Pipex is Still Terrible

Well, any long time readers of this blog will know I detest Pipex (my ISP – I refuse to link to them). It is terrible. It has abysmal customer service and for most of the summer I was without a connection at all. When they finally got round to fixing it what speed the ADSL used to have was truly gone.

Sadly, thanks to the terms and conditions the ISP is allowed to impose, I am obliged to remain with them for another four months at least. This is gutting when the net connection is barely faster than dial up.

I have spent the first three days of this month trying to connect to Thinkbroadband.com to see what my actual transfer speeds were. However, the connection was too slow for the speedtest to run. How bad is that? Fortunately, today things have picked up a little so here is this months graph:

Graph of transfer speeds using the UK ISP Pipex

What is really shocking about this graph, is not just the massive downwards trend it shows, but the fact that the really slow connections aren’t even on it. This graph only shows when the connection speeds were fast enough for me to get the speedtester to run! Very soon the early “fast” days will drop off the graph and it will just be flatlined crap speeds.

It is infuriating that, in this day and age, it seems impossible to get a consistently fast data connection. I am paying for a service which advertises itself as an “8mb connection” yet I barely scrape over 2mb. As soon as I can get out of this contract I am going with Virgin Media Cable broadband.

I have been with Pipex for about five years now – until very recently they were wonderful. I would have recommended them to anyone. However, in the summer they were taken over by Tiscali (who I have hated in the past) and things have plummeted like a lead weight.

Why in the name of Toutatis would Tiscali (who already had a reputation for being crap) buy a good ISP and then turn it to rubbish? What on earth is the point of that? Are these people mad? (Note: Virgin did the same with Blueyonder/Telewest…)

Anyway, before I get ranting about the stupidity of corporate takeovers, I will end here with the exhortation that you never, ever recommend Pipex (or Tiscali) to anyone you have even a passing regard for. Terrible ISP is an understatement.

Data insecurity

Th British government is planning to make the distribution of hacker tools into a crime, according to a post on the Register This is an amendment to the Computer Misuse Act, included in the Police and Justice Act 2006, but unlikely to become law until May, 2008.

Hmm, hacker tools? What does that mean? On first thought, it must include anything you can do on a PC. What about Visual Basic for example? Any Unix Distro? Windows?

OK. Let’s assume that all the standard OSes and applications won’t be included. What about relatively innocuous programs like snort and Ethereal, which let you monitor what’s happening on your network? Plus all the other programs you might use to secure a system – password crackers and stress testers.

The Register points out that many “hacker” tools are used by sysadmins to secure networks.

The problem is that anything from nmap through wireshark to perl can be used for both legitimate and illicit purposes, in much the same way that a hammer can be used for putting up shelving or breaking into a car.

Apparently, the government has stepped back a bit from this mad direction by adding something about the intent to use the software, after industry concern, but the Register says that it’s still going ahead with the plan “to prosecute people who distribute a tool, such as nmap, that’s subsequently abused by hackers.”

LightBlueTouchpaper site says:

the complexity surrounds “distribution”, if a good guy runs a website and a lot of bad people download the tool from it, has the good guy committed an offence?

The point is well expressed on Spy-Blog which also draws attention to the shockingly poor global rank of the UK for privacy:

The United Kingdom, is still, to our shame and to public fear, ranked in the worst category, i.e. an “endemic surveillance society” alongside the Russian Federation, China, the USA and Malaysia etc.
The incompetent Labour government has managed to further increase the size and scope of its “surveillance state” activities, without any effective transparent checks or balances. They have not achieved any extra “security” as a result of this snooping and spying on the public, but they have further lost public confidence and trust in centralised government bureaucratic systems

These “anti-hacker” activities seem particularly poorly timed, given that the past few weeks have seen the most crucial private data of millions of UK citizens’ having been randomly distributed in the UK and even the USA.

And, oddly, not due to the ultimate cunning of nefarious hax0rs. Due solely to the incompetence of government agencies and subcontractors. Hmm.

For example- this story from spy-blogbuggers belief. MI5 emailalert sign-up shambles

Astonishingly, MI5, the Security Service, part of whose remit is supposed to be giving protection advice against electronic attacks over the internet, is sending all our personal details (forename, surname and email address) unencrypted to commercial third party e-mail marketing and tracking companies which are physically and legally in the jurisdiction of the United States of America, and is even not bothering to make use of the SSL / TLS encrypted web forms and processing scripts which are already available to them..

Flickr is soooo last year

It seems that the mighty Web 2.0 stalwart Flickr isn’t as futuristic as people may have once thought. Flickr seems to be stuck in 2007.

Flickr Stats - seem to have lots of comments but no visitors…

Now I am far from a flickr expert, so if anyone knows how it is possible to get 132 comments without anyone visiting your pictures please let me know.

Wikipediaphile inconsequentia

Wikipedia’s demon spawn has been dozens of internet encyclopaedias. Here’s a selection of the encyclopaedisphere’s entries on “God.” I will, naturally, stick to the sillier, crazier or more scurrilous end of the encyclopaedic spectrum.

But first Wikipedia itself, which says

God (IPA: /ɡɒd/) most commonly refers to the deity worshipped by followers of monotheistic and monolatrist religions, whom they believe to be the creator and ruler of the universe.

Hmm, odd grammatical construction, but who I am to criticise, given “the beam in mine own eye” (Source: somewhere in the bible. Bugger, I should have stuck with “cast the first stone”)

Arssepedia, the British Army Rumour Serviice wiki is a bit more forthright, spraying generalised anti-religion ammo, though it’s relatively soft on Christianity.

..the orthodox Christian perspective of The Big “G” views the ‘man upstairs’ as a generally benign sort of bloke who quite likes us on the quiet. There are a quite a few flavours of Christianity:…. They all hate each other to a greater or lesser extent and consider all other Christian groups a bunch of splitters and heretics..

Its Jesus page is more entertaining. It starts with

The Big man’s son…
… he is also the Big man himself…
… and something about an imaginary friend?

Sickipedia has lots of gags of the type that make you think “Well, it’s almost like a joke except for the not-being-funny bit.” I do like this one:

When I was a kid I used to pray every night for a new bike. Then I realised that The Lord doesn’t work that way, so I stole one and asked him to forgive me.

Conservapedia (remember these people complain that Wikipedia is not objective enough….) says:

“In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.”
The word “God” is the general term used to refer to the Creator of the universe. What we know about God comes from three main categories: creation, conscience, and revelation. God has revealed himself in several ways, including through the Bible.
Attributes of God include but are not limited to Wisdom, Infinitude, Sovereignty, Holiness, Trinity, Omniscience, Faithfulness, Love, Omnipotence, Self-existence, Self-sufficiency, Justice, Immutability, Mercy, Eternal, Goodness, Gracious, and Omnipresence. These attributes all work in complete and perfect harmony with one another.
God exercises eternal and righteous judgment of the wicked in hell, because of an inherent problem in the human heart, namely Sin. According to the Bible, the sacrifice of Jesus Christ on the cross of calvary and then resurrection, is God’s merciful and gracious response to the problem of the human heart.

You assume they don’t have a facility for posting stuff like the notes on Wikipedia that say something like “this post is contested, it may not be objective”…

The next entry gets in this list for its exhuberant wackiness despite not really being a Wikipedia evil twin, although it was tagged “god” and is called “ipedia” (That spurred me to look at ipedia.com. Don’t squander any life-force energy by directing your left-clicking finger at this. It’s an advert site, mainly advertising encyclopedias.)

It’s a video from Meyers Bend Pentecostal Church, entitled the Apostolic something or other (Don’t make me watch it again) about a miraculous leg healing, the description for which says:

This wonderful Lady was healed by the power of God! Luke 6:38 (NKJV) Give, and it will be given to you: good measure, pressed down, shaken together, and running over will be put into your bosom. For with the same measure that you use, it will be measured back to you. 2 Corinthians 9:5-10 (NKJV) 5Therefore I thought it necessary to exhort the brethren to go to you ahead of time, and prepare your generous gift beforehand, which you had previously promised, that it may be ready as a matter..

No idea what that means but it’s creepy.

I thought Creedopedia looked promising, as Google took me straight to a Brigham Young University Jerusalem Center page. That should have been mildly entertaining but it’s definitely off topic… No mention of “God” I could spot. The reference is only still here because the site’s called Creedopedia.

Because, I’m scraping the ipedia barrel by now. This is the next link to Darth_Ipedia:

Darth Ipedia was a Dark Lord of the Sith known for dedicating his entire life to studying, collecting, and organizing arcane bits of useless information. No one ever had the heart to tell him his sources weren’t terribly trustworthy, except at the moment of his death at the hands of Darth Awesome. When he realized that all of his knowledge was complete lies, and that his life’s work had been the greatest fallacy since Crystal Pepsi, he is said to have remarked, “Meh.”

No mention of God then, but I suppose there’s a lesson for me in that last one (in bold)…

I’m now wondering what part of “god *ipedia” Google didn’t understand to give me thousands of links that just don’t come near even mentioning “god.” The “god ” bit obviously. Well, maybe Google has done that Kurzweil Singularity thing and become sentient after all, but it’s become an atheist.

Cyber-smugness

Do you shop for clothes? You don’t pick your own cotton or gather wool from hedges? Colour the fibres with dyes you’ve crafted by hand from natural substances? Then spin it for weeks to get some thread? Then knit trousers or weave your t-shirts on a loom? Hah. I suspected that.

I assume you hunt and gather all your food? Prepare all your meals from the ground up? You don’t do that either?

Idiots. Clearly, you have only yourself to blame if your clothes are infected with smallpox or anthrax and your food is infested with deadly puffer-fish poison and laced with a radioactive form of cyanide.

Do you obtain your own water and do your own sewage treatment? No again? Whose fault is it if you get cholera, then?

Sound familiar? This is the response from some fraction of the geek world to the cyber-security problems of mere mortals.

The Register had a post about Google poisoning.

Hackers re-poison Google search results
Hackers have responded to a purge of malicious links within search results by Google with a fresh effort to subvert the search giant’s page rank system.

This links to an earlier post

Miscreants subvert search results to punt malware
……The tactic involved gaming search engines’ ranking systems by automatically posting links to malign sites in blog and forum posts. Hackers automated this link spamming process using networks of compromised zombie PCs……

This is pretty close to my heart as I have identified this happening on this blog over the past few days – including 12 hours on Thursday when I couldn’t even see any sites on the blogs server, let alone post to the blog or read T_W’s posts. A 6 month-old post was being constantly hit by Google searches for 2 products which definitely were never mentioned in it – some dubious UK Insurance company and an IP sc4nn3r. (Me trying to stop those terms actually coming up in Google.) By some miraculous coincidence, Akismet was reporting large amounts of blogspam by companies that claimed to offer those very things…..

I googled, read forum posts and looked at geek sites for a day and decided it was a CSRF attack or something, although, even if this was right, the only solutions I could find would involve days of applying half-understood*nix techniques to a server that I don’t have any admin rights over.

So the comments on a recent Register post really got my back up. They basically say that anyone who gets attacked by one of these things is an idiot.

Plus they are too idle to apply basic security procedures.

E.g:

Remind me again….
By Stone Fox Posted Saturday 10th November 2007 13:28 GMT
What the point of that comment is? I’m guessing pretty much everyone reading this is sufficiently tech savvy NOT to be the victim of stuff like this? and Not “get their life ruined by this stuff”?
And when you say “a BIT more difficult, you mean… “a complete arse!”

Stored Passwords
By Anonymous CowardPosted Saturday 10th November 2007 13:42 GMT
The whole scheme worked because the victims stored their passwords on their computer rather than in their heads. Regardless of the storage scheme, stored passwords are a security vulnerability to any software running on the storage computer.
Once again, the scheme is a low-pass filter and only nailed the stupid.

Yes, Gerry…
By David WiernickiPosted Saturday 10th November 2007 14:09 GMT
…I am sure that if every idiot and grandparent in the united states was running Linux there would be far fewer security problems.

Well, no. Every day, pages of the Register have stories about how major global organisations, with expensive IT security departments, get taken. Today’s Times Online has a story claiming that the head of the British security forces had written to 300 CEs and security heads of top British companies warning of cyberattacks from China. Are these addressees too ignorant  to take elementary precautions to protect their networks? I suspect not.

So how do the Linux nerds get so smug? The assumption is that you need a level of knowledge that goes beyond the average postgraduate computer security course just to have a broadband service and keep a blog. Plus, you need to live so leisurely a life that you have nothing else to think about than remembering 48 16-digit alphanumeric randomly-generated passwords. Alternatively, give up all your rights to run any forbidden programs to your ISP (other comments on same page)

This is absurd (see above) as well as patronising. Which is where I came in with the suggestion that some techies had better look to the general division of labour before they assume that the rest of us are to blame every time we come up against the sharp end of cybercrime.

Panorama and WiFi

Background: Shown on BBC, Panorama bills itself as “The Worlds Longest Running Investigative TV Show.” It has a history of “investigating” current affairs issues and is, generally, fairly watchable. Like all “Investigative” shows, it likes to hype things up and often crosses the line about what is acceptable.

Despite this almost regular massage of the truth, lots of people take everything it says as gospel. In local debates, claims made on Panorama are often repeated while people demand their local authorities to take action.

A few months ago (May) there was an example of this, when Panorama showed an investigation into the “dangers” of WiFi. As with most of these things, it was utter nonsense. A few talking head scientists were trotted out for their 15 minutes of fame on the basis that they were willing to imply WiFi signals would make you grow ears on your forehead (or something equally stupid).

Although the program was crap, it fuelled a significant amount of debate both at the national and local level. People are still demanding WiFi connections be removed from schools, electro-sensitivity gets regular mentions in the press (and in BadScience…) and so on.

So, it was somewhat pleasing today to hear that: (From BBC News)

The BBC has upheld complaints against an edition of the current affairs programme Panorama.

It is a bit more watered down than I would have liked, basically it is just admitting that Panorama were very selective in the talking heads they went for and failed to properly represent the scientific opinion.

On Friday, the ECU [Editorial Complaints Unit] said it had been “legitimate” for Panorama to examine concerns about wi-fi raised by chairman of the Health Protection Agency Sir William Stewart.

But it said the programme included only one contributor, Prof Repacholi, who disagreed with Sir William, compared with three scientists and a number of other speakers who supported him.

“This gave a misleading impression of the state of scientific opinion on the issue,” the ECU said.

“In addition, Prof Repacholi’s contribution was presented in a context which suggested to viewers that his scientific independence was in question, whereas the other scientists were presented uncritically.

So, not quite the resounding criticism I wanted, but a start.

The depressing part of this is that nothing will change and the damage has been done. Panorama has quite high viewing figures, the episode is out and available for the terminally insane to reinforce their nonsense with and, basically, an apology hidden in BBC News does nothing to reverse that. It seems the BBC has decided to respond to this upheld complaint by:

Panorama said it was now planning a meeting to explore issues of balance and fair dealing with contributors in relation to scientific and medical topics.

Blah, blah. Meaningless weasel words. Nothing will change. No one will be told off. But they will waste a few hours drinking coffee as they “explore” a concept they seem completely ignorant of. What a waste of the taxpayers money.

A bit more Techno-babble

T_W’s last post linked to a salient post which showed charts of Internet traffic for certain phrases, with a fascinating plunge for a fortnight in early November. He did post this yesterday.

I looked at Technorati’s authority for salient. He wasn’t credited with a visible recent link from our blog – despite getting a clear link from us IN THE MAIN TEXT, rather than the sidebar and despite him having made comments, which should have counted as links because we strip the nofollow tag.

In fact, according to Technorati, salient’s last blog post was 19 days ago. I count 5 or 6 since then. But lo, I now get this when I try to re-click on the Technorati censorship newest post using the blogger “newer posts” function on the site Technorati.

Technorati’s Censorship?
expression as battle with the enemy.

Wow. There’s a wormhole on salient’s site. He’s gone back in time. No wonder his post has disappeared. It won’t be written for nearly 40 years.

Stop, salient!! This is too dangerous. You may stop the whole Internet from getting invented, by snapping a butterfly’s wings in the Amazon.

More on my annoyance with the Blogroll

I was going to write this as a comment on the aside I made last night, however it seems to be a bit long winded for that (not to mention, the aside was supposed to be a bit of a quick rant! 🙂 ).

The previous post, resulted in several good comments from salient, heather and Mana which are well worth reading. Following their responses, I felt there were a couple of points I wanted to clarify – mainly to make my position on the matter clear, rather than actually disagreeing with anything they have said.

First off, my rant which started this was more the result of frustration than anything else. The blogroll is excellent and it has allowed both Heather and myself to discover some excellent, well written and entertaining blogs we would have otherwise missed. When this blog first joined it, we got two excellent advantages from membership:

  1. Every time some one on the blogroll made a post, Technorati granted a “link” (authority) to our blog if we were visible on their blogroll widget. It was this which propelled us from almost no technorati “authority” to dizzying heights (albeit short lived).
  2. Every time we made new posts, the **New next to our name drove traffic to our site. This resulted in lots of new traffic for the site, new readers, new commenters and new posts agreeing / disagreeing with our own.

Over time, Technorati removed the first advantage and now it seems Blogrolling are in the process of removing the second advantage. Over the last few days, the blogroll widget we display in the sidebar has done nothing but direct traffic away from our blog to other blogs (according to Feedburner outgoing links stats) – as we have not shown up on anyone else’s pages we have had no inbound traffic.

In reality, for the last three days now the blogroll has really been nothing but a free linking service to other atheist blogs. While I don’t really have a problem with that, it is a touch annoying that there is no reciprocation and, more importantly, we have no say (here at WhyDontYou) over which atheist blogs get linked to. As it stands, we would be better off replacing the blogrolling blogroll with a static blogroll where we chose which blogs were listed (note: at the moment, we have both).

While I am not, at the moment, thinking of removing the blogroll from here (and I wouldn’t advocate others remove it either – it is a good thing!), I do hope that someone with the requisite technical knowledge can come up with a solution to the problems. There must be a sufficiently IT literate atheist out there (or are they all on the sites which seem to always be on the blogroll!)

As further clarification, in my previous aside I was being very subjective when I complained that the good blogs seem to be missed out by the blogroll. I was, in an angry and frustrated manner, trying to complain that (often) if you visit all 25 blogs from the blogroll which should have “new” posts (i.e. are marked **New), you often find little more than a YouTube clip with no commentary or even no new posts. Yes, there are some brilliant blogs on the blogroll which I make the effort to visit as often as I remember, but there are a few that are barely readable.

In a nutshell (sorry for being longwinded about this!), the biggest thing which annoys me is the erratic nature of it all. For example, Pharyngula (an excellent blog) seems to be permanently on the blogroll (*) – which is understandable as he makes ten posts for every one a mere mortal can generate. However, WhyDontYou hasn’t been seen on it for the last three days, despite us having half a dozen new posts. I am sure there is no specific discrimination against this particular blog, I just wish I could work out how to solve it…

As a related aside, salient has an excellent post where he has looked at technorati stats for various words. Well worth checking out, and it seems to identify a global, significant, drop in blog traffic over the period 11 – 17 Nov. This is mirrors in the stats for visitors here, they plummeted around this period. Did the internet break for a few days?

(*) Comically, I have just looked and for the first time in ages, Pharyngula isn’t on the blogroll. Bah. Toutatis and Loki have conspired together to make me look silly. Hopefully he will be back before you read this… 🙂

Meme and morality

Thanks to Enonomi for the “earliest memory” meme tag. T_W has made so many posts today, it seemed churlish to make him do this one. (Though that was before I saw that he had insulted my typo-fuelled grammar.:-p) All the ame, I admit I’ve been dodging the responsibility – following the pattern of a lifetime.

This is mainly because my earliest memories are really boring. I was a baby, ffs. There’s only so much you can say about it. It’s a bit like telling people about some great dream you had. You had to be there…

I played in our apartment. I played in the garden and the park. My dad took me riding on the cross-bar of his bike, sometimes to feed sugar cubes to a terrifyingly huge and friendly horse. I can remember the environment in great detail but I can’t remember anyone’s faces. (I was a self-absorbed child)

I got a sister the day after my second birthday. I was pleased, assuming this was like a birthday present, a new doll that did stuff. Disappointingly, the stuff turned out to be crying and sleeping. I got used to ignoring her.

A professional photographer came, when my sister was a few months old. She cried nonstop and tried to crawl under the table. The photographer was sent away. I was ready to kill her. I wanted my picture taken and it seemed unjust to me that her wailing could stop me getting photographed. Even worse, they had made me wear a hideous cardigan that my grandmother had knitted. It seemed doubly unjust that, even though I’d made the massive sacrifice of agreeing to wear the ugly cardigan, I still wasn’t getting photographed. (I was a very vain child.)

A few months after my sister was born, we moved to a house. Joy! The phone was in a spare room, away from adult attention. I spent most of my unobserved time on it, cold-calling random numbers, chatting (expensively) for hours with anyone who answered. Until one woman demanded to speak to my mother and I was banned from the room with the phone.

I was three years and 3 months old. My mother was 7 months pregnant. She was moving a piano and it fell on her. (Aside. A baby grand piano, ffs? Where did it come from? Nobody played it. My mother sometimes claimed she could but she never tried to. Although, a year or so later, she did involve it when she practised kicking her own height -with me standing on the piano stool, holding my hand out at to mark her height and protesting constantly at the embarrassing stupidity of the enterprise. Until she accidentally kicked me in the head. I was knocked to the floor. saw stars. After which, I refused to play any more part in this demented practice.)

Trapped under the piano and forced into labour by its weight, my mother sent me to the phone to call the emergency ambulance. Somehow, I managed it. I can remember being furious at the injustice. “They won’t let me use the phone when I want to, but they expect me to use the phone whenever it suits them!” (As I said, I was a self-absorbed child.)

My father was stuck with two babies for a few weeks, while my mother and newly-emerged brother were in hospital. Every day, my dad felt obliged to come up with some new amusement. He took us to the circus (I loved every second, except for the frighteningly unfunny clowns), to the theatre, to the mountains, to the beach. (It was December.) It was great. Bah, my mother and brother finally came home and everyday life became dull and circus-free again.

My parents arranged for another photographer to take a picture of all 3 kids. But I was really annoyed by the stupid hairstyle I had and there was no way I was willingly getting my picture taken with it. It was worse than the cardigan because it was part of ME. (No one listened to my explanations of why this hairstyle was unacceptable.) I sat in the garden with a pair of scissors and cut the fringe that I wanted. I still remember the random screaming when I was spotted…. Plus my own fury at the injustice of my parents thinking that there could be anything dangerous in me cutting away hair that fell across my eyes. (The unfairness! As if I don’t know what I am doing! They treat me like a baby!)

They were being so irrational. Hair dragged back straight back from the forehead was patently ugly. No one would acknowledge this, despite my best efforts to educate them. I wanted a fringe. Scissors cut hair. Ergo, I had to cut my own hair. That should have been self-evident. If only adults weren’t so irrational….

Even worse, my mother dragged me to a hairdresser’s to get the fringe cut straight. So, although she had had to give way on the fringe, as a result of my direct action, I ended up with a stupid fringe that didn’t fit the image I was aiming for at all. It was actually even worse than having no fringe. It was way too short! It was cut comically straight across. What a stupid thing to do. Were they mad? Were they deliberately making a laughing stock of me? I kicked off so vehemently that the photography session got postponed another couple of years. (Not just vain but self-willed.)

I played complex games with neighbourhood kids – all usually involving homemade and ineffective bows and arrows and twig swords, with a lot of sycamore tree climbing and/or hiding in bushes. Princesses and outlaws and swineherds and pirates and fairies and witches were all involved. I collected bits of wild plants, sometimes looking for ways to synthesise wierd poisons to hide inside apples, sometimes trying to prove the existence of four-leaf clovers and sometimes trying to work out how you could make perfume from flowers. I was always grazing my knees. I got several infected cuts and insect bites, which ended up in frequent visits to the emergency room.

I’ve posted this stuff, despite it being pretty boring to anyone except me, because (a) these really are my earliest memories (up to about four years old) and I somehow feel I should respond honestly to the meme if I agreed to do it and (b) because I think it disputes a lot of (even my) assumptions about toddlers.

There was a fair bit of stuff in the newspapers about research that showed that 6 month olds could tell “nice” and “nasty” apart. Set aside the fact that it doesn’t really show that anyway. It’s been variously puffed as “proof” either that morality is genetically innate or that it comes direct from God.

Research led by Kiley Hamlin, a graduate student at Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut, shows that babies less than a year old can judge the niceness or nastiness of others, even when watching events that don’t directly affect them. The researchers made the discovery using nothing more high-tech than a simple puppet show.
After watching the show, the babies, aged either six months or ten months, instinctively preferred ‘nice’ characters over less helpful ones. This kind of skill may be useful in helping them learn the right values as their social awareness develops later in childhood.(from the report in Nature)

The problem with most of the pop science conclusions from this stuff is that it it often assumes that babies are blank slates. However, by the time a baby is old enough to look at activities and communicate any preference, it’s been studying us intensively for months. It’s learned pretty much how to live in our world. It’s already learned lots of things about us that we don’t acknowledge to ourselves. So, how can anyone draw conclusions about innateness from the responses of socialised beings?

In any case, just because babies prefer people they think won’t harm them, how can you conclude that they will later decide to follow the behaviour of the “nice” ones? As presented in nature, this seems a one-dimensional view of how we develop a moral sense.

Maybe morality is encoded in some part of the human genome. There is some interesting research on this, discussed in New Scientist in August.

It seems we are born with a sense of right and wrong, and that no amount of religious indoctrination will change our most basic moral instincts.(from New Scientist)

The research recently reported in Nature can contribute to this but it doesn’t bear the interpretative weight being heaped upon it.

Looking at my own earliest memories, I can see that they come from a time that I could speak, even though they are mostly non-verbal and triggered by how I felt. I would assume that the developed characteristics of a toddler who can speak probably aren’t much different from a baby who can’t. I can’t imagine any way of testing this idea.

These anecdotes express a “me” that I can recognise as an individual. I would even admit that they express aspects of me that remain pretty well unchanged, for good and ill: rage at perceived injustice, excessive concern with aesthetics – especially the aesthetics of how I appear, the capacity to interpret events mainly in terms of how they affect me, love of stories, even the obsession with using reason to reach conclusions combined with a total failure to understand why everybody else doesn’t always see things the same way.

If a baby sees someone doing something unpleasant, they avoid that person. That makes sense, as the person whom they saw might turn that nastiness on them. This response seems to come from a sense of self-preservation – an evolutionary imperative -rather than being a result of babies making “moral judgements”. (Although, granted, babies’ capacity to scream until their parents want to cut their heads off to stop their mouths making noise contradicts the self-preservation bit.)

Who to tag? This is one of those memes where people might prefer not to get tagged but might feel it’s bad blogtiquette to refuse. At the same time, other bloggers might have really good things to say and might feel slighted at not getting any tags. Apart from these considerations, I am too lazy to pick a few names and check they haven’t already been tagged or actually done it. I prefer to read any blogs that I might tag for pleasure rather than research purposes.

So, I’m going to do what the Exterminator did. He said:

If you haven’t been tagged already, and want to be, either consider yourself so, or send me an email and I’ll make the tag formal for the Atheosphere record books.(from nomorehornets blog)

Plagiarising good ideas is probably the way to go, so I’m just lifting this bit. Replace email with comment and apply it here.

I think I’ll be a bit more specific, as well, though. If you have some interesting first memory, definitely consider yourself tagged. I’ll put a link to any interesting responses I came across (I’ve already mentioned the Exterminator and enonomi. Their posts are good reads.) And if I think of any specific blogs I really want to tag with this and they haven’t already done it, I might add them to this post..

Junior High

Hat tip to Gullibity blog for a link to a site that tests the reading age that your blog is aimed at.

So…when I did this blog readability test I was surprised at it’s assessment of the reading level needed to make sense of what I was writing. The widget says you are at Genius level if you read Gullibility – WOW!. Just a note, I would have posted the icon but it comes with an un-announced advertising link. The other thing that comes to mind is whether that means the Gullibility readership are Genii or Geniuses…but what the heck, being a Genius you’ll know anyway! (quoted from Gullibility blog)

Well, I got slightly on the self-critical defensive on reading this. I want to write clearly. I think I change my wordy blogdrivel into plain English, on the second pass, but I have to admit that a fair amount of the blog evidence contradicts the success of this venture.

But, I can take it. I’ll run the blog through the reading age thing and learn from it.

Junior High level?

Well that sounds good in terms of the readability objective, but this puts me slightly on a new para about maybe having very banal content.

(Not a hundred per cent sure what this means really, which is a bit of an obstacle. How old are students in Junior High? In any case, hang your dumb heads in shame, readers.)

So, how is it that Gullibility blog can only be read by geniuses? I scan this very interesting site, looking for posts from Schroedinger or, at least, casually inserted calculus problems that are way beyond my puny mortal understanding. No, can’t see any.

Oh, wait. I see a thoughtful post on the Popper/Kuhn debate. Mention of “paradigms”. A link to a Princeton page of sociology fun? (Admittedly, you really do need to know a fair bit about academic sociology to find any of the Princeton jokes funny or even to understand the references. But I like the concept of sociological humour, in principle.)

w00t \0/. It’s official. It comes from the Internet, which is not allowed to lie.

Sociology=genius.

I can’t argue with that. In your faces, other scientists.

(Bah. This may make me seem a mite Gullible….)

7 worst blog scraper tricks

Hah, I lied. I was using one of the top x ways to get people to look at a post.

(There must be lots of people who think – “Ah, 5 secrets of reaching new customers? That’s an interesting number. Not too many for my poor little brain to take in. But big enough to have some meaningful content. And, secrets? Oooh, I love secrets! I love them so much that I will suspend the inner voice that is screaming out that, by definition, it can’t be a SECRET if it’s on the Internet.” Well, SEO experts seem to assume there are lots of these people. :-D)

In fact, there’s only one evil trick that I’m going to bitch about here.

Blog comment spam goes with the blog commenting territory. Akismet is pretty good at stopping most of it, at a cost of losing a few real comments. Otherwise, if we are too stupid to see the difference between a real person and an advert for some spurious Internet products embedded with links to online pharmaceutical sales, we don’t deserve to stop them. Maybe its some sort of Turing test game spammers are playing, examining our capacity to tell whether we are interacting with a human or machine .

Standard comment spam now half-heartedly tries to convince you it’s from a human by saying things like “I loved reading about Whydontyoublog though I can’t say I understand all of it” (I stupidly deleted a good few of these, just before I decided to write this, so no direct quotes. My bad.) Obviously, if you hadn’t seen the same words in a few dozen spams, and if the “insert blog name here” bit made sense – unlike in our examples – you might let this through.

Other ones are from scrapers. I really don’t care if scrapers take our text and present it in sometimes comically inappropriate situations.

The ones for “jokes” scrapers used to be entertaining in themselves. The blog would have a righteous rant about something and say something like “They must be joking” talking about Uncommon Descent or some such unfunny creationist nonsense. A Jokes scraper would spot the “joking” keyword and put the post on its Jokes sites. If there was anyone reading them who expected a punchline to these posts, they must still be waiting.

Indeed, we would sometimes deliberately used the J word just to see how unfunny an atheist rant had to be to avoid getting scraped. We never found a limit. The jokes scrapers just seem to have withered away.

However, these scrapers couldn’t do us any discernible harm. A few sites with no real content seemed just a waste of somebody else’s Internet bandwidth.

But their next-gen offspring really annoy me. These do the same thing but with a subtle difference. They attribute the post they’ve taken and stuck on their blog to somebody else. These sites say things like “romanianbride wrote an interesting post today” and follow it with a post from my/your blog.

You blink in disbelief a few times. You think “Wow, what an amazing coincidence, romanianbride also had an argument about atheism with her son Xavier’s teacher today and met her fundy neighbour Mr Roberts in the supermarket and had to have her cat CuddlySnowballIII dewormed. And she’s written about it in the exact same words as I did!” (Well, assuming that’s your blog content…)

I started out thinking this doesn’t matter, given that it’s not as if we want our noms de blog used anyway and that it’s unlikely that anyone would visit these scrapers except by mistake.

But it does matter a bit. It matters in terms of Google rank for a start. One of the things search engine spiders look for is “uniqueness of content.” If your blog has the same content as half a dozen scrapers – at least some of which will be phishing traps and/or pathways to online sales of probably fake pharmaceuticals, casinos or pr0n – how are the search engine spiders and spam detecting algorithms supposed to know that your site is legit? Your blog starts to look like just another scraper site. In fact, it doesn’t matter if Akismet bins the spam that announces this to you. It’s already damaged your reputation. Giving them the spurious “authority” of a link from your comments, if you use “follow”, is not going to hurt you any more.

Looking for some subtle way to strike back, I first thought of posting the IPs of every one of them here. Bah, way too naive a solution. I followed up some of these IPs using a map lookup IP program. They were pretty clearly spoofed or wireless drive-by linkages. Unless, that is, there really are people, universities and companies so dumb that they steal and misattribute other people’s content, but still operate their legitimate blogs and websites from those addresses. Not likely is it? So, I won’t post the IPs of these people, who are most likely to be victims themselves.

That being my first thought, I don’t have a second. I will try to find a suitable response though, in my quarter-skilled way and post it here if I ever come up with any reasonable suggestions.
If anyone else knows a solution, please let us know.

Mainly for Mana at Skepticum

Look what Google ads has added to a post with the title Praying for rain and wet t-shirts on Mana’s blog…..
Screen shot of google ad

Maybe your prayers have been answered, Mana/Black Sun/Billy and any other commenters who preferred the idea of an equally effective Dionysian alternative to the standard dull prayers for rain being offered by the governor.

I would have sent this as a comment but I can’t see any image getting past any working comments filter. I’ve cut out a bit of text and the post and left it at actual size so it stays legible.

Food fight between Europe and USA

It seems the World Trade Organisation is drawing back a bit from using its financial muscle against the EU over GM food**, according to an International Herald Tribune story.

.. the World Trade Organization said Thursday that the European Union would be given more time to end blockages on imports of engineered foods like corn.
“The period during which the EU was meant to have worked this out expired, and the parties decided to extend the deadline to Jan. 11,” said Keith Rockwell, a spokesman for the WTO.
The EU had been due to end the blockages by Nov. 21……
Argentina, Canada and the United States have sued the European Union at the WTO, which ruled last year that a de facto EU ban on imports of genetically modified foods between 1984 and 2004 was illegal.

This is quite a complicated, not to mention dull, story that I can’t really summarise without losing focus on the facts, but, basically, some EU countries and politicians object to having to open their markets to GM products on ecological grounds.

This has involved some heavy international pressure for “free trade” being brought to bear on the EU. From the BBC, in 2006, after the EU had even folded and allowed US sweetcorn in.

Two years ago the moratorium was lifted and a modified strain of sweet corn, grown mainly in the US, was allowed onto the market.
But Washington continued with the WTO case because it wanted to be sure approvals for GMO sales were being decided on scientific rather than political grounds.

Well, that sounds like a laudable aim, doesn’t it? Deciding issues on scientific rather than political grounds? Who could argue with that? Hmm. So the decision to push GM foods onto countries that really really don’t want them could not possibly be politically motivated then….. The wide antagonism to GM foods in Europe is “political” while the desire of big agribiz to sell seeds and crops is merely scientific.

In a reply to my comment on his blog, the Exterminator said:

heather, you said “In the UK, where atheism is more or less the default state “…
I don’t think you have any idea how envious that makes some of us feel.

Well, really, Exterminator, everyone in the UK, (nah in Europe, well, in the rest of the world really) is constantly jealous of America. You might have to face a fair bit more Christian lunacy but the lives of individual Americans are generally much better than ours. (Ignore the political leadership for a minute. I am talking about everyday living here)

The US has a widespread incomprehension of potential ecological crisis, a subject which occupies the minds of us Europeans a lot. (The conceptual average American, not anyone in particular.) While we in Europe are sorting through our garbage like starving raccoons* – washing out pickle jars and carefully separating soft cardboard from thick paper – you are living as if the world ‘s resources are infinite, maybe because you assume you have enough power to take what you need from the rest of the world when anything does run out.

Your cars are enormous by European standards. Even some of your ghettoes have detached houses with gardens. Your petrol is laughably cheap, even when you are facing a huge fuel price increase. FFS, you don’t even have to flush your own toilets. You have public restrooms where a sensor marks when you’ve lifted your butts off the pan and flushes the lavatory with more suction than the average vacuum cleaner. We’d all like to live like that.

The only problem is that your food is often shit. And I’m an English person speaking. The English have traditionally been associated with the worst food in Europe. Cheap food in the UK is usually rubbish. UK food makes even such European oddities like the Dutch willingness to put chocolate hundreds-and-thousands (sprinkles) on bread seem moderately tasteful. But, even we don’t have products like the clearly ironically named “cheese” in an aerosol can.

So, “protectionism” aside, Europeans generally don’t trust either your food or your commitment to the environment. Hence, we tend to pressurise our politicians to keep out GM food. My question here is whether Americans don’t also pressurise your politicians to make sure you can carry on driving huge vehicles, using infinite amounts of domestic power and finding magical “food” and household products available in supermarkets that feel as big as small European states?

Scientifically, it seems a mite doomed, unless the overwhelming majority of the world’s climate and ecosystem scientists are somehow mistaken. But, politically, maintaining the benefits of your way of life is a real imperative. So, how likely are we to see Washington pushing to make sure that any other major environmental issues are

being decided on scientific rather than political grounds?

*To quote the Simpsons – and, yes, even your best bloody television is infinitely classier than ours.
** How does anyone square the very existence of GM products with a creationist refusal to accept the evolutionary science behind genetics, by the way?

Data protection?

The BBC website has a rather shocking article today. The title is “UK’s families put on fraud alert” There is a brief lead-in, pretty well guaranteed to induce paranoia in anyone who might be on the Child Benefit database, warning them to check their bank accounts, on the authority of a government minister no less.

Two computer discs holding the personal details of all families in the UK with a child under 16 have gone missing.
The Child Benefit data on them includes name, address, date of birth, National Insurance number and, where relevant, bank details of 25m people. (from the BBC article)

Blimey. 25 million people’s personal details fit on two disks? And these disks holding very personal information were getting sent to the National Audit Office? Slight aside while I wonder why? More of this vaunted “joined up government” in action? I assume that bit in the Data Protection Act about information only being used for the purpose for which it’s gathered is just too quaint for today’s new information society?

Doesn’t this infinitely foreseeable event call into question the whole ID card madness yet again? How long before the records held by the multi billion health service computer, the passport office, the criminal records bureau, the tax office, the humongous national DNA register or the vehicles and licence authority also go AWOL? How much easier will it be for everyone’s personal information on the vaunted unified national identity database to disappear at one fell swoop?

(Note to self. Stop posting questions.)

Safe as milk?

First T_W, now me. We are becoming Simon Jenkins groupies. Oh blast. But he had a pretty good rant about the pervasiveness of surveillance and the growing spread of government intrusion into private life, in the Times Online today.

The really odd, semi-coherent nutters were out in force though. One comment that is daft enough to repeat said.

We seem to be ruled by the health and safety commission and supernanny combined

I can see that creeping centralisation of data combined with more surveillance and laws to stop us drinking and smoking and so on get tangled together in people’s minds. But the “health and safety” stuff that people tend to tie into this is a different matter altogether.

As far as I know, the Health and Safety Commission has no responsibilities beyond trying to cut down the numbers of people killed or seriously injured at work, and even these responsibilities only apply to specific kinds of work. If you get electrocuted in your office or you are sold bread with glass in it – it has nothing to do with them. They have nothing whatsoever to do with advising the population of Harrogate how much they should drink.

(Apparently, in Harrogate, “26.4% of you had between 12 and 17 “large” glasses of wine” last week, according to Simon Jenkins)

The current hysteria about health and safety has nothing to do with new laws or more intensive health and safety law enforcement – which is becoming close to non-existent. It is the result of the current response to any injury, which is to bang in a “No-win, no-fee” compensation claim.

(I speak as someone who heard the name of the Health and Safety Commission taken in vain yet again by my gym, when the staff threw me out – again – for not bringing an approved form of training shoes, last week This was despite – OK, then, maybe because of – my sarcastically pointing out that I didn’t know that it was possible to get steel-toe-capped trainers …. Oh alright then, maybe it was the (I thought mild, almost sub-vocal) cussing that got to them….

But it’s so much easier to blame imaginary health and safety inspectors, who might take it into their heads to visit my gym, bizarrely exceeding their legal remit, and then decide to enforce the wearing of cloth training shoes over open-toed hiking sandals.

No really, this is going somewhere, I think…. Our “safety” has indeed become an excuse for any number of ludicrous minor annoyances, like getting Marmite confiscated on a plane, as well as major intrusions on civil liberty. Actually examining the detail of whether any of these things really make us “safer” is, to put it mildly, long overdue.
