OK. I meant "somatising". I should have been clearer. I meant people feel bad and express it through their bodies. (I shudder at the word somatising. I couldn't bring myself to use it, just prejudice.)

What I was trying to imply was that people who need attention are better off getting it in real life than paying someone to agree with them and then "take away" the symptoms. This doesn't even acknowledge, let alone address whatever is wrong.

Why on earth treat illnesses with unproven treatments?

My problem with this is it involves self-deception and the deception of another person. And costs the health service money.

<blockquote cite="There is no need to remove any clothing as Reiki will pass through anything, even plaster casts.">
Damn. And it was that whole removal-of-clothing thing that gets me to go to the doctor in the first place. She's so nice. :)</blockquote>

"People who feel they need more attention and who express this feeling through medical symptoms will usually feel better after getting some attention." Do you really mean "medical" symptoms? Don't you mean physical or bodily or . . . symptoms? Or, medically recognized symptoms? Or . . .

Are you referring to malingering (the faking or exaggeration of symptoms), Münchhausen Syndrome (habitually presentation at a hospital with false symptoms of an acute illness), or a kind of somatization, the conversion of a mental state into bodily symptoms? Or, are you referring to a personality disorder consisting of low levels of self-esteem and self-confidence?

I think we all need attention more often than we realize (hell why am I writing this and why are you blogging?) which one of us converts it into symptoms?

Thanks for the post
