(Lt William Calley) was convicted on 22 counts of murder for the 1968 massacre of 500 men, women and children in Vietnam. … He was sentenced to life in prison for his role in the killings in 1971. Then-US President Richard Nixon commuted his sentence to three years’ house arrest.
So Calley is responsible for the deaths of 500 people, gets life but this is commutted to 3 years house arrest. al-Megrahi kills less people, gets proper jail time and causes outrage.
Interesting double standard.
]]>At those points, some relatives of victims were unconvinced about Megrahi’s guilt. The issues that led to the Scottish court’s granting him leave to appeal will now never be addressed, as he seems to have traded his right to continue his appeal, in exchange for the opportunity to die outside jail.
I also find the manufactured furore disturbing and fail to see how the USA can think it’s within their sphere of influence to interfere in the Scottish justice system.
