Back story

I was trying to ignore this – partly because every post here seems to be turning out to be a crap version of some other atheist’s blog post and I never find out until I’ve posted. But, hoping that the Daily Mail Online is too distasteful for the more faint-hearted in the atheosphere, I’ll present this story.
The Daily Mail headline says:

Wife ‘cured’ by prayer can’t get benefits stopped because government computer doesn’t recognise miracles

….With the Government pledging to crack down on “sicknote Britain”, it seems remarkable the 56-year-old received more than £3,500 she did not even want.

(Stop sniggering at the back!!! Of course, she had to withdraw it………)

What? The government has a sceptical computer? And it’s forcing public money on Christians against their will?

The “story”: A woman got disability payments for 6 years after she had to stop working because of the damage to her “hip, pelvis and spine” (Maybe I’m being too pedantic, but aren’t these all more or less the same place?) She got better but didn’t tell the Social Security (/Department of Work and Pensions or whatever it’s called now.) Then she did. They said she needed confirmation from a doctor before they could stop her claim being processed. But now they have stopped it and she has to pay a few months’ money back.

Simple story. Twisted by the Daily Mail and the people involved into a piece of journalistic excrement that manages to claim evidence of a religious miracle, at the same time as insulting the government.

It’s a little out of character for the Daily Mail – the fearless scourge of the dole-scrounging workshy – to be putting a case that it’s somehow the fault of the government that someone claimed disability allowance when they weren’t disabled.

Was it the spirit of Christmas that prompted this surprising change of heart toward benefits claimants? No, it’s the spirit of Christianity or, at least, of one of its odder forms.

Her husband Stuart, 58, a pastor at Hooe Baptist Church, said that he prayed every day after the accident that God would “bring my wife back”.
The prayer seemed to be answered when his wife attended a Christian conference in January last year.
Within hours, Mrs Clarke was able to fold away her wheelchair and stop taking painkillers. When she realised she was permanently cured four months later, she contacted the Government’s Industrial Injury Department to put a stop to her benefits.
… But the department continued to give her £600 a month – and she ended up being paid £3,600 in incapacity benefits for a period when she was in perfect health.

Oh, so she has to pay back benefits to which she wasn’t entitled, then? (I assume her husband is working, unless it’s a voluntary pastor thing. So she probably wouldn’t have got social security benefit at all – which is a lot less than £600 a month if she wasn’t a permanent invalid. But I digress.)

Ignore the legal aspects or even the sequence of events that must have led to this story.

(Picture an embarrassed civil servant – who is trying to get out of a conversation with a woman who says “I’ve now been healed by a miracle” – saying “Oh good. I just need to see some confirmation from a doctor before I stop the computer payments.” Woman phones Daily Mail in horror.)

What about the confused and confusing theology here? The injury apparently had nothing to with god, (unless the deity wanted this couple to get some invalidity cheques and decided to injure her. Mysterious ways, etc…) But the healing itself came directly from their deity. Well, OK, not actually directly, as such. I mean, it took 6 bloody years to work. The pastor can’t be very good at it, can he? Or god just didn’t care.

She was healed after attending a service? Well, a matter of “hours” after attending a service. Granted there is no time too large to be considered a matter of hours, but I’ll take it this as meaning “a day or so.” He’s a pastor and this is the only service she’s attended in 6 and a half years? Seems unlikely. In fact, it seems unlikely that there are any times in their lives that aren’t a matter of hours removed from attendance at a service.

So, where is the miracle even supposed to be here? God had been too busy fixing the results of World’s Strongest Man competitions and Hollywood awards, that he forgot to take all his calls. But one day, he suddenly switched on his prayer-answerphone, heard the 6 year-old message and decided to do what this one pastor asked. (The selfish bugger could have prayed for world peace or dying babies or at least healing a few amputees, if it was going to work.)

A cynic might see it as the miracle of the new anti-Invalidity Benefit moves by the government – very much spurred by the Daily Mail and its ilk – which involve following fake physically disabled people and photographing them walking to the pub or even (in one recent case) running marathons. This sort of activity can cause great stress to mentally and physically ill people but that cuts no ice with the Daily Mail or its middle-England readers.

Miraculous healings seems to soften their hard taxpayers’ hearts indeed. Soften their heads too, it appears.

Bear with me

Wow, yet another ursine soft toy with political implications, though this time it’s a teddy making a gentle point about how society has been changed by anti-immigration hysteria. Paddington, the star of the long-popular children’s book series gets hassled over his immigration status in the latest book by Michael Bond.

Michael Bond, the 81-year-old writer who created Britain’s favourite asylum seeker back in 1958, returns with his first novel-length collection of Paddington stories for 30 years, and the bear in the duffel coat is confronted with what his creator calls a “very different world”. (from the report in the Guardian)

The story is that the Peruvian-originating Paddington reports a loss to the police and gets into some trouble over his immigration status instead. All works out well in the end, of course. (Don’t have nightmares.)

Nice one, Michael Bond, for the gentle jab in the fake-furry underbelly of our paranoid society.

I will forbear (argh) from mentioning that the London Underground Railway Society is about to seize Michael Bond for the name he gave his creature. But be warned” Militant trainspotters can get really obsessed……

Communion breakfast

Sponsored link (Well, I can dream……):
Gift for your Christian friends
Hold your own communion services at home and find it easier to suspend disbelief than if you’ve been handed a stale wafer and told it’s Jesus’ body.
Get the exact same amount of spiritual benefit that you’d get if you bought a Mary-faced pancake on e-bay, but you can get it fresh every day.

Christ’s face stamper

This is the best among the array of kitsch Christmas gifts on ship of fools, a self-mocking Christian website. It’s a a toast stamper for turning regular unholy toast into toast with Jesus’s image burned into it.
Holy toast

(I think this counts as both fair comment and free advertising, so bleh to any holy copyright lawyers.)

Kill the witch

Child “witches” are being beaten, tortured and abandoned in the Niger Delta, after the local evangelical pastor has pronounced them to be possessed, according to a story by Tracy McVeigh in the Guardian Unlimited.

This possession by a witch can be miraculously removed by the simple payment of money to the pastor. Is this making you puke yet? Just wait till you find out some of the details.

There is a video on the Guardian website. If you find the video too harrowing, there is a gallery of images with some explanations, although that’s not easy viewing either.

Casanova Dawkins

Read Richard Dawkins works? (Well, some anyway.) If you are a man maybe you should reread them again, because I bet you missed the bit about how to be a “babe magnet.” This is the point at which I would traditionally feel impelled to say, “I kid you not”. So I’m saying it.

A reporter for the Times Online turned up for one of the “How to pick up women” seminars that are apparently turning unfeasible male bragging and male credulity into a profitable industry. (It’s quite an entertaining piece.)

This is about one of the keynote speakers, who goes by the nom de seduction of Gem. (I put the Dawkins bit in bold)

… he resembles a Mediterranean shipping magnate the morning after the night before. Gem expands upon his theme by drawing from Richard Dawkins’ book The Selfish Gene, one of three texts which, he says, taught him “everything I know about pick-up”. We must banish our primordial fear, he says, and realise that looks are less important for women than they might be for men. “I am clinically obese,” he continues. “Every day that I go out, I’m disproving the idea that looks are important to women.”

(Nor, if this sort of course is anything to go by, are sincerity, intelligence, or the capacity to treat women as real human beings. 🙂 )

Wikipediaphile inconsequentia

Wikipedia’s demon spawn has been dozens of internet encyclopaedias. Here’s a selection of the encyclopaedisphere’s entries on “God.” I will, naturally, stick to the sillier, crazier or more scurrilous end of the encyclopaedic spectrum.

But first Wikipedia itself, which says

God (IPA: /ɡɒd/) most commonly refers to the deity worshipped by followers of monotheistic and monolatrist religions, whom they believe to be the creator and ruler of the universe.

Hmm, odd grammatical construction, but who I am to criticise, given “the beam in mine own eye” (Source: somewhere in the bible. Bugger, I should have stuck with “cast the first stone”)

Arssepedia, the British Army Rumour Serviice wiki is a bit more forthright, spraying generalised anti-religion ammo, though it’s relatively soft on Christianity.

..the orthodox Christian perspective of The Big “G” views the ‘man upstairs’ as a generally benign sort of bloke who quite likes us on the quiet. There are a quite a few flavours of Christianity:…. They all hate each other to a greater or lesser extent and consider all other Christian groups a bunch of splitters and heretics..

Its Jesus page is more entertaining. It starts with

The Big man’s son…
… he is also the Big man himself…
… and something about an imaginary friend?

Sickipedia has lots of gags of the type that make you think “Well, it’s almost like a joke except for the not-being-funny bit.” I do like this one:

When I was a kid I used to pray every night for a new bike. Then I realised that The Lord doesn’t work that way, so I stole one and asked him to forgive me.

Conservapedia (remember these people complain that Wikipedia is not objective enough….) says:

“In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.”
The word “God” is the general term used to refer to the Creator of the universe. What we know about God comes from three main categories: creation, conscience, and revelation. God has revealed himself in several ways, including through the Bible.
Attributes of God include but are not limited to Wisdom, Infinitude, Sovereignty, Holiness, Trinity, Omniscience, Faithfulness, Love, Omnipotence, Self-existence, Self-sufficiency, Justice, Immutability, Mercy, Eternal, Goodness, Gracious, and Omnipresence. These attributes all work in complete and perfect harmony with one another.
God exercises eternal and righteous judgment of the wicked in hell, because of an inherent problem in the human heart, namely Sin. According to the Bible, the sacrifice of Jesus Christ on the cross of calvary and then resurrection, is God’s merciful and gracious response to the problem of the human heart.

You assume they don’t have a facility for posting stuff like the notes on Wikipedia that say something like “this post is contested, it may not be objective”…

The next entry gets in this list for its exhuberant wackiness despite not really being a Wikipedia evil twin, although it was tagged “god” and is called “ipedia” (That spurred me to look at ipedia.com. Don’t squander any life-force energy by directing your left-clicking finger at this. It’s an advert site, mainly advertising encyclopedias.)

It’s a video from Meyers Bend Pentecostal Church, entitled the Apostolic something or other (Don’t make me watch it again) about a miraculous leg healing, the description for which says:

This wonderful Lady was healed by the power of God! Luke 6:38 (NKJV) Give, and it will be given to you: good measure, pressed down, shaken together, and running over will be put into your bosom. For with the same measure that you use, it will be measured back to you. 2 Corinthians 9:5-10 (NKJV) 5Therefore I thought it necessary to exhort the brethren to go to you ahead of time, and prepare your generous gift beforehand, which you had previously promised, that it may be ready as a matter..

No idea what that means but it’s creepy.

I thought Creedopedia looked promising, as Google took me straight to a Brigham Young University Jerusalem Center page. That should have been mildly entertaining but it’s definitely off topic… No mention of “God” I could spot. The reference is only still here because the site’s called Creedopedia.

Because, I’m scraping the ipedia barrel by now. This is the next link to Darth_Ipedia:

Darth Ipedia was a Dark Lord of the Sith known for dedicating his entire life to studying, collecting, and organizing arcane bits of useless information. No one ever had the heart to tell him his sources weren’t terribly trustworthy, except at the moment of his death at the hands of Darth Awesome. When he realized that all of his knowledge was complete lies, and that his life’s work had been the greatest fallacy since Crystal Pepsi, he is said to have remarked, “Meh.”

No mention of God then, but I suppose there’s a lesson for me in that last one (in bold)…

I’m now wondering what part of “god *ipedia” Google didn’t understand to give me thousands of links that just don’t come near even mentioning “god.” The “god ” bit obviously. Well, maybe Google has done that Kurzweil Singularity thing and become sentient after all, but it’s become an atheist.

Oh, little town of duh????

Supposedly, we British lack “Nativity knowledge”, according to the BBC report of a survey by religious think tank (Yuk. Sorry about the word). Only 1 in 8 British people know the Nativity story well, according to Theos. Really? As many as that?

What answers did they expect to these questions? 73% “knew” Jesus was born in Bethlehem and that an “angel” appeared to Mary to tell her she was pregnant.

Are they using a wholly novel sense of the word “know”? 73% must be a lot more than the percentage of British people who believe that angelic visitations are even possible.

However, that number falls considerably when people are asked slightly more difficult questions. 48% of people know that John the Baptist was Jesus’ cousin but only 22% that Jesus, Mary and Joseph fled to Egypt to escape Herod’s massacre of the innocents.

The evidence for Herod’s massacre and a flight to Egypt is well nigh non-existent, whatever sources you choose. So John the Baptist was Jesus’s cousin, then? Some sort of ongoing family business, this prophesying lark?

The “knowledge” Theos are looking for could most charitably be defined as “familiarity with one particular version of a myth.” All the same, Theos do a full scale attempt at treating this survey as serious. They weight the results, ffs. They analyse the meaningless results by age and geography… and belief….

Unsurprisingly, Christian churchgoers know the story best with 36% answering all questions correctly, compared with only 5% of atheists.

😀

I like this bit at the bottom of the page, which shows that even Theos have to acknowledge there is dispute over the actual content of the answers:

Although some claim that James could also have been Jesus’ cousin, James does not feature in the Christmas story, according to the Christian Bible, on which this research is based, and so was not deemed to be a correct answer.

Crime, Confusion and the Littlejohn Idiocy

Well, I need to start with a disclaimer. Today I had to get the plane to Glasgow and the free newspaper was the Daily Mail. I would never, ever, normally admit to reading this waste of a tree which passes itself off as a newspaper but my choices were limited – I had even read the flight safety leaflet a dozen times.

With a sinking heart I turned the pages of the Mail and I stumbled across an opinion piece by Richard Littlejohn which exceeded the Mails already low standards. Worryingly, as the plane was delayed by about six months (at least it felt that long), I overheard several conversations were other passengers seemed to be broadly in agreement with the nutcase Littlejohn. This might turn out to be long

Showing that despite his poor writing style and complete lack of any grasp of logic, Richard Littlejohn is the master of the strawman fallacy, he wrote a piece titled “Lyrical terrorist is no Joan of Arc.” It is little more than a terror-inspired rant against the new enemy, so I have no qualms about dissecting it here. In good old Daily Mail style, he begins:

The case of Samina Malik, the so- called “lyrical terrorist”, has become a cause celebre.

According to some sections of the media, this woman is a modern-day Joan of Arc.

Malik was convicted at the Old Bailey of terrorism-related offences and was last night given a pathetic nine-month suspended sentence.

Now, interestingly enough, the case of Samina Malik has had almost no coverage in the (UK) general press or the TV news. Describing it as a cause celebre is stretching the truth to whole new levels, even beyond that normally accepted by the mail.

When he writes some sections of the media are implying Malik is a modern-day Joan of Arc, it seems only the Mail has done this – so while it is true in the strictest sense, it is pretty much crap.

The last bit of his opening barrage is really weird. A “nine month suspended sentence” is not pathetic. It is, if anything, excessive considering the offences this woman has committed. We will return to this issue in a moment.

Is it any wonder Osama bin Laden thinks we don’t have the stomach for the fight?

WTF! No, seriously, what on Toutati’s Earth is he going on about here? First off, if Osama Bin Laden thinks “we” (*) dont have the stomach for a fight, why isn’t he fighting us? Why was the last terrorist attack in the UK carried out by British citizens (are they are different “we” fighting?) almost three years ago? I was under the impression Osama Bin Laden wanted to fight the west (not Britain per se) because we were too soft and liberal… Sound familiar Richard?

But more importantly, what has a nine month suspended sentence for writing intimidating poetry got to do with fighting OBL? This is taking the bogeyman to whole new levels.

Anyway, you might be wondering what terrorist atrocity did this woman (Malik, not Littlejohn) commit, for which a 9 month suspended sentence was “pathetic.”

Most comment has centred upon a book of her poetry in which she fantasises about beheadings.

It is claimed she’s a victim of thought crime, persecuted for what she thinks, not what she has done or was intending to do.

Cue Dr Abdul Bari, the senna-haired, Spike Milligan-lookalike [**] “secretary-general” of the Muslim Council of Britain, who protests she has been criminalised merely for harbouring “silly thoughts”.

Well, yes. Here the “journalist,” cardboard-box lookalike Littlejohn states some facts. It must hurt him to do this. After a few insults at the Times (also a right wing hate magazine which pretends to be a news paper but at least it is infinitely more “journalistic” than the Mail will ever be, so no wonder the semi-literate Littlejohn dislikes them) he returns to the real subject of his ire:

But there’s more, much more. The BBC sent a reporter to the street where she lives in Southall to solicit local opinion.

Inconveniently, and instructively, they found not all her neighbours shared the bien pensant view of a misguided innocent falling foul of a heavy-handed police state.

Malik was described on the BBC as a shop assistant from West London.

Which is true, up to a point. But that’s a bit like describing the failed July 21 suicide bombers as “commuters”.

Wow, the bogeyman is working overtime here. Not all of her neighbours thought she was a wonderful person? My God, Burn the Witch! Why is she allowed on the street if people don’t like her!

It seems this is not all she is guilty of either. The last sentence points to where this is going, you see Malik is no ordinary shop assistant…

What they didn’t mention is that she works at Heathrow Airport, in W.H. Smith.

Ah, now it is clear. She is guilty of being Islamic in an Airport. I can see why Littlejohn is so worked up over the short sentence – she should be publicly stoned to death. It seems that, along with military and police service, now minimum wage shop assistants at a national newsagents chain have to sacrifice any hope of having something resembling civil liberties.

Obviously Mr Littlejohn is so outraged at the thought a person both stupid and Islamic could be allowed to work at Heathrow (a place he claims he knows), he has become blind to the fact that the airside staff undergo the same security screening as passengers. Today, I stood in the queue to be scanned at Heathrow (shoes off, belt off, coat off, no fluids over 100ml etc…) and watched as a dozen or so airport staff went through the exact same process. That is as it should be.

Now, with this in mind, one has to ask what her job has to do with her sentencing? Littlebrain Littlejohn continues, talking about the risks of ignoring her stupid writings:

Would you take the risk? Imagine if the police had ignored it, or dismissed this as the ramblings of a “silly girl”.

And then a couple of days later she’d made fantasy a reality, walked into the crowded terminal with a couple of pounds of Semtex and a box of two-inch nails in her handbag, lit the blue touchpaper and blown herself and God knows how many holidaymakers and airport workers to Kingdom Come.

Well, for once this seems a reasonably justifiable fear. There is the risk that lunatics might turn themselves into human fireworks in the airport. This is not what Malik was charged with. Her status as a WHSmith’s shop assistant makes her no more dangerous than anyone else who would do this. Here, Littlejohn has created the illusion of a greater threat to justify his nasty, small minded, evil attitude.

She was also found to be in possession of seditious material – including the Al Qaeda Manual, the Terrorist’s Handbook, the Mujahideen Poisons Handbook, instructions in the use of a Dragunov sniper rifle, other firearms and an RPG, and a guide entitled How To Win Hand-to-Hand Fighting.

You can’t pick up any of those choice publications alongside your Daily Mail on the racks of W.H. Smith, Heathrow.

Oh no! She had an “Al Qaeda Manual!” Hang the seditious witch. She has obviously not only committed the crime of being Islamic in an Airport, but she has also committed the heinous crime of reading books normally reserved for 15 year old boys.

First off, “Al Qaeda Manual” is meaningless. They dont have an AQ Army. There is no “1st Battalion, the London AQ.” The fact she has an electronic book titled “How to win hand to hand fighting” doesn’t carry any more significance than the fact I have an e-book which claims to teach you how to play the guitar (I still cant play it). While these items may be a bit childish, there is no law against ownership of them. If reading them gave you the Ninja fighting skills they claim, then military training the world over would be pointless.

I mean, does she even own a Dragunov Sniper Rifle? I doubt it, so I can’t really see what danger she poses from possessing the book…

Littlejohn’s whole opinion piece is nothing but nonsensical, hysterical fear mongering. As he draws to a close, Littlejohn shows the depths of the fear which grips him:

There are said to be thousands of people living among us who want to kill us and destroy our way of life.

If Malik isn’t one of them, then she at least gives the impression of being more than willing to help them out when they’re busy.

Our fellow citizens are being wiped out on the streets of London by Islamist headbangers who buy into precisely this kind of dangerous fanaticism.

There’s nothing sophisticated about the useful idiots rallying to support her.

This really does defy belief. It is said by people like Littlejohn that there are thousands of people trying to kill us and destroy our way of life. What solution do these fools suggest to fight them? They suggest we dismantle our way of life to stop “them” doing it. Idiocy. Real, full on, idiocy.

“If Malik isn’t one of them” – note the use of “them.” Very telling use of language to hide the fact that even people like Littlejohn are aware Malik wasn’t really some one out to destroy civilisation.

“Our fellow citizens are being wiped out on the streets of London” – WTF! (Twice in one post!). Where this has come from, Toutatis only knows.

Sadly, once in a while Littlejohn is right: There is nothing sophisticated in supporting Malik. It is simply the correct thing to do if we want to defend our way of life and our society – which is what I thought was the overall goal… There is, however, nothing decent, right, honourable or humane about attacking Malik in the manner Littlejohn tries – it is just offensive and petty. A bit like Richard Littlejohn.

Aside: The Times has an article on this as well.

* How dare retards like Littlejohn belittle the sacrifices made by the British Armed forces by claiming it is done in his name… I haven’t seen him in the Tora Bora mountains hunting down AQ…

** The wonderful ad hominem. If it is OK for Littlejohn, it is OK for me and, as such, I will have no problems with occasional, pointless, insults.

Juking the school stats

This probably shows incipient OCD, but the UK primary school league tables have a bizarre fascination. Partly because of the fact that five schools were disqualified for cheating, among them two Roman Catholic schools. 🙂

However cheering this may be to anti-theists, I have to resist the temptation to make too much of it, as I suspect that cheating is built into the very nature of the enterprise.

Teachers generally hate the league tables, for far too many good reasons to repeat here. But here’s a flavour of teachers’ feelings. Interviewed by the BBC, Steve Sinnott of the National Union of Teachers said

“…League tables are beyond repair. Attempts to modify league tables only serve to emphasise their unfairness.”
And the National Association of Head Teachers said in a statement: “There is no doubt that at best, league tables of raw test data simply show where rich people live. ..

To get back to the OCD bit, and as an illustration of how the whole enterprise is shady, I ran the both the top schools and bottom schools list through Excel to get an average value for Special Educational Needs (SEN) pupils. SEN refers to children with physical and mental disabilities. You would imagine that SEN schools would be unfairly disadvantaged, but such schools are excluded from meeting the SATs targets. So the SEN % of pupils does not include those children who get specialist provision for disabilities. The percentage refers to SEN children in mainstream education.

Anyway, it appears that the average percentage of SEN children across all local authorities that have schools in the top or bottom leagues is 45.27% The lowest I could spot, in a quick scan) was Leicestershire at 10.6%. The highest was Warwickshire with a stunning 71.8% of its children classified as having special educational needs.

There are certainly league table advantages in having children classified as Special Needs. The more SEN kids an authority has, the more credit it gets for any improvements and, possibly, the better claim it has on some funds.

You can’t blame hard-pressed schools and local authorities for wanting to claim to have lots of SEN kids. All the same, there are many reasons for disliking the outcome. I’ll just spill out a couple before I bore even myself out of reading on.

Firstly. good old-fashioned social science and labelling theory. If you are a child living in Warwickshire, etc, you might feel a little odd if you lack an SEN label, but elsewhere SEN kids generally still remain in the slight minority. I can’t imagine that it does much for your educational self-confidence to get the label. (And I bet kids can still be as vicious to the kids they see as “thick” as they were when I was at school.)

With our kids getting all their details collected in national databases, an SEN evaluation, that may be prompted more by local educational policy than by a true assessment of a child’s capacities, might still be hanging around the kid’s records until they are old enough to apply for a job or a place at university.
Secondly, what a depressing picture of UK kids, with almost half of them judged to be unable to meet the government’s joyless and inflexible standards without extra prodding.

Thirdly, the SEN figures suggest how deeply the targets have cut into how we present and structure education. (Taking up a general point made by Ian Curtis in last year’s TV series The Trap about the corrupting effect of targets on the quality of public services.

(Frivolous aside. The “juking the stats” phrase in the title was of course lifted from the Wire, whose name be eternally praised. As it does with more or less any social issue, the Wire showed, in a handy easy-to-swallow tv show format, how the concern for SAT scores and stats can actually prevent effective teaching and learning. Watch Series 4. Again. Please.)

Early Christmas presents from America

All you Yanks know this, but still I want to post good news sometimes.

The Guardian reports that Congress is “About to clash with Bush on Torture Techniques.”

Senate and House officials have included the ban on waterboarding – condemned by human rights groups as a form of torture – in their respective bills authorising 2008 spending for intelligence programmes.

This adds to the Habeas Corpus action on Gitmo and the new rules to put at least some control US “security” firms in Iraq.

Plus the apparent stepping back from a war with Iran, which is the best news of all. Thank you,Toutatis.

(Note mention of suitable Druid deity. For the Exterminator)

Bigoted misrepresentation does not serve reason

I hate to spoil a good story with the facts. (No. I don’t. I love it.) Richard Dawkins net reported a Daily Express story which claimed that overworked nurses were having to move Muslim patients’ beds 5 times a day to face Mecca. This had no ring of truth to me. Basically this story smells of the rabid anti-Muslim tosh that’s contributing to making us all crazier and crazier and more terrified of anyone who looks a bit Muslim. The source – the Daily Express, for a start. Not exactly what you would call a newspaper of record. The content – it doesn’t even make sense. Even if faced with an hysterically devout Muslim patient, who somehow had a pressing need to face Mecca, one bed turn would do the trick.

So this is what the news release on the hospital website says:

Media coverage – 4 December 2007
A number of media have today ran an entirely inaccurate story claiming that we have ordered staff to move Muslim patients’ beds to face towards Mecca. This has stemmed from the above press release. We wanted to make sure that you understand the correct position and this story is completely untrue.
Tracey McErlain-Burns, our chief nurse and director of patient experience, said: “Our statement has been wrongly interpreted. The Muslim Moulana at Dewsbury and District Hospital is holding internal workshops for nurses to help develop their cultural understanding. Nurses are not being removed from their duties to move patients’ beds towards Mecca. Moving patients’ beds for prayer five times a day has not been suggested as part of this workshop and staff have not been ordered to do this.
“In the context of responding to requests from patients and families, particularly when faced with a very ill patient, it is entirely reasonable that nurses consider all practical steps to meet a patient’s cultural or religious needs. This may include adjusting the position of the bed, or escorting the patient to the chapel or faith centre.”

So, it’s basically what they would do for a patient of any religion. You would naturally hope it includes not sending local priests to the beds of sick atheists.

This is tucked on to the end of their page about their 28 November story, Hospital Staff develop Cultural Understanding . This is a dull everyday account of the sort of diversity awareness that well-meaning public bodies provide for staff as a matter of course. The ideas they promulgate might seem a bit naive but – given that a member of the hospital staff was so incensed at this challenge to their prejudices to contact a national newspaper – is clearly well overdue.

Nurses and other staff at Dewsbury and District Hospital are taking part in a training course to develop their cultural understanding as part of The Mid Yorkshire Hospitals NHS Trust’s continued commitment to meet the privacy and dignity needs of all their patients.
The training has been introduced after Catherine Briggs, hospital matron at Dewsbury and District Hospital, met with members of the black and ethnic minority community including patients, local groups and a local GP to find out what staff can do to further improve patients’ experience

Ironic?

The Turner Prize has just been won by a man in teddy bear suit. 🙂

The Guardian said:

His film Sleeper, 154 minutes of footage of the artist wandering around a deserted German gallery disguised as a bear (but recognisable by his very particular gait), has baffled and entranced visitors to the Turner prize exhibition by turns….

Wallinger’s best-known work to date is perhaps his Ecce Homo, a statue of Christ that occupied Trafalgar Square’s fourth plinth in London in 1999. Other memorable works include Angel, in which Wallinger ascended and descended the escalator at Angel Underground station, London, reciting parts of the Bible, backwards.

I don’t suppose he gave his bear character a religiously sensitive name though.

Bad Science and Homeopathy

It seems this managed to slip under our radar recently, but the ever-entertaining and educational Ben Goldacre managed to get himself a piece in the Daily Mail, where he points out the madness of homeopathic treatments and the gibberish provided by its adherents.

As always, pretty much everything Ben writes is spot on, but what is breathtaking is the weirdness espoused by the novelist Jeanette Winterson (she is arguing the case “for” homeopathy). It is a good example of how people willingly allow their own gullibility to over power any sense of reason they may have once possessed:

Picture this. I am staying in a remote cottage in Cornwall without a car. I have a temperature of 102, spots on my throat, delirium, and a book to finish writing.

My desperate publisher suggests I call Hilary Fairclough, a homeopath who has practices in London and Penzance. She sends round a remedy called Lachesis, made from snake venom.

Four hours later I have no symptoms whatsoever. Dramatic stuff, and enough to convince me that while it might use snake venom, homeopathy is no snake oil designed for gullible hypochrondriacs.

Wow. What an amazing bit of evidence. Homeopathy must work… Quick, rush out and buy as much snake venom as you can, distil it until there is no venom left and only water and we can cure the cold. Amazing. What are you waiting for!

Actually hang on a second, there is some more evidence, this time from me. Dateline a few weeks ago:

Picture this. I am lying in my bed, sick, coughing and lethargic. I have had the shivers for a couple of days now. The cold sweats are really getting me down and every bone in my body aches. I am at the point where I think I am going to die in the next few minutes. Eventually, through sheer exhaustion I fall asleep.

Four hours later, I wake up and I have no symptoms whatsoever. Dramatic stuff and enough to convince me that things like the cold and flu are short term viral infections which can normally be overcome by a reasonably healthy immune system. Also, when they are overcome, you actually get better.

Just goes to show, taking a homeopathic treatment often has the same effect as not doing anything at all. Colds and Flu are good examples. Even the medical treatments dont really “cure” them – things like paracetamol and phenylephedrine mostly just relive the symptoms and make it easier for your body to fight for itself. Often medicine, while making the symptoms much more manageable, will make the infection last a bit longer.

You see, homeopathy is actually snake oil designed for gullible hypochondriacs. Unfortunately, Jeanette Winterson is one of these gullible hypochondriacs.

It is also interesting that, in the best habits of homeopaths and their followers, Jeanette resorts to misusing sciencey-sounding words. “Nano” gets used a lot, even though it doesn’t mean what she thinks it means – mostly because “nano-particles” sounds cool and exciting and makes it seem like there is some actual research behind the crap.

Demonstrating a wonderful lack of scientific background, she writes:

Objections to homeopathy begin with what are viewed as the impossible dilutions of the remedies, so that only nano amounts of the original active substance remain.

Yet our recent discoveries in the world of the very small point to a whole new set of rules for the behaviour of nano-quantities. We are discovering that the properties of materials change as their size reaches the nano-scale.

In a solvent, such as water, nano particles can remain suspended, neither floating nor sinking, but permeating the solution. Such particles are also able to pass through cell walls, and they can cause biochemical change.

We do not know whether this has a bearing on homeopathic dilutions, but it may offer a clue.

Head spinning stuff. If only “nano amounts” of the “active” substance did remain, there may be some credibility in what homeopaths claims. The fact is, you can detect “nano amounts.” Nano amounts seems to imply a 1 part in 1×10^-9 dilution, homeopathic treatments are of the order of 1 part in 1×10^60 dilution. There is a huge difference (even ignoring the problem of the sign). She is trying to allude to quantum mechanics, but is doing so in a new-agey sort of manner which is, putting it mildly, nonsense. I have one message for Jeanette (on the off chance she ever reads this blog…): Stick to writing novels, if you really must voice your support for snake oil homeopathy, then please do so using your excellent command of language and literature; please do not try to talk science without learning a lot more.

Sadly, she is not alone in this range of mad ideas. In the comments, “Kate” writes:

I am a firm believer in homeopathy and have been for quite some time. Working in a medical environment, I have been an easy target for ridicule but I wish the NHS was able to include proven and well documented complementary therapies more than is available at present.

I hope she is lying about working in a medical environment (unless she is a receptionist or someone with no access to patient care). Ironically, the NHS is able to provide proven and well documentary therapies. The problem is homeopathy is proven to be crap.

Cyber-smugness

Do you shop for clothes? You don’t pick your own cotton or gather wool from hedges? Colour the fibres with dyes you’ve crafted by hand from natural substances? Then spin it for weeks to get some thread? Then knit trousers or weave your t-shirts on a loom? Hah. I suspected that.

I assume you hunt and gather all your food? Prepare all your meals from the ground up? You don’t do that either?

Idiots. Clearly, you have only yourself to blame if your clothes are infected with smallpox or anthrax and your food is infested with deadly puffer-fish poison and laced with a radioactive form of cyanide.

Do you obtain your own water and do your own sewage treatment? No again? Whose fault is it if you get cholera, then?

Sound familiar? This is the response from some fraction of the geek world to the cyber-security problems of mere mortals.

The Register had a post about Google poisoning.

Hackers re-poison Google search results
Hackers have responded to a purge of malicious links within search results by Google with a fresh effort to subvert the search giant’s page rank system.

This links to an earlier post

Miscreants subvert search results to punt malware
……The tactic involved gaming search engines’ ranking systems by automatically posting links to malign sites in blog and forum posts. Hackers automated this link spamming process using networks of compromised zombie PCs……

This is pretty close to my heart as I have identified this happening on this blog over the past few days – including 12 hours on Thursday when I couldn’t even see any sites on the blogs server, let alone post to the blog or read T_W’s posts. A 6 month-old post was being constantly hit by Google searches for 2 products which definitely were never mentioned in it – some dubious UK Insurance company and an IP sc4nn3r. (Me trying to stop those terms actually coming up in Google.) By some miraculous coincidence, Akismet was reporting large amounts of blogspam by companies that claimed to offer those very things…..

I googled, read forum posts and looked at geek sites for a day and decided it was a CSRF attack or something, although, even if this was right, the only solutions I could find would involve days of applying half-understood*nix techniques to a server that I don’t have any admin rights over.

So the comments on a recent Register post really got my back up. They basically say that anyone who gets attacked by one of these things is an idiot.

Plus they are too idle to apply basic security procedures.

E.g:

Remind me again….

What the point of that comment is? I’m guessing pretty much everyone reading this is sufficiently tech savvy NOT to be the victim of stuff like this? and Not “get their life ruined by this stuff”?
And when you say “a BIT more difficult, you mean… “a complete arse!”

Stored Passwords
By Anonymous CowardPosted Saturday 10th November 2007 13:42 GMT
The whole scheme worked because the victims stored their passwords on their computer rather than in their heads. Regardless of the storage scheme, stored passwords are a security vulnerability to any software running on the storage computer.
Once again, the scheme is a low-pass filter and only nailed the stupid.

Yes, Gerry…

…I am sure that if every idiot and grandparent in the united states was running Linux there would be far fewer security problems.

Well, no. Every day, pages of the Register have stories about how major global organisations, with expensive IT security departments, get taken. Today’s Times Online has a story claiming that the head of the British security forces had written to 300 CEs and security heads of top British companies warning of cyberattacks from China. Are these addressees too ignorant  to take elementary precautions to protect their networks? I suspect not.

So how do the Linux nerds get so smug? The assumption is that you need a level of knowledge that goes beyond the average postgraduate computer security course just to have a broadband service and keep a blog. Plus, you need to live so leisurely a life that you have nothing else to think about than remembering 48 16-digit alphanumeric randomly-generated passwords. Alternatively, give up all your rights to run any forbidden programs to your ISP (other comments on same page)

This is absurd (see above) as well as patronising. Which is where I came in with the suggestion that some techies had better look to the general division of labour before they assume that the rest of us are to blame every time we come up against the sharp end of cybercrime.

Toy Story in Sudan

Chad/Darfur/Sudan. Scene of an ongoing and pretty incomprehensible disaster. In June, Save the Children reported that

Over 70 children under the age of five die every day in Darfur

(It’s a fair bet that about 30 of them are probably named Mohammed, of course.)

As Alun pointed out in a comment here, we should maybe start looking at what lies behind the ludicrous Sudanese Toy Story?

I’d like to put all the blame for this on religion, but, I’m something of a materialist and religion is so often just the gloss on real-world struggles over power and wealth.

The UN has reached agreement on sending in a peace-keeping force, according to Associated Press.

U.N. peacekeeping chief Jean-Marie Guehenno warned the Security Council on Tuesday that the Sudanese government is putting up numerous obstacles to the deployment of the so-called “hybrid” force that could destroy the effectiveness of the joint AU-U.N. mission.

Reuters reports that the Sudanese are blaming the UN for the delays. Maybe I am biased but I tend to see the UN point of view as likely to be more accurate. According to Jean-Marie Guehenno, head of the U.N. peacekeeping force, Khartoum is putting conditions which would render the UN force unable to achieve anything.

International experts estimate some 200,000 have died and 2.5 million been driven from their homes in almost five years.
The International Criminal Court has issued arrest warrants for a junior government minister and a militia leader accused of colluding in war crimes (More from Reuters)

Spanish Inquisitor made some excellent points about the disaster that is the Congo and got some great thought-provoking comments, including ones from the Exterminator, XanderG , Philly Chief and John Evolutionary Middleman the other day.

Although they were discussing the Congo, the issues they talked about apply to the man-made disasters that are increasingly consuming the African continent.

Most of the commenters (being Americans) felt that the USA should do something, although the Iraq debacle didn’t seem like a great model. PhillyChief said, somewhat ironically, “Too bad there’s no oil in Africa.” Tim Little pointed out that there is plenty of oil in Africa in general and a lot of mineral wealth in the Congo.

I have referred to this debate because it expresses where many of us are in relation to the horrors of the world. If we live in the rich countries, we don’t know enough about what is happening elsewhere. These are places we only hear about in terms of war, genocide or political turmoil.

A comment posted here on T_W’s first teddy bear post said:

This is appaling – if she is not freed today I will definately boycot anything Sudanese.

However, I doubt you can find anything Sudanese to boycott. These countries liek Sudan and the Congo are on the very edge of disintegration. And the people are turning on each other, as any people tend to do in the face of social disaster. The insane Islamic stuff is just a part of this process of disintegration.

So given the futility of applying more normal means (like boycotts and tough words at the embassy) of expressing international outrage over the situation in Darfur, all that’s left is the UN.

My feeling here is that the hapless British teacher has been used in the most cynical manner to stir up nationalist outrage, by reference to religion. Governments in Muslim countries are well aware of the ideological power of an appeal to Islam, which provides an opportunity to gather international support in the name of an (imagined) attack on the Prophet.

To misquote Dr Johnson, religion, combined with patriotism, is the last refuge of the scoundrel.

However, the technique is likely to backfire drastically. The rich countries have already gone so far down the road of an inability to distinguish Islam from rabid fundamentalism that most Western populations are starting to assume that any appearance of possible Middle-Eastern descent (as in the case of Jean-Charles de Mendes) implies that an individual is a terrorist.
People in the UK have responded to the Toy Story case with unbelieving shock and anger.

As an irrelevant aside, the suggestion that she was being culturally insensitive and should have known better is utterly mistaken. She was teaching in a Christian school, ffs. Any muslim parents who sent their kids there would have had to accept that they were getting taught by non-muslims. She was clearly English, so she brought her own culture and customs. that is part of the experience of immigrants across the whole world. It’s pretty clear – except to the neo-fascists who use anti-immigration as a rallying cry to bigots – that we all have much to learn (accept/reject) from other people’s backgrounds.

In any case, I can imagine few Muslim families in the UK would stop their children calling their soft toys whatever they chose. Suddenly, not calling your toys after muslim religious figures has become an article of Islamic faith. Have the five pillars of Islamnow become six?

Wikipedia says

The Five Pillars of Islam (Arabic: أركان الإسلام) is the term given to the five duties incumbent on every Muslim. These duties are Shahadah (profession of faith), Salah (ritual prayer), Zakah (alms tax), Sawm (fasting during Ramadan), and Hajj (pilgrimage to Mecca)

If I were to add “non-blasphemous naming of soft toys” to the wiki entry, I suspect I’d have a fatwah on my ass before I’d left the page.
