I attended a private Christian school in the US, and I found the rules oppressive, even though the quality of education was very good. The strangest part for me is how everything had to have a biblical tie-in, even things that don't necessarily need one. It was 8 hours of Jesus-time. In fact, it was so pervasive, it lost effectiveness rather quickly as I sometimes wished (even as a "true believer") it would just go away.

Andrew
I thought that's what I was saying.

I meant that the old system was dismantled because it was clearly unfair. But at least it didn't involve parents forcing their kids to follow religions they don't believe in.

Is there any evidence grammar schools work? Sure, the school full of smart kids outperforms the school full of dullards, of course it does, but does that benefit the smart kids? Last I heard it seemed not to.

To build new schools and expect them to pretend they have been going since the middle ages - in the belief they’ll bring the benefits of Eton - is so ersatz. The whole enterprise seems to be built on misleading kids. Trick them into thinking they are attending Eton in the 1930s and they will behave themselves.

Ah, cargo cult education policy.

Faith schools are mind-boggling crazy an idea. Why in the name of Toutatis cant we bring back good old grammar schools...

That said, I wonder if I can get funding for my school dedicated to Zeus....
