I know that she really did have the surgery, because they had to stay in the US for 3 months for continual checkups. My mother offered to let them stay at her house for the whole three months. I have no idea of the insurance details from here and there, but the hospital really did give them a huge discount for paying within 30 days. Again, my mother helped out there and has since been repaid.
It does read like a scam, but it seems like it was on the up and up as we were knee deep in hosting them while they were here.
]]>At the current exchange rates $50k would buy all manner of private health care – certainly a lot more than the $19k the whole deal will actually cost them over here.
It is comical that this whole thing is about generating some fear (“wait till we get that over here”), implying they are in urgent need of “US” medical care and then creating a sense of urgency so that people respond before they have had time to think about it.
It has scam written all over it in capital letters.
