My house is getting brought into the 21st century. (I’m typing this on the floor, with a mouse mat and keyboard wobbling on top of the PC box, surrounded by binbags full of mouldy books, dishes and raw food detritus) This has wreaked havoc with my capacity to even switch on my PC, let alone comment meaningfully on the Virgin Media service, but I’m going to do it anyway.
It may be that the random moving of cables and the cable modem are to blame. So, I’m still not confident enough that I can justifiably phone up and berate the relentlessly chirpy Virgin Customer Service operatives.
All the same, I’m going to badmouth the service here. 10 Mbit seems to being interpreted as 10 Mbit amonth, as far as I can see. The connection keeps randomly going off. This is so irritating because it makes everything I try to do on the Internet – like post to this blog – depressingly unpredictable. I am reconnecting to Microsofdt messenger at least two or three times an evening, and whole days have passed without me being able to connect at all. Grr.
If anyone else has had a similar experience, I’ll suspect it’s not just me. So please can I have some comments? Also, if every other ex-Telewest customer has perfect service, I’d like to know so I can sort it out here rather than embarrass myself complaining about faults that turn out to be mine. (Tech support in work would probably say there was no surprise there)
Hi Heather I’m an ex-telewest (current Virgin) customer and I can’t fault their service. Their broadband hardly ever drops, speeds are great and I’ve not had one issue. I think it’s fair to say they’re the best provider I’ve ever had.
Saying that, I am going to be trying out a new service from a company called BeThere.co.uk. They offer 24 meg BB at ΓΒ£24 pm.
I’ll be running both Virgin Internet and BeThere concurrently for a while just to make sure I’m happy with it. It’s also only a 3 month contract so I thought it was worth a go.
I’m moving my TV back to Sky from Telewest (oops Virgin) and my phone to SKYPE, how’s that for moving with the times :). It makes sense for me to also look at another internet provider whilst I’m at it.
It seems strange you are having problems, the modem is pretty good and even those with speed issues still get 4-8 Meg speeds.
Give customer service a call, they’ve always been good when i’ve needed them. (You might even be able to wangle a nice discount, they’re throwing discounts out left right and centre because so many customers are leaving them).
There’s a good forum here for advice too: cableforum.co.uk/board/
Drop me an email if you have any questions.
I think you have a very different experience of their service π
Currently it seems there is a big outage in Heather’s area – although this is not on the Service Status pages of the Virgin Media website – and the telephone support appears non-existent at the weekend.
To be honest, I wouldn’t touch Virginmedia with a broadband barge pole. (YMMV)
π Maybe I’m just lucky. I’ve not had one outage in two years. I’m actually toying with the idea of staying with them. I’ll wait and see what discount they’ll offer me π
Maybe you are lucky (or the FSM is on your side :-))
There is a bit of an update – http://www.whydontyou.org.uk/blog/2007/03/18/virgin-service-woes-contd/#comment-4441
