affected by the circumstances and who can hear it, in contradiction of current fashions for apologising for centuries old wrongs.

McCarthyism UK is a pretty dire affair. The current lead post is about how fathers can’t bring up babies properly and the one before worries about what will happen to unbaptised aborted foetuses. And so on.

Mr McCarthy’s blog profile sums himself up as being “For Church, Crown and currency!”

Hmm, an odd combination, albeit alliterative. If he’s historian enough to believe the Spanish church was unconnected with Franco, then he probably wasn’t aware that the British Crown is very specifically C of E. A British monarch isn’t even allowed to marry a Catholic, or wasn’t until recently, (hastily covering my back against any more expert pedants out there.) And currency? Does that mean any currency? Does the Yankee dollar count? Does the Euro count? Does the currency-I’ve-just-made-up of some-place_I’ve-just-made-up because I CBA looking through Wikipedia count? Is he for them all? Does it mean he wants loads of currency?

* A correction of my Rwanda mis-spelling would have been welcome, for example.

Both these items are from Libby Purves in the Times (what an unfortunate surname) many of whose posts have been entertaining recently.

(I will pass gracefully over the slur to “guardinistas” in her recent post on a guardian blog about religion and how us atheists shouldn’t upset the bloggers Irish Catholic family with our strident atheism.. πŸ™‚ Most of the comments she saw as ranting from enraged guardianistas seemed at least perfectly rational to me – whether I agreed with the commenter or not. Which is in itself a novelty, given the mad ranting that so often pops up on CIF)

First, the lasermonks who sell printer cartridges, with a range of other monk-producd products you can buy:

In the UK, more modestly, Gorton monastery will provide fridge magnets among other things, and Ampleforth offers Old Amplefordian braces, damson gin, cufflinks , and a link to some Norwegian Cistercian nuns who market moisturizer and “St Olav’s Skin Treatment”, made of pomegranate, aloe vera, peach kernel, yarrow, rosemary and green tea in a bottle with a “real wood” top. No flies on them. Get your Christmas shopping done now.

There’s a great comment from Philip in the USA:

Monks made a lot more money back in the day, when they sold penance. Oh, but then there was that Reformation thing. My bad.

Fridge magnets, braces, cufflinks and moisturiser? Small scale stuff. A bit charming and olde-worlde really. The church used to film “4 Weddings and a Funeral” is more up to date, using the advantages that come from being a Hollywood brand.

The Priory Church of St Gregory the Great (the church made famous by Four Weddings and a Funeral) has installed cash registers at its doors and is charging visitors to come in. It’s the first parish church to demand a fee, seven cathedrals already do so. £4 will get you in – if you’re not there for a service – or for £30 you can go as many times as you like in a year.

I’ll have to set aside the idea that anyone would be drawn by Four Weddings and a Funeral to want to do anything like visiting the church where the aforementioned rites of passage took place, as opposed to, say, giving the director and actors a good kicking. If anything, you would think the association would have driven even the most devout parishioner to think seriously about trusting their spiritual welfare to a different City church.

Turns out it’s for its roof – the archetypal church roof fund – rather than for massive US-pastor-style personal enrichment. What is it about church roofs? Why are they always so crap?

However, this is interesting in itself. It’s the City of London, (to you Americans, it’s like Wall Street, but generally richer….) A fair proportion of its regular visitors could probably buy a new roof without seriously breaking into their annual bonuses. Doesn’t this imply that the City of London’s Christian commodity traders may be a fair bit more in thrall to Mammon than to their supposed Christianity? Perish the thought.

Data protection?

The BBC website has a rather shocking article today. The title is “UK’s families put on fraud alert” There is a brief lead-in, pretty well guaranteed to induce paranoia in anyone who might be on the Child Benefit database, warning them to check their bank accounts, on the authority of a government minister no less.

Two computer discs holding the personal details of all families in the UK with a child under 16 have gone missing.
The Child Benefit data on them includes name, address, date of birth, National Insurance number and, where relevant, bank details of 25m people. (from the BBC article)

Blimey. 25 million people’s personal details fit on two disks? And these disks holding very personal information were getting sent to the National Audit Office? Slight aside while I wonder why? More of this vaunted “joined up government” in action? I assume that bit in the Data Protection Act about information only being used for the purpose for which it’s gathered is just too quaint for today’s new information society?

Doesn’t this infinitely foreseeable event call into question the whole ID card madness yet again? How long before the records held by the multi billion health service computer, the passport office, the criminal records bureau, the tax office, the humongous national DNA register or the vehicles and licence authority also go AWOL? How much easier will it be for everyone’s personal information on the vaunted unified national identity database to disappear at one fell swoop?

(Note to self. Stop posting questions.)

WDYB’s top five god-thankers (cockney rhyming slang)

Bored with dull sanity? Here’s a roundup of blogs that defy parody, with the organising motif of “Thanking God.” I haven’t linked but you can disentangle the crap from the urls if you really want to see them. As far as I can make out they aren’t parody sites although that is your first assumption. I hope I can be corrected on at least one of these.

I was planning a list of sporting events and movie award wins where the contenders credited him upstairs (subtly boasting of being God’s favourite). Sadly, Google is strangely reticent on this topic although I found some good rants on the practice. In fact, most of the “god-thankers” were just expressing a generalised sense of gratitude to the universe for new linux functions, ffs.

But, as a consolation, I found these sites that thanked the big guy for “gifts” that the rational mind might imagine could best be described as “curses”.

First off. How about “Thank god for global warming.” It has basically one article and most of its categories and posts point to this. The argument is that global warming is just a con to make us pay more taxes and to extend the role of government. At least that’s a point of view, albeit one that has never felt the chilling edge of Occam’s Razor. The rest, such as “what if the human race disappeared, the planet would still warm” is just arrant nonsense.

The next one sort of fits in with my original idea, except that it doesn’t have losers so I’m going to leave the link. Godwin’s Fitness Club testimonials page. Godwin’s seems to be a gym with a ministry attached or vice versa. Everyone here thanks God for their improved muscle tone.

The Politics of the Cross gets in just because it explains that it has problems thanking god for Canada, on the grounds that

” our government … is becoming more and more pagan all the time. Moreover, we are to bear in mind that government can as easily be a vehicle of the Antichrist as a blessing (cf. Rev. 13).”

I have to credit Anne Coulter Watch with reporting that the deeply-unpleasant-one believed that God supported the extermination of the native population of America:

Ò€œThank God the white man did win or we would not have the sort of equality and freedom, or life, that we have now.Ò€

Last, but the clear winner on any scale of evil dementedness is, naturally, the Westboro Baptists. On their charmingly-named “God Hates Fags” site, they are kind enough to thank God for the London Tube bombings.

Thank God for the bombing of London’s subway today – July 7, 2005 – wherein dozens were killed and hundreds seriously injured. Wish it was many more.
“But thou shalt say unto them, This is a nation that obeyeth not the voice of the Lord their God, nor receiveth correction; truth is perished, and is cut off from their mouth.” Jer. 7:28.
England: Island of the Sodomite Damned

Of course, that is probably small beer to you Americans, compared to Hurricane Katrina and the deaths of countless US servicemen, for which they also thank their deeply unpleasant deity.

I notice there is a section on their site called “Love Crusades.” It’s a list of the upcoming funerals of US servicemen that they are going to picket. Now even the most hard-hearted TV fake-childcare expert might think was a step too far in the “tough love” direction.

I truly hope their god loves them with the same fervour that they love servicemen and the population of London or New Orleans.

Throw fuel on a fire

Libby Purves, writing in the Times took up the call of Keith Jarrett, the retiring president of the National Black Police Association, for the re-introduction of stop and search to combat rising numbers of youth murders.

If you aren’t British, you won’t know that stop-and-search practices have a long and disastrous history in UK policing. They contributed to terrible relations between police and young black men, in particular, when the criteria for looking “suspicious” enough to get stopped and searched in the street rested almost entirely on whether you were a young black male or not.

Maybe Keith Jarrett is considering that the policy would cut the number of young civilians killed by turning the anger of young black men against police rather than each other. Hmm, that seems a bit mean to his police colleagues. But, otherwise, it’s very hard to understand how alienating young people further from society is going to do anything to cut crime.

I suspect that Keith Jarrett just knows full well what type of soundbite will get picked up by all the British media and he’s thinking of a less arduous and better-paid career in politics or television. Bugger the consequences.

Libby Purves presents Jarrett’s silly argument in a really odd way. It’s a “challenge to political correctness” etc…. So far, so predictable. But she ties it in with a trend for other people saying the supposedly unsayable, as if they are all part of a wave of new anti-PC thinking, thus implying a spurious authority for Jarrett’s nonsense.

For instance, she includes Trevor Phillips – of the soon to be defunct, if it’s not already closed down, Commission for Racial Equality – saying that multiculturalism is a farce. Well, yes, but Trevor Phillips was demanding real integration, not proposing an increase in bigotry.

She includes the Chief Constable of North Wales who called for the legalisation of heroin. A perfectly rational call from someone who can see the social effects of prohibition and suggests a reasonable solution.

Have you spotted the difference yet? These people were not challenging an imaginary “political correctness.” They were making rational arguments about social policies that are producing effects that are exactly opposite to those they are supposed to be aiming to achieve.

Jarrett is not doing this. He is calling for the adoption of a strategy that has clearly failed on any measure. Repeatedly. There is nothing like getting stopped and humiliated in the street when blamelessly going about your business for building a deep and abiding hatred of the police among the generally law-abiding.

With modern technology, the horrors of the old Sus laws would be increased exponentially. Under new proposals, the police are to have laptops on which to record details of “suspects”. Identity documents and DNA databases and all the panapoly of an authoritarian modern state will each feed into the mix. Already the UK DNA database is a world leader (in a shameful league.) The proportion of black males whose DNA is stored is an unspeakably scandalous feature of this.

Libby Purves presents the arguments against this mad policy, albeit sneeringly (OK, it’s not as if I am stranger to the sneer, myself.)

Until now the lazy mantra has been that the police are Ò€œinstitutionally racistÒ€, as the Macpherson report put it, and cannot be trusted. They have to record every instance of searching, and have been threatened with legal action by racial equality watchdogs and accused of poisoning community relations. The riots of 1980, 1981 and 1985 in Bristol, Brixton and Handsworth were triggered by heavy-handed police action against black suspects, mainly in search of drugs or stolen property.

She infers that this may have been all very well in those distant days

But this is 2007, and the crimes that police have to prevent are not predominantly drugs or burglary, but murders: often by teenagers, of teenagers

.

She then lists some recent murders. This is clearly to make it seem as if the evidence supports the proposed solution. She presents no evidence for why or how this will work except that Keith Jarrett claims that black parents whom he knows support the idea.

Let me do the same. Young people have been shot and stabbed in my my neighbourhood. Kids from my old primary school have both murdered and been murdered. I will face magnetic north and say “K’plah” repeatedly at random intervals. That will sort it out then?

Stop and search will prevent murders? How? How on earth?

The comments have some predictable responses. For instance, Liz Scott, Gutersloh, Germany says:

The truth hurst, and no matter how hard these white, “liberal”, fat, rich old men try to cover it up, the crime figures are real, and real solutions must be made to overcome them.

Another cover-up? By mysterious white, “liberal”, fat, rich old men? (Aside, I love the way liberal is capitalised. I love the way fat is even in there.)

Jane, Birmingham, UK

I am all for stop and search – if you have nothing to hide then why should you mind afterall it is done to protect us from the maniacs carrying knives and drugs.

But there are comments that bear repeating.
Donald Ideh, London, UK:

… As a black professional, I have experienced the ugly face of policing, the ordinary prejudice with which they carry out their duties. I have had an innocent family member tortured by the state in the infamous Stoke Newington Police Station. These youths are already over represented in prisons and police data bases. The sad irony is that that they are also most likely to be the victims of violent crime.

JonB, Glasgow, UK:

“the crimes that police have to prevent are not predominantly drugs or burglary, but murders”
What!?!?!? Are you mad?? You’re claiming there are more murders than drugs or burglary offences?

Are Ruandan clergy next in line for the Pope’s blessing?

The pope has apparently begun ensainting Franco’s clergy (or whatever the word is for declaring them to have been “saints” rather than “active supporters of a dictator who overthrew a democratically elected government by force.” Think Guernica). According to the Times, a fight broke out

outside a church in Rome yesterday after the Pope beatified 498 priests and nuns killed in the Spanish Civil War.
Members of the congregation attacked left-wing protesters carrying a banner that read: Ò€œThose who have killed, tortured and exploited cannot be beatified.Ò€

Franco? The 1930s fascist who clung on to power for decades by the simple expedient of not joining his fascist chums in the Second World War. According to the Times, again,

Bands of Communist and Anarchist irregulars on the Republican side burnt churches and killed thousands of priests and nuns. Falangist death squads executed tens of thousands of Spaniards suspected of harbouring leftist sympathies

So, if we are stacking up bodies to measure levels of atrocity, it looks as if even the Times sees that Franco’s toll was the highest.

This isn’t just a historical point, there are current resonances.

The countryÒ€ℒs Socialist Government has clashed repeatedly with the Roman Catholic Church. The Prime Minister, José Luis RodrÍguez Zapatero, whose grandfather was executed by FrancoÒ€ℒs forces, has caused howls of protest from conservatives after introducing a law aimed at redressing the injustices suffered by victims of the regime. Among other measures, the law orders the removal of any symbols of the dictatorship, which arguably include the shrines in many Spanish churches to the dead on FrancoÒ€ℒs side. Republican victims still lie in dozens of unmarked mass graves around the country.

Why draw the line in Spain? Why not go the distance and start beatifying the Ruandan clergy involved in promoting genocide.

Doesn’t this act seem like calculated provocation with the Pope intervening to show which side he’s on in the current climate?

No mad quack

Minette Marrin ranted absurdly against Michael Moore’s new film Sicko, in the Times Online.

Apparently, Michael Moore made the unarguable point that the NHS is free. (Well, almost free, except for prescription and dentistry charges) Free at the point of delivery. Provided according to need, not according to the ability to pay. That’s the principle.

For the benefit of Americans, that means, for example, that you don’t face bankruptcy at the same time as major illness.

Being sick is bad enough in itself, surely. Free access to competent medical treatment isn’t just one of the best candidates for recognition as a universal human right. It even makes perfect common sense socially, given that the healthy aren’t normally mad-keen to catch TB from the untreated poor.

The infinite superiority of free medical care was made eloquently clear by Richard Titmuss decades ago in The Gift Relationship: From Human Blood to Social Policy , original updated 1997, LSE Books.* Titmuss showed that the properties of altruism and social responsibility, on which UK blood banks depended, actually produced a product – blood for transfusion – that was of better quality than that available from US blood banks. (People who sold their blood tended to be hungry, diseased, alcoholic and/or drugged. People who willingly gave blood tended to be healthy. Well, d’uh.)

Moore seems to be making a similar, but updated, point that free healthcare is better for the vast majority of consumers, is cheaper and more effective. (We are English. We aren’t supposed to need telling that.)

It’s hard to see how free health care could seem like a bad thing to anyone except the executives of medical insurance companies. (Not even to doctors, given that they do pretty well out of the NHS and can also run unfeasibly profitable private practices.)

In England, we complacently take the National Health Service for granted. We whine constantly about specific local problems. Plenty of people (including us) rant about crazy high-level decisions to spend billions on computerising bits of it. But, we genuinely cannot imagine what it would be like to live without it.

Well not so Minette Marrin. Her piece has the title “Quack Michael Moore has mad view of the NHS

Quack? So Michael Moore’s film is peddling crystal aromatherapy for cancer then? I assumed from the reviews that it was about the horrors of US healthcare and the merits of alternative ways to provide it. Silly me.

She claims that Moore showed a rosy view of the NHS, apparently by showing a clean and efficient hospital.

You would never guess from Sicko that the NHS is in deep trouble, mired in scandal and incompetence, despite the injection of billions of pounds of taxpayersÒ€ℒ money.

Well, I can only assume that her definition of “deep trouble” is subtly different from mine. Even without referring to years of targets- and cost- and privatisation-driven policies that have been imposed on the NHS (spot the misdirection, yes, I did mention them) I would say that the NHS may face a few problems

These tend to be problems talked up out of all proportion by a biased media, but, wait, that’s what she’s accusing Michael Moore of doing.

Nothing undermines the principle that our NHS is so superior to the US health care system that it can look mockingly over its shoulder at US healthcare and say “Call that a health care system?” Then give a sarcastic laugh.

Even Minette has to acknowledge this, after she’s brought up a selection of NHS failings: prevalence of hospital infections; loss-making NHS trusts and GPs who don’t provide out of hours healthcare.

None of these problems mean we should abandon the idea of a universal shared system of healthcare. ItÒ€ℒs clear we would not want the American model, even if it isnÒ€ℒt quite as bad as portrayed by Moore.

I think that is too grudging and it’s way too late to unsay what she’s already said.

The issues she mentioned are all issues of policy. They do not in any way relate to the wider principle of free universal health care. It’s as if Micahel Moore said he liked your house. You say “I hate it”, listing things you hate – like the creaking doors – without considering that this might imply that you believe you would be better off homeless.

* See, I can reference, though granted it’s not Harvard system. The British Medical Journal has a full reference. There’s a Wikipedia article on Richard Titmuss, if you are interested in post-WWII social policies

TV nanny sent to naughty step

It gives me no pleasure to report that Channel 4 are investigating the qualifications of its TV nanny, according to Guardian.. Well, OK. I lied. Yes it does. It gives me huge pleasure. πŸ™‚

This woman has been on television giving horrific instructions to parents about leaving babies to cry and limiting cuddle time to ten minutes a day. And so on. Fashions change drastically in how to relate to your children. The 1930s “Truby King” style neglect is the most pernicious parenting fashion ever.

New parents are scared and open to any outside influences that claim to have the answer to their difficulties. TV experts that seem to have a simple answer are an obvious resource for people who may not have friends or family who can help. Sadly, these answers are s^ite. It is dog-training for humans.

So. Wahay. It’s great to see yet another spurious telly “expert” on life have the basis of their expertise challenged. (Cf Gillian McKeith, et al.) Let’s see the TV nanny sent to her room, please.

For conspiracy nutters

cowboy clown image The prime suspect. (Image from 4Halloween costumes.) (Messed about with a bit. Please don’t complain it’s free advertising)

From the Diana inquest – which Marina Hyde so memorably described as being about “a conspiracy so fiendishly clever it could have been foiled by the wearing of a seatbelt” – comes a bizarre “revelation”

Spies apparently bent on murder do not just specifically pick a time and place for their skullduggery when the world’s paparazzi is on the spot and primed for some momentous event. They also make themselves inconspicuous by dressing in a style that would raise an eyebrow at a fancy dress parade.

… in the Alma tunnel Jacques Morel trod on the foot of a man wearing pointy western boots. He says he spoke to Mohammed Al Fayed hours after the crash and when he told him this, the Harrods owner said: “I knew they were there. They’re the bastards that did it, the secret service.”
For many in the court it was the first time they had learnt you could tell a spy by his boots, though Mr Al Fayed was supplied with other descriptive details.
The suspected agent with sore toes was muscular and had a moustache like Salvador Dali’s, or a beer drinker in Ireland. (from the BBC website)

I was going to be uncharitable about Mohammed Al Fayed’s grasp on reality but the BBC report says that he himself has ‘no memory’ of this telephone conversation.

This bizarre nonsense comes straight from a Mr Morel. Surprisingly, ahem, he has written a book about the deaths…. (This book is reportedly ‘based in part on a secret “explosive” dossier,’ according to the BBC again.)

Oh yes, and…

He fears for his family’s safety because of what he knows. He wants to move to a Caribbean island

Well, don’t we all? I myself can provide the real answer to the entire Diana death “mystery” so easily. I am, naturally, waiting for the Caribbean hideaway to materialise before I divulge the whole cunning plot.

But , just to whet the appetite of the big publishers – Basically, a secret cabal of evil clowns were in one of those circus cars that dozens of people can fit in. They jumped out in the tunnel, sprayed alcohol into the face of the driver from their comedy flowers then pulled off the steering wheel and the car turned into incoming traffic. The assassin clowns all got back in their circus car and disappeared in a puff of red smoke.

One was too slow, because his comedy boots got stood on by Mr Morel (isn’t that a mushroom?) so he got spotted but he managed to grab a trapeze that had been rigged in the tunnel roof for the getaway and swung out of the tunnel just before the flashbulbs popped.

Pretty convincing hey? Beats the crap out of any of the popular conspiracy theories anyway.

Wingnuts rewrite history

In an amazing piece of pseudo-history, Worldnet daily is bizarrely claiming the Ku Klux Klan as an invention of the Democrats, set up to target Republicans, no less. (With an implicit suggestion that this is where Democratic politics really lead, in sharp contrast to Republicans’ tolerance and diversity.) Snurfle. Choke on your coffee. You think I’m joking?

I am going to quote WND. (Sorry.) Richard Barton is the author of:

….”Setting the Record Straight: American History in Black & White,” which … that not only did the Democrats work hand-in-glove with the Ku Klux Klan for generations, they started the KKK and endorsed its mayhem.
“Of all forms of violent intimidation, lynchings were by far the most effective,” Barton said in his book. “Republicans often led the efforts to pass federal anti-lynching laws and their platforms consistently called for a ban on lynching. Democrats successfully blocked those bills and their platforms never did condemn lynchings.”

Now, I am pretty certain that enough Democrats were implicated in the activities of the KKK. However, there is something that could politely be called “disingenuous” in the WND attempt to whitewash the Republican’s major role. Indeed to present the Republicans a dogged fighters against the KKK hamstrung by Democratic opposition. (It could less politely be called lots of things, such as “barking mad”, “lying” and so on. For any WND readers who’ve strayed here by the grace of Google, I’ll have to admit “Yes, that is in fact what I mean. I was using the word disingenuous, because I was pretty sure you wouldn’t know what it meant.”)

All the same, I do recognise there has been something of great leap forward in the US. At least, the actions of the KKK must now be recognised as so universally repellent that you can really harm your political opponents by making spurious attributions of relation to them.

I found some interesting observations on Christian Ethics Today about Nicholas Barton whose spreading this crap.

Barton has become the guru of Religious Right antiseparationism.

(referring to the separation of church and state)

A careful look at that material, however, shows that Ò€œMythbuildersÒ€ would describe it more accurately than Ò€œWallbuilders,Ò€ for the essence of his message rests on eight historical fallacies regarding the Constitution

Basically, they are politely saying he’s a far-right nutjob and that Wallbuilders is a pseudo history site with anti-separation of church and state agenda…. This point of view is put rather more forcefully on Right Wing Watch blog, where a Sept 19 post said

A Right-Wing Three-Fer
Right-wing pseudo-historian David Barton will be addressing the Regent Law School chapter of the Federalist Society….

In fact, now I’ve got to Right Wing Watch, I see that there’s an much more elegant deconstruction of this ludicrous David Barton story than I can manage. (Because I’m too busy laughing at the effrontery of it)

Yet another badger rant

The science shows that culling badgers would spread, not limit the spread of cattle TB, according to Roy Hattersley, writing in the Guardian today

.. the assumption that culling will reduce the incidence of the disease is wrong. Indeed, unless we brush aside the work of Britain’s most distinguished conservation scientists, we have to conclude that the sort of cull proposed by Sir David King, the government’s chief scientific adviser, will do more harm than good.

Well said, Roy. He points out that killing badgers will only placate the influential National Farmers’ Union leaders who have either no rational idea what to do or who see more effective responses as too costly.

The argument is that limited killing of badgers would be counter-productive. David McDonald of Oxford University calculated that a cull in Cornwall – the central focus – would cut the TB incidence there by 20% but increase the level outside the cull area by 27%.

An unlimited culling of badgers would surely be an environmental crime of immense proprtions. No government needs to placate farmers that badly. Can’t we just pay them to leave the badgers alone or to vaccinate their cattle?

Roy Hattersley, points out that, even if the government doesn’t follow the simple moral path and refuse the cull, there would be a serious political fallout.

there is no doubt that, should ministers decide to follow his (the chief scientist’s) advice, they would unleash a countrywide campaign that would make the pro-hunting protesters seem half-hearted.

Well, I’m not holding my breath on the government’s taking an ethical stance on this. However, as a distinguished old-Labour politician, Hattersley is probably pretty shrewd when it comes to judging what might have influence on the Department of the Environment. Let’s hope that a government keen to paint itself as green doesn’t miss his message.

Deny this

Climate change denialists have yet another serious piece of evidence to  ignore.

The work was produced through a collaboration of the Global Carbon Project, University of East Anglia and British Antarctic Survey. Studies of ice cores found that levels of atmospheric carbon dioxide were rising at a rate that is about a third higher than was predicted only half a dozen years ago.

This increasing rate is not seen as due to an increase in emissions but to an apparently failing planetary capacity to soak up the excess. This is a very depressing finding, suggesting that it might soon be too late to do anything to solve the problem.

The study suggests that

….18% came from a decline in the natural ability of land and oceans to soak up CO2 from the atmosphere.
About half of emissions from human activity are absorbed by natural “sinks” but the efficiency of these sinks has fallen, the study suggests. (From the BBC report of the study)

If you can understand it, the dry pre-publication abstract is available at the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences website
